I too am intrigued by the labor shortage. As I work with people in the mental health arena, I see the potential for the good in this situation in bringing about change on a grand scale. I think the pandemic has given people a chance to examine their lives and reassess their values, goals, quality of life and make changes. Perhaps people are recognizing that they need less stuff, can live in a different way, or the stress of working in customer service is not worth it anymore? Maybe I am being optimistic, but I do hope change will happen that will result better quality of life for all people..... It might just be a bit painful getting there.. In the meantime I love the sign I saw in a cafe this summer "The whole world is short staffed. Be kind to those that showed up."

When you are on social media you will always get people that "have" to be negative. They are looking for a response which "justifies their existance" in their mind. Also, if you respond then they are getting satisfied. Ignore and/or delete, they are not worth your time or energy. I didn't see the comments and I don't need to. I love watching you create such beautiful journals! I know from my own experience that the pandemic changed how we worked. My husband had to start working more at home and I got a job working from home as well. People whose employers laid them off or shut down altogether spent the initial months working on their homes and collecting unemployment, but they found other traditional jobs and others started their own business or sort of cobbled together an income from doing various types of work such as dog walking, building things to sell, etc. I’m sure some people out there found ways to turn their hobbies into income. After months of making things work, people reassessed and discovered they enjoyed their new jobs or being their own boss and could get by with less. I know we don’t eat out or go shopping nearly as much as we did before the pandemic. We also don’t travel nearly as much and haven’t had a real vacation in well over two years. All of those things cost a lot of money and, if you’re not doing those things, you don’t need to earn as much. So maybe people are getting by with less??? Also, in those places where they’ve stopping providing unemployment, they still have Help Wanted signs everywhere, so I feel like there’s more going on than just people relying on unemployment. It will be interesting to see how things develop.

They are buying up houses left and right so it seems to me they should have some bills to pay. So strange especially because we were only really shut down here for about 3 months. Ever since the everything has been pretty much opened with different restrictions as time has gone on so people really weren’t out of work for all that long here. So strange! Hugs, Amy💕

I was baffled by the labor force issue too & then heard someone on tv talking about it. Between people drawing unemployment & continuing to take advantage of that...people afraid to go to work...people refusing to get vaccinated if the employer requires it...and people that won't work where they WON'T require vaccines...it's a cumulative cause of low labor force. This journal will be so fun! 🌞❤

I love this! Gorgeous! About the labor shortage, one thing that never seems to get brought up is that we have lost over 750,000 people to covid. Many of them worked somewhere. And I think Covid sped up the retirement process for a lot of older folks who didn’t want to risk their lives going back to work. Like everything else, there are a lot of reasons for why things are the way they are now. The enhanced unemployment has ended in every state now, so it’s more than that.

I became a stay at home mom a year before COVID-19 because I have a child with disabilities. Most places didn't have the flexibility I need. I think there is quite a few mom's or dad's put in the same situation. Also there has been places that put the hiring signs up who are not hiring. I don't know if it's because businesses are saying they more staff just can't afford more or what.

Hi, I'm sure your 5 ring notebook journal will be very nice! I think maybe part of the deal with businesses needing help, is that people who lost jobs during the worst part of covid got government pay and it seems like some of the younger generation are maybe sort of lazy or feel entitled, so it's just easier to draw unemployment than to go out and get and job and work. Many places around where I live have "Now Hiring" signs out also.
So strange to me when you talked about the store opening…. Here in Sweden all stores ( not grossary) opens 10 and weekend the might open 11-3 pm or 10-2 pm
That paper is just stunning, as it always is with Blue Fern. People, including the mental health program I run, can’t get workers. Much of this was due to the extra unemployment they were giving out so people made more to stay on unemployment instead of working.

