I was told a long time ago that "fasting is bad for you because your body stops burning fat when you don't eat." For the same reason, I was told that you should always eat a breakfast. Those same people were also telling me to eat plenty of processed carbs. I am happy to say that I finally started ignoring all of that advice. I don't eat anything until 1pm every day, and I feel great. I have also been avoiding sugar/carbs, and I've lost 35 pounds since January. I've been eating tons of steak and eggs, and I feel better than ever. Bottom line is that most people don't have any idea what they're talking about.
I can't even bring myself to eat breakfast, I just don't feel like eating at all first thing in the morning, with that said I do have a fat coffee in the morning with butter, I eat meal 1 at about 1pm and then dinner at 530pm and repeat, I am 54 years old and 5'9" and 180 lbs. Having already reached my determined body weight this is schedule that I run and feel great. I also follow a low carb diet just because I am used to it after 4 years and why go back to what started the problem in the first place. I was 250 lbs 4 years ago and had high blood pressure which is gone and iam off all meds for that.
@@matilda4406 i do drink water first thing in the morning, I don't eat fruit, too much sugar, I know people say its different but at the end of the day fructose is fructose. I know its not for everyone but I run low carb low sugar. I get those vitamins elsewhere.
Almost the same as my schedule I've been doing it forever. I don't drink coffee at all though and I only drink water until my lunch. I do find I'm going to pee constantly through the day but I drink so much water so it makes sense. I never considered the cortisol and I'm a very low stress person. The big difference though is I don't exercise much at all anymore. I'll try to sneak in some when I can but I've got a newborn at home. I hope to get back to exercise soon
@@matilda4406 ya your right, I do eat sour cherries sometimes, and I did neglect to mention that I do eat blueberries, raspberries, blackberrys usually with a full fat low sugar yogurt!
I have been doing IF for over 3 years and will continue to do it for the rest of my life. The most I have ever gone was 30 hours. Mostly I do 20. Thank you for all the info :)
@@Jus4kiks you need to be doing keto because if you are not on a healthy Ketogenic diet and and your body is use to only carbohydrates all the time doing intermittent fasting like I am doing you probably will end up dead. That's my tip right there plust during these five days I did light exercise. Today at 3 or 4 is my first meal which is just one lol until tomorrow same time.
I believe I just learned something I have been wondering about.. At 70 I am busy from the time my feet hit the floor till I drop. I do quite a bit of physical work. I can't fast. I cannot make it through the day.. I do skip breakfast. Just coffee.. I was insulin resistant two years ago. Lucky me I did a little research and discovered the whole low carb thing... Thanks to all these guys!!
All this stuff balances out for 98% of people after a few weeks. Billions of people fast for religious reasons for their entire lives. If you're already lean you obviously don't need to do extended fasting. But 1-4 days here and there is nothing and only beneficial. I think we all should do IF, whether that's 12 hours or 20 hours. There's always benefits.
It is harder to eat lunch than dinner. It’s true. It is much easier to not eat all day and have a big meal at night then to break my fast and then stop and not snack the rest of the day. It’s weird but I yeah, it’s a mind thing.
I eat between 6 & 8 pm so go all day or 22 hr fast - if I start earlier I just eat more- it’s like a hunger switch once I start so I eat later to reduce what I take in. This is not good according to this video.
I try to do 10pm- 2pm that seems the best fit for me. I can do that for a week at a time and not really be “bothered”. But I’m ripped. I want to gain muscle. Never had a weight issue. Did have stomach issues and joint pain tho. I think after listening I’ll make it 8pm - 12noon
@@shantishanti1949 exactly that… it like, well I already ate so… and yeah, my body stays hungry longer. It may have to do with the size too though? Because I’m eating one meal at the end, I pile it up cause I’m hungry by then. When I eat lunch, I’m not as hungry so my portion is much smaller and I’m not full. Just content. I guess I could try and eat a bigger meal for lunch so that I’m not still hungry afterwards. 🤔
@@PtoRicanDBLT it’s funny when I get in from work I am really not hungry - so no stomach rumbling or weakness. I just eat because I should eat something and yes perhaps I should try to eat less at this night eating window. I cannot eat during day because that switch once on doesn’t stop and then I am hungry and eating all day. Eating at night I fall asleep and that stops me eating and the hunger switch goes off. I don’t have a FULL switch - thank goodness for tired sleep switch or I would eat until the Monty Python sketch and the waifer thin mint!
Your forgetting autophagyFor longevity and all around health doesn’t matter how much fat you have on your body cleaning your body out is essential for longevity and anti-aging
@CRMS that's a good question! How do you clean out your body? It is not an overnight thing. You do it by drinking water and eating good healthy food regularly, no junk. And no stress.
@@matilda4406 Yes this is the first video I've noticed that mentions possible bad effects of fasting for those not overweight. Imo autophagy mostly involves protein. I'm on the Zone Diet (a balanced, minimal calorie diet that allows only enough carb to supply the brain without ketosis) and I try to reduce my protein intake a little to encourage autophagy.
