  • I go out to the sea and try camping with no sleeping bag on a freezing island in the magical winter wonderland. I overnighted in a snow shelter.

I was an avid hiker, camper, and outsdoor man in my youth. I'm now a senior citizen with a bad hip, so sadly these things are no longer possible for me. So now I live my outdoor adventures vicariously through your videos. I've watched other bushcraft videos as well, but yours are far and above the best of them all. So thank you young man, your videos gives this old man much joy and comfort.

Tom, we're in the same "canoe", unfortunately. Yep, bum hips really are a game changer. Like the video, my sons and I have spent the night in a few snow caves. Kudos to this young man for sharing his skills with this video! The hardest part of aging for me (besides the shock of how fast my life has gone by) is figuring out what you must accept letting go of and what you can still handle. Problem is, your body ages, but your mind does not. Keep raging against "the dying of the light", Tom! Cheers!

It seems there are a lot of city folks and people who haven't actually tried to do what he's doing in this video who watch this particular channel. As a result many are enamored bye his ability to craft this half circle igloo with debris cover.
But for anyone who's really skilled in Bushcraft particularly winter survival and in this case I will only speak for myself I find that shelter to be holy and completely inefficient. My native American ancestors use teepees for a reason, because they are the most heat-efficient of most shelters. He could have started out with three long tripod poles and filled them in with other poles and then used all of the fur trees that he had around him to build himself a more enclosed shelter with his fire right in the middle and he might have gotten more than 5 to 10 minutes sleep at a time.
But instead I can promise everybody watching this video he had the most miserable night of his life and got literally no sleep and the experience that you just watched was done for no other reason but to gain views. Could you stay alive that way? Sure but you couldn't do that for more than two or three nights tops before you start suffering from sleep deprivation and exhaustion and then you're going to eventually freeze to death.
I've never understood the brains behind a lean-to or half open structure and negative temperatures. You have all the heat from your fire escaping out the other half of your world up into the yonder heavens and you are only warm in that situation on the side that's facing the fire and I can promise you your back is freezing.
If you are ever in a life and death survival situation where you think you're going to be stranded somewhere for two or three days you best spend the 3 hours building yourself a darn good wiki up or TP.
The other thing I was very surprised that he didn't do which I thought he was going to do when he was getting rocks from the water cuz I thought he was going to build a separate fire on top of those rocks and heat those rocks up piping hot and then put that fire out and bring those rocks into his sleeping area so that he could sleep up against them underneath some branches and use those for body heat but he didn't do that. Yes he was smart to build a fire on the Rock so the ground doesn't continue to put it out and steal its heat but in a situation like that you always want to heat rocks up and keep them up against your body at night for extra warmth underneath a certain layer of Ash and branches.
I've had plenty of these nights and they're miserable and very inefficient. Build yourself a teepee in this situation and put your fire rights smack in the middle of the teepee the same way native Americans did. Because this method with this ridiculous half igloo lean too is a complete waste of time respectfully in my opinion.

I wondered if you could have used your paddle as a shovel....(keep your hands out of the snow too - and also give you a bit of reach)
Also, for your window - if you'd made it the same size as the cover you used to dig snow you could have sealed it quickly and easily with that.
I think, befoe swimming, I might have made myself a mini sauna to get my body temperature right up.

Was that fresh water or salt water you were kayaking on? That was quite a shelter you built. Looked cozy and warm, considering the conditions. Glad you were able to stay warm and get some sleep. Your enthusiasm for your adventures is very obvious. I like the sounds of nature and that beautiful night sky. Not sure about the baths in that frigid id water though. A friend of mine and I built wood and canvas kayaks back in the 60s and did a lot of kayaking and camping on the sandbars on the Wisconsin River. Very basic. Loved the video.