This paper is very elegant. Yeah, Jen! My 2 cents- many of the labor force found other work from home jobs out of necessity, found them to be better, in general, and now have no desire to return to their previous local jobs.
You are correct. COVID has changed society worldwide in so many ways and we need to accept it instead of bemoaning it. One of the best things to come of this is to realize what a corporatocracy we have become and change it. Let there no more be such a thing as the 'working poor'. Big corporations like Walmart and their ilk need to give workers full time hours and pay them a LIVING wage with full benefits so their employees don't need Medicare and food stamps. Stop sponging off the government Walmart!

Good morning Gayle!! Love this gorgeous Blue Fern paper. This binder is going to be so fun to watch from start to finish!! It's crazy to see the cargo ships anchored all the way up the Puget Sound from Seattle to the border. We are about a mile from the water and the same ship has been sitting out here for almost 2 months now!! We heard on the news last night that the National Guard is coming in to unload ships to ease the "back up". I just don't get it on why there's an employee shortage everywhere!! Thank you for the joy and positivity. It is much needed right now. The reason why there is no labor force we were told is because of inflation and the extreme cost of living increase. Most are working three to four part time jobs to take care of rent increases by 200% and food shortages, gas hikes and now Winter knocking on our doorstep. There are multiple issues right now. We are being forced to vacate and move to the outskirts of town because now rent for a studio has gotten as high as a 1,000+. Prices are skyrocketing everywhere and for everything 🥺😢🥺
Oh I could kick myself now. I saw a cookbook at an estate sale that was a three ring binder, but I have a box full of cookbooks from my mom and grandmother, so I didn't take it. It was a really pretty color too, but never thought to do something like this. I'm going to go through my box and see if I don't have a binder in there. Love this so far.

I have wondered about the labor force, too. I know that there is a lack of daycare for working mothers and working women have been the most impacted by the pandemic. Beyond that, I have no idea what is the reason. It seems that every business and store in Fort Myers has a help wanted sign by the front door. I have an issue with Blue Fern papers. Both sides are so beautiful that you don't want to sacrifice one side. I‘d like to see the back a simple coffee or tea-dyed image. This is so beautiful. I’m so ready to get going on Christmas! These papers are stunning! Here in Washington state, having chatted with a hostess in a higher end restaurant recently, she said her 2 roommates were out of work collecting unemployment to the tune of $2000+ a month. No incentive to go back to work making that kind of money staying home. Sad to say our governor has made it far too easy to not work just my opinion..
Unemployment insurance benefits are to compensate individuals who lose their jobs through no fault of their own. It is paid by a special tax on the employers who caused their workers to lose their jobs in the first place (well, pre-COVID). Technically, the money should be there unless the politicians have taken from that fund, too. We can't blame the out-of-work individuals because they are now making a certain amount of money to not work in an industry that may kill them.

My husband was a carpenter before retiring and hired his high school nephew to help..when said nephew used the 2 ticks in his measurement...my husband stopped and gave him a tape measure lesson...the 2 ticks is a family joke here! I measure the same way lol. I don't understand the lack of workers either. Every place we go , there are signs hiring too!

I bought a couple Better Homes ring binders on Ebay and am trying to decide what to do with them. One of them will be an homage to my Mom and my Mother-in-law. I will feature some of their favorite recipes. I want to include many photos. After Mom passed away I found a magazine page she cut out of a magazine. It was an advertisement for a kitchen with enameled white metal cabinets and red (looks like linoleum) counter tops. That was her dream kitchen and will also be featured in the binder. Regarding the labor shortages, parents cannot find childcare because of Covid-19 so at least 1 parent must stay home with their kids. It’s hard to feel your child is safe when they don’t yet qualify for a vaccine. Daycare and schools are germ factories so I can understand the hesitancy of parents. No job is worth your child’s life.

Yeah! I got a used 7 ring Day timer binder, just bought the Blue Fern cardstocks and bought a dollar tree book for my alter book. Whoa Christmas!!!
Blue Fern papers are the ones you have to buy two packets of so you can use the fronts and backs. They are so gorgeous!!!!!

