    • @That80sGuy1972
      @That80sGuy1972 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nope. Paladins are immune to normal diseases, that disease is not a plague of sorts but a sickness from being in that plane... kind of like living in a radiation zone. It's a different level of disease resistance... and the biggest fix is to just not be there.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is not, but in the case of fluid and particulate buildup in the lungs like this, its not technically a disease the paladin would be immune to, no more than they can just call smoke inhalation or poison gas "lung disease" and declare no damage or effect.

    on a side note I don't understand the reluctance to nerf. It makes sense that under certain conditions a character will be nerfed. The "silence of Lolth"? the time of troubles? spell plague? these are all cannon events where character classes would be naturally nerfed. It makes sense that a paladin of Pelor is going to lose power in the Abyss. Or that a rangers ability to track will be nerfed in the shadowfell.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Spell casters are particularly averse to nerfage, because they feel like they are going to get shredded... personally, I'm just not the "optimum build" type of player, take something away, I will compensate by using this outrageously over informed brain meat to adapt and overcome, I find a clever win very, very satisfying.

    **about to close all browser things and start gaming before getting blackout drunk and passing out**
    **AJ releases a video**
    **Plans derail with a smile**
    Thanks for clarifying the Ethereal oddities that I thought changed. From you making a point to do it, I assume lots of others got that same misinterpretation. Thanks for covering the Neth. Also, the Planescape Rogue Neth, a great optional player character race, is quite fun. Those Border Ethereal spiders are probably one of my favorite horror-type monsters to use as a DM of that plane. Your last video covering them was a perfect example of that... and I'm not talkin' about phase spiders, they are bland in comparison. One of my favorite things to do for some campaigns is to create a demi-plane for it that is cut off from outer-planar things, like gods among other things, and inner-planar travel is boxed within the demiplane's specific rules and its own elemental planes. I do have priest types but they get their faith magic from forces, philosophies, and their own faith power... not at all any outer-plane thing. Oh... and the whole thing about what causes a lot of evil are not just the undead but the souls locked into that reality, they cannot escape and can either reincarnate or become undead. The rest are just shoved in a form of purgatory of sorts for the undecided. For each one, I do have a fun big bad enemy that created that reality for epic reasons if the party reaches that level.
    Also, the pseudo matter thing, people descending from illusions becoming real in the Ethereal. That's my origin story of my homebrew "body discorpment" process, inspired by the original Nintendo Entertainment System's Final Fantasy's Black Mages... also "shadow stuff", the monsters known as "Shades", the explanations of how illusions are shadow stuff and are pseudo matter that exists within the prime material plane while phantasms are actually illusions (things only the target sees) that are not at all physical. My only player who was crazy enough to take the highest level of Body Discorpment had the benefits of all magic he does is cast as if he's 10 levels higher, is 100% more effective in all ways (because those boosts are totally real reality-adding boosts by that point and illusions are next-level), his body weight is 1/10 of what it should be so that adds to his potential carried/max press potential, he needs only 1/10 of what he needs to live (breath, eat, drink, heat, etc), is 100% immune to toxins/diseases, and some other minor things I cannot think of right now. Sound awesome, right? Nope. The costs: All damage he takes is at 10x normal because most of his mass is pretty much illusion and once his real parts are damaged, the illusions based upon it unravel into Ethereal mist. It's not excessive, he went to level 10. It wasn't a mere 100% increase in each level too or else level 10 would have been 11x. Also, once you die, recovering you (at that level) can only be done by Reincarnation, Resurrection, or Clone... because Raise Dead does not have enough of you leftover. You are 10% of your mass, a mostly void gel in your form collapsing into going once you swoon from damage. Also, going to "death's door", you lose 10x your HP per round because you are f^cking disintegrating for the most part. Cosmetically, you look like a Shade monster unless you use your magics regularly to tweak your colors (which he did). I digress, he did love the Faustian deal that nobody else would touch EVER. I created that solely because he really wanted to Black Mage his character and explained it via Manual of the Planes, Shades, and Planescape (the early 90s). I accommodated him and made it far more cost than worth but he still LOVED it. It was role-playing gold, so there is that.
    Can you answer why so many DMs ignore the border ethereal thing when monsters can attack them there, like a Medusa's gaze or monsters who exist on that plane too, when player characters use going ethereal as an escape? I mean, if a Medusa is looking at your magical ghost-form self, she will turn you to stone. You'll just stop being Ethereal and exist in both planes as their stone manifestations.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Simply put, I blame the game designers who have WOEFULLY ignored and downplayed the Ethereal plane in favor of the Astral plane, when clearly, the Ethereal plane is far, far better as an adventuring environment.

