brady is such a genuinely interested host. it's so refreshing to listen to an interview where the interviewer asks actual interesting questions based off of what the interviewee was saying. he sounds so excited and interested in each and every thing she said and even when she dismissed something as stupid or uninteresting he still was so invested

  • @KipIngram

I absolutely concur that people should understand how their tools work. I think this applies to relatively mundane things like using software libraries when you're writing an application. You shouldn't just go grab a Python package and blindly use it - you really should understand what that package is DOING - how its algorithm works and so on. For that matter, if your whole career is programming computers, you really should understand how computer HARDWARE works too. That can MATTER - for example, if you don't understand how your processor's cache memory works, you can't necessarily write the highest performance software - there are a million and one ways to shoot yourself in the foot. You shouldn't do heavy floating point calculations without understand the technical details of floating point (see the well known paper by Goldberg, "What Every Computer Scientist Should Know About Floating Point"). A "not my problem" attitude toward these things is just poor professionalism. Plus, all this stuff is INTERESTING.

12:20 I have a fried whos sister in law was teaching arabic in Helsinki University. Tells a story that the three of them were walking in the city some sunny day and two arabic guys were walking behind them. Suddely the sister in law stopped, turned around and started an arabic tirade. Told that he's never seen so red faces as these two guys who changed on the other side of the street and walked away. They were just complementing the buttocks of the ladies in front of them.
I with my college were in Toronto sitting in cafe for a nice day when we heard two eldery ladies talking in swedish about all of their ailments. When they left and I said "Tack och adjö." The ladies changed color on their face and almost run away.
I've also commented to a Nokia engineer in a airport lounge that it is not wise to talk trade secrets in finnish over the phone in international flight lounge. There might be someone who undestands.

She does herself a disservice when she talks about The Mathematics of Love; I really enjoyed it. I got it as an audio book on the back of her video about choosing toilets, so had her reading it. Perhaps it isn't the Poincare Conjecture or anything heavy going like that, but it got clever, interesting concepts and applied them in a way that someone without a maths degree would understand, as well as being entertaining by it being a little bit silly. I frequently bring up in conversation stuff I learned from it.