People, including the mental health program I run, can’t get workers. Much of this was due to the extra unemployment they were giving out so people made more to stay on unemployment instead of working.
I agree, but that ended a couple months ago, and still there’s a shortage of folks to hire. I wonder how they are paying their bills? 🤷🏻♀️❤️

You are correct. COVID has changed society worldwide in so many ways and we need to accept it instead of bemoaning it. One of the best things to come of this is to realize what a corporatocracy we have become and change it. Let there no more be such a thing as the 'working poor'. Big corporations like Walmart and their ilk need to give workers full time hours and pay them a LIVING wage with full benefits so their employees don't need Medicare and food stamps. Stop sponging off the government Walmart!
Not only do I love paper craft but am a quilter also. I buy fabric and then hesitate to use it because it is pretty.

Good morning Gayle!! Love this gorgeous Blue Fern paper. This binder is going to be so fun to watch from start to finish!! It's crazy to see the cargo ships anchored all the way up the Puget Sound from Seattle to the border. We are about a mile from the water and the same ship has been sitting out here for almost 2 months now!! We heard on the news last night that the National Guard is coming in to unload ships to ease the "back up". I just don't get it on why there's an employee shortage everywhere!! Have an awesome day....💜

The reason why there is no labor force we were told is because of inflation and the extreme cost of living increase. Most are working three to four part time jobs to take care of rent increases by 200% and food shortages, gas hikes and now Winter knocking on our doorstep.
There are multiple issues right now. We are being forced to vacate and move to the outskirts of town because now rent for a studio has gotten as high as a 1,000+. Prices are skyrocketing everywhere and for everything 🥺😢🥺

Oh I could kick myself now. I saw a cookbook at an estate sale that was a three ring binder, but I have a box full of cookbooks from my mom and grandmother, so I didn't take it. It was a really pretty color too, but never thought to do something like this. I'm going to go through my box and see if I don't have a binder in there. Love this so far.

I have wondered about the labor force, too. I know that there is a lack of daycare for working mothers and working women have been the most impacted by the pandemic. Beyond that, I have no idea what is the reason. It seems that every business and store in Fort Myers has a help wanted sign by the front door.
I have an issue with Blue Fern papers. Both sides are so beautiful that you don't want to sacrifice one side. I‘d like to see the back a simple coffee or tea-dyed image.

Here in Washington state, having chatted with a hostess in a higher end restaurant recently, she said her 2 roommates were out of work collecting unemployment to the tune of $2000+ a month. No incentive to go back to work making that kind of money staying home. Sad to say our governor has made it far too easy to not work just my opinion..
Unemployment insurance benefits are to compensate individuals who lose their jobs through no fault of their own. It is paid by a special tax on the employers who caused their workers to lose their jobs in the first place (well, pre-COVID). Technically, the money should be there unless the politicians have taken from that fund, too. We can't blame the out-of-work individuals because they are now making a certain amount of money to not work in an industry that may kill them.

This is beautiful! I am getting some giggles from you measuring with 2 ticks... My husband was a carpenter before retiring and hired his high school nephew to help..when said nephew used the 2 ticks in his measurement...my husband stopped and gave him a tape measure lesson...the 2 ticks is a family joke here! I measure the same way lol. I don't understand the lack of workers either. Every place we go , there are signs hiring too!

I bought a couple Better Homes ring binders on Ebay and am trying to decide what to do with them. One of them will be an homage to my Mom and my Mother-in-law. I will feature some of their favorite recipes. I want to include many photos. After Mom passed away I found a magazine page she cut out of a magazine. It was an advertisement for a kitchen with enameled white metal cabinets and red (looks like linoleum) counter tops. That was her dream kitchen and will also be featured in the binder. Regarding the labor shortages, parents cannot find childcare because of Covid-19 so at least 1 parent must stay home with their kids. It’s hard to feel your child is safe when they don’t yet qualify for a vaccine. Daycare and schools are germ factories so I can understand the hesitancy of parents. No job is worth your child’s life.
This journal is starting out gorgeous! Your enthusiasm is contagious, and I can’t wait to start on my own journal with this collection.