    This is my interpretation on FR cosmology, and by extention, its multiverse.
    Prime Material Plane is a sea of a strange substance acting both like gas and fluid called phlogiston. Within this substance there exist an infinity of crystal spheres containing worlds - each usualy a solar system.
    Each world is surrounded by Border Ethereal plane, and within it, it has its own echo. Deeper into this plane exists the proper Ethereal plane called Deep Ethereal. Ethereal plane is filled with a mist of proto-matter, thought to be a much denser form of phlogiston, despite acting more like a gas. Within Deep, near the Border, exist Inner Planes, containing different elemental essenses that the ethereal mist consolidated into. Each Inner Plane is infinite and filled with elemental essense. Each of them conceptualy borders each of the other Inner Planes, crystal sphere in the Material Plane, and both Deep and Border Ethereal. Each crystal sphere can have a different Inner Plane structure, but usualy it has the common structure that the Realmspace has. At the edge between Deep Ethereal and Inner planes exists the Elemental Chaos where all of the energies mix and flow chaoticly, this plane is also the plane of Limbo.
    Realmspace has six major elemental planes, Fire, Earth, Water, Air, Positive and Negative energy. Within conceptual boders between those planes are pockets of para and quasi elemental planes where two elements mix. Within those planes there is only one zone that borders all the others and it results in a perfect mix of those substances - the crystal sphere on the Material Plane, and its two twins, Feywild with a bit more Positive energy, and Plane of Shadows, or Shadowfell, with a bit more Negative energy. With the exeption of this space, within Elemental Planes there can be only spaces that border only exactly one other Elemental Plane. Para elemental planes are between purely elemental planes, and quasi are between elemental planes and energy planes. In Realmspace, the para planes between Fire and Water and Earth and Air didnt exist. There didnt exist a plane between Positive and Negative energy.
    Each world is also touched by Astral plane, a realm of thoughts that is also connected with Outer planes. Outer planes are common for all worlds, but their contents can differ, in one Mystra might be dead, in other she might be alive, and in others, other gods may take her place. There are 17 Outer planes, each corresponding to the divine alignment, Good and Evil, Law, Chaos and Neutrality.
    Outlands is a realms of Neutrality and connects to every other Outer plane, each other realm was connected to the two other realms bordering it on a Great metaphysical wheel in this order: Mechanus representing Order, then the realms representing Good, Arcadia, Celestia, Bytopia, Elysium, Beastlands, Arborea and Ysgard, then Limbo representing Chaos, then the reamls representing Evil, Pandemonium, Abyss, Tarterus, Hades, Ghenna, Baator and Archron. Each of those realms was more spiritual than physical.
    Weave is a metaphysical, semisentient construct spanning each and every one of those spaces, allowing for the flow of proto-matter or thought energies to flow between worlds. Those energies are known as magic. Sentient beings, like gods, primordials and mortals can use the weave to shape those energies into desired shapes, this allowing for spellcraft. But one can call upon each type of energy directly, without the help of the weave, allowing for finer control over those powers, but also locking out some of the more complicated uses, with other complex functions possible or easier. This ability is centered in each soul, and its mastery is called Psionics, tho very few can discover, let alone master it.
    This is the multiverse in which Realmspace exists, there are also other multiverses, each may be just a little different to the point that they are indistinguishable, or they may be vastly different. There are points in some worlds or their planes where two different realities meet. For Realmspace, on the edge of Feywild, there exists a border towards a very different reality filled with creatures alien to even the physical laws governing this reality. Those creatures already conquered their reality and are eager to colonize Realmspace and then all of the other world sharing its multiverse. Guarding against that is a powerful field of time distortion and the Cerulean Order that is channeling the energy asociated with the Prime Material plane.

    They are not dead but rescued by a good god and is sent to find artifacts throughout existence to defeat the big bad guy and restore the material plane.

    1.) So, when a part of a plane is consumed by the abyss, it detaches and falls into the outer plane abyss? Like some natural quarantine of the infected parts?
    2.) Do you have any examples of such power sources (the ones needing warlocks)? And does the warlock need the patron in those cases, or can they discover that the deal is a bit one sided?
    3.) Think a warlock can be a human/demihuman phylactery for something?
    4.) I don't remember what it is, but I believe there are spell keys to get past normal planar restrictions, though these are neither easy to find, nor common knowledge.
    5.) I know that, in spelljammer, there are cleric spells meant to open portals to realms where their god is present. This is necessary for them to regains spells since they can't get it in spheres where their god isn't worshiped unless their god agrees to worship all of the gods of a plane. Can that solution be used for different planes?
    6.) Can you cover some of the natural ethereal phenomenon, like ether cyclones, that sort of ether wave thing, or the things that are basically large black holes? I'm especially curious where that goes.
    7.) Can you enter or leave the ethereal plane without spells, Sigil portals, or spell like abilities? Things like the ethereal vortexes connecting the prime and elemental planes, or the color pools in the Astral?
    8.) Can you smash the ethereal duplicates if you really want to hide what was there, or would you just pass through it?
    9.) Would make an illusion of the actual thing overlaid on a duplicate be more likely to make it real?
    10.) Would you say that things created on the ethereal plane, like creation, fabricate, and wall of stone (things that create something out of seemingly nothing) are permanent? What about creating something with the wish spell? Does it not have the normal penalties (though maybe the illusion quirks)?
    11.) Can you enter the dream plane, from either the astral or ethereal sides? What about things exiting?
    12.) Are there other psycopomphs in existence than those 4? Would it be acurate to compare them to angels (as opposed to gods/deities/primordials, demonlords/Archdevils/Archfey/Archomentals, or archons/demons/devils)?
    13.) Could those ancient species have destroyed the mindflayer empire, or had a hand in the fall of the aboliths (not just the gods)?
    14.) Do those ancient species fall into any of the more familiar categories like celestial, fiend, elemental, dragon, etc?
    15.) Do memes reproduce?

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1.) Seems pretty weird right? Tharizun throws the shard into the elemental planes and yet the abyss is in the outer planes? How does it work? I don't know, it seems wrong.
      2.) Not examples from lore, no. I can throw theoretical sources at you all day... for example, a word of creation spoken constantly for all time that can only resonate with mortal beings.
      3.) Oh, never say never.
      4.) OK
      5.) yes
      6.) Certainly, the next vid will cover those events and also some known demiplanes.
      7.) Yes, teleport without error and Gate spells work just fine.
      8.) You can tear them apart, yes.
      9.) I have seen no evidence of that, but its worth a shot. Like I said, there may be spells that can manipulate this effect which are not yet known in the game.
      10.) Wish would be a different situation, as for the duplicates, they can potentially exist for a very long time, but if the object in the Material plane is gone, the framework for the duplicate is gone and decay begins. Magic can provide an artificial framework, and magic can be made permanent.
      11.) Yes, Teleport without error, gate, planeshift, the dream realm is a location, like the astral you can enter either as a dream spirit, or a physical being (converted into dream stuff).
      12.) Psychopomps exist in mythology and in the Pathfinder RPG setting, you can exchange them for a special type of Angel ranked between a planetar and a solar.
      13.) Perhaps.
      14.) Elder Being, technically they are Aberrations.
      15.) Unknown.

      @@AJPickett Illusion has a different meaning in AD&D, illusions are semi-real shadow stuff creations while phantasms are things existing only in the target's perceptions. Some "phantasmal" spells are actually illusions by that standard. So, once something manifests, if it's in the Ethereal, it's still an illusion, just a pseudo-matter real thing on that plane of proto-matter. It's also the basis of demiplanes created there having real things exist because everything manifested crossed the barrier, only at that point, from being illusion to reality. Could this be described as a "crystal sphere" the gods coalesced out of ectoplasm (as you described) then sank even deeper into the Ethereal, hoping it never rises to the top?
    And small bonus question: Any sources on what else is down in the Deep Ethereal that would be less than peachy-keen if it ever floated closer to a more populated part of the Ethereal?

    Shedim are VERY different in D&D than the ones in Steve Jackson's In Nomine, as there they are Demons that must possess a host to manifest on Earth & look like shifting clouds of body parts out of a nightmare. In D&D they'd mostly be Chaotic Evil, but Lawful & Neutral might be different flavors of Evil they manifest as. The Prince of Factions is one of the most powerful, basically any group that attacks others, basically the bad "-isim"s of the world.
    Shedim there are the fallen form of the Kyriotates who also need to posses hosts but can use multiple bodies at the same time, thus a flock of birds can be perfect spy network support for angels with a Kyriotate on the team. here's a general rule for life, and particularly literature and communication via text, always write the whole title out once before you start using an acronym or whatever to refer to it, particularly to a walking encyclopedia for which BOA could mean one of about six million different things. Specific rules can over-rule general rules in D&D, but all demiplanes are usually located on the Ethereal plane. Also, not knowing specifically what you are talking about.. if it is a very modern game lore thing, it may be that the author of it literally doesn't know what the ethereal plane is for and assumes the astral plane does everything the ethereal plane is supposed to do.

WotC then says "Well people are free to play it how they like" and sweeps its issues with game design under the carpet.. despite the fact that IF THEY DON'T PROVIDE A BASIC LOGICALLY CONSISTENT FRAMEWORK FOR THE BASE EXAMPLE OF THE GAME UNIVERSE, HOW CAN ANY NEW PLAYERS ACTUALLY BRANCH OUT ON THEIR OWN WITH ANY SORT OF FUNDAMENTAL UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT THEY ARE MODIFYING IN THE FIRST PLACE?

    @vinx.9099 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    one big note i'd like to bring in is that paladins in 5th edition don't have a direct tie to a power, it's internal. paladins don't have a deity, they have an oath. an oath of the crown is no less secular then a wizard. sure, there are gods that deal with royalty and magic, but a wizard doesn't (directly) lend power from mystra to do magic, neither does the paladin.
    of course paladins make for great religious characters. very often an oath means they are the champions of an ideal. gods can be seen as personifications of ideals, or champions there of. it makes sense they'd work together, but they aren't tied to one another like clerics and their gods or warlocks and their patrons.
    so i'd say paladins suffer no penalties (other then maybe some specific spells that fizzle) while in the ethereal plane as long as they hold to their devotion to their oaths.

    Awesome video! I have a question about how this fits in with other lore, and maybe we're getting into other multiverses here, but... if the Abyss was created from Tharizdun plunging the shard of ultimate evil into the primordial chaos/soup and not placing it into the Astral Sea like the Obyriths wanted, how is it that the Abyss is accessed through the Astral rather then the ethereal? Seems like if the ethereal better describes the primordial soup of creation rather than anything in the Astral... unless Tharizdun actually did place the shard in the Astral exactly as the obyriths wanted him to. Could the Abyss somehow moved to the Astral? Or maybe the Abyss is just what Tharizdun imagined would have happened if he'd plunged the shard into the primordial soup, thus creating the Abyss simply by imagining it. 🤔

      @@robomonkey1018 After watching all these lore videos from several youtubers I've come to view the cosmology as an imperfect understanding of the cosmos. It IS an organizational abstraction, which is why the abyss can be placed in the outer planes without behaving as or having the history of the outer planes. We know it doesn't make sense. The wizards and scholars of our fictional worlds, and the gods and angel as well, know it doesn't make sense, but no one *accessible* has absolute knowledge and is willing to share it. I would compare this to physicists having a solid understanding of Newtonian physics but recognizing that Realistic situations will break those equations. Newton is outdated but provides a model for everyday situations. Then relativity and quantum theory provide the most up-to-date understanding, but we cannot reconcile them, so we know that ultimately those models fail to describe reality accurately as well. They are simply "good enough" for general understanding in most situations. This is how I view the cosmology of D&D and why alternate models being introduced in official material doesn't bother me. I figure some wizard cabal or druid circle had some differing opinions and that's fine.

    5:50 So...if the phlogiston is the flipside of the etherial mist... would that mean that if you are in the deep etherial and then try to get back into the material plane (like a phase spider or su/unccubus could) you would apear outside the crystal sphere? Or am i confusing something here...

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes, the border ethereal coexists with every part of the prime material plane, the deep ethereal is not 'further away' it is more like "no part of this mixes with anything else".

      some Spells and some psi creatures in the ethereal can go thru World Spheres except The Known World & Krynn Sphere I though. Might have just be my DM in the past.

    What is difference between Speljammer and Etherjammer. We have Etherjammers in Mage the Ascencion World of Darkness rpg. Sons of Ether tradition uses them as Speljammers when travelin in Deep Umbra or Horizon.

      I'm not familiar with Etherjammers sorry.

      Since the word 'Spelljammer' is a play on 'windjammer', a type of sailed ship, it basically means "runs on spells." Therefore, an Etherjammer runs on ether. I would assume.

      I'd view them as the same thing, if any the only difference would be connected to the ethereal plane somehow

    Out of curiosity are you thinking of continuing the history of the realms series maybe a certain ogre empire and a hammer?

    Ethergaunts were in the 3.X fiend folio, but not with a ton of detail. I don't know what (if anything) 4e did with them, but 5e hasn't touched them (yet)

    Wow, why insult Planespeak? One of the highlights that makes that setting so unique. It’s like saying you’ll ignore talking about dragons in Dragonlance, Psionics in Dark Sun, or the Mists in Ravenloft. 😑

      @AJPickett  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't insult it, I just expressed a personal preference, which I am perfectly fine with YOU doing... *Hard stare*. Back the fuck up buddy.

    so QQ for the community DM's "
    would you consider devine/clerical tomes or scrolls rarer/harder to obtain than arcane tomes n scrolls?"

    • @HighmageDerin
      @HighmageDerin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Other way around in my mind, reason being, Wizards are FAR more protective of their secrets and spells. hording and hiding their knowledge from other wizards who might steal it. Where as the Religious orders WANT people to know their gods. AND have a veritable army of priests monks clerics and acolytes that all are of the same mind. Just like the monks of Earth's History they spent their days copying various writings day in and day out. Add in magic and holy magic scrolls could literately be a dime a dozen!

    • @AJPickett

      In literature there is the example of Cadderly Bonaduce who reached a point of such devotion to the god Denier that suddenly he could see and understand that the common religious text was, in fact, like a powerful spellbook.

      @@AJPickett I have been out of touch with realms lore since WOtC Decided to murder my goddess. And the spell plague burnt away the magic of my enjoyment of that campaign setting. I've only recently returned to DnD in the last 2 years. didn't he get turned into an undead or something?