This is my second video I have watched of you. I can tell that you’re educated and the information you provide is not opinionated. Those are my reasons for becoming a new subscriber :)
I definitely noticed that I went a bit overboard with my fasting for a few years and I realised that it must have been my thyroid. I would get cold hands and feet, feel a bit flat or fatigued, and have trouble with sleep.. I would do 2 or 3 day fasts once or twice a week. I think we as humans tend to think instinctually that 'more is better' but finding the right balance is important. I do OMAD pretty much everyday now and will occasionally do a 48 hour fast. But mainly I prioritise getting enough salt (esp. since i'm active), red meat, weight lifting, and proper sleep. Feel way better now and I can see better results than when I was fasting more. I think i'll go back to two meals a day once I reach my leanness goal.
You're exactly right what we do all the time we do none of the time. people take a good thing , and then they go nuts on it.. and ruin the actual benefit
I like to eat in the morning and end my feeding at 4pm. As a carpenter I really don’t want to get dizzy during the day. My schedule dictates that I cannot break my fast at 10am anyway.
I work in HVAC field and was worried like you about energy. Started at 12-12. Migrating slowly. Now I'm in 18-6. For some reason I ignore, the last 2 hours before breaking fast gest some sudden need to finish what I'm doing so I get some burst of ideas and energy for physical work
ingest Pink salt. I too work in the trades. You can extend your fast and have more success even if you don't extend you fast by adding good salt as a supplement to your diet. Your body needs salt whether you're eating or not so, just skipping one meal a day is already cutting back 1/3 on your sodium intake. If I'm working in the heat especially or as a pre-workout I will drink water with 1/4 tsp pink Himalayan salt and one quarter teaspoon of the product called no salt. Always consult with your trusted healthcare provider.
I have hypothyroidism. I also have autoimmune disease (as evidence by my Cyrex Array 5 results - no diagnosis as my FNP said the specifics wouldn’t change his POC). I do the early time-restricted feeding as described in this video and it works great for me. I usually have my first meal between 10:30-12 and then stop eating by 6. I used to have a huge spike of cortisol at 4 AM, would wake up wired but tired, and then be depleted for the rest of the day. Now I wake around 6 AM without an alarm and go for walk outside in the fresh air and get to enjoy the sunrise which is also good for the circadian rhythm.
May I ask you how did you know that your cortisol levels were high at that time? Did you measure it somehow? Sorry for thr question, I am in a similar situation and I don't know how if there is a way to check my cortisol levels home. Thank you. Thank you.
@@kittyschupler580my FNP ordered a saliva test for me through ZRT Labs. It’s been 5-6 years since I did it but I believe that I spit into a vial four separate times over a 24-hour period. My waking cortisol was off the charts high (literally not able to be plotted). The rest of my day was suboptimal to nonexistent. I would wake at 4AM wired and unable to go back to sleep though I felt like I didn’t sleep well at all and have no energy to function the rest of the day. I *believe* that I got the tests at a discount through my provider but you can order them directly from the ZRT website on your own.
The increase in cortisol makes sense. When you fast you also get increases in adrenaline. Your body puts you in a state of alertness and stress making it easier for hunting for historical context.
As a challenge I've been increasing the IF hours to see if I would ever get cravings or anxiety to eat. So far most I've gotten is 58 hours before I've felt the need to eat. And I get super focused and sharp when fasting and I like it.
The earlier I eat, the more chances I'll feel hungry in the evening and might eat something, especially when I'm tired or simply bored at the end of the day.
I find that whatever time I start earing for the day, I will want to continue until bed. Lately I've tried a set cut-off time of two hours before my (much varied) bedtime and that seems to work ok.
During deployments in '08 we would only eat once a day. I think we were eating at around 1000 cal a day. We were very strong and had very lean muscle tissue. I think I came back at about 8% BMI. I felt great everyday.
Well, I find that 16:8 works for me. So I stop eating at 8:30 pm (and I got what my body needs are) and then each again at 12:30 pm the next day. Coffee (black) and tea keep my stomach busy and because I am sleeping through most of my fast, it is really easy. I workout during my fast to keep distracted. I am having an easier time meeting my water needs. I have a feeding window of 12:30 pm - 8:30 pm. 8 hrs to get food in and the focus is healthy eating and getting all the nutrients I need. Again, I do eat what my body needs. Morning are more peaceful, not worrying about food. My mind is clearer too. Love it!
I've been intermittent fasting since may, and dropped 30lbs. I've been actively excercising/lifting for about 20+ years, but I never followed any specific diet. I figured out that I get this odd bloat in the morning if I eat early. My eating window is at 1-9 pm. No more bloating, and 30lbs in fat loss. Nothing much was added, just cardio, cooking my own meals, and paying more attention to what I put in my body. Like more than I already did Now, the best part is that sexual performance has gone way up, but we won't go too far into that lol! The key is to ignore the initial hunger pangs
Though initially difficult, once I trained my body to not eat past 2-3pm, I reset my schedule and am now never hungry at night at all and it is super easy to maintain. I eat when I get hungry, which is between 10-11am and I eat either one extended grazing meal or I eat at two different times so my eating window is usually about four hours. I eat primarily whole food plant based. I'm 47 years old, not on any medications (I don't even keep ibuprofin or aspirin or anything like that in my house), feel absolutely amazing, sleep like a baby, wake up ready to hit the ground running, and am 125 lbs. What he says is what Dr. Greger and Dr. Huberman say, which is no surprise because they also report on sound scientific research.
@@rickspalding3047 Uhh… you can Google the studies he illustrates in the video. I agree that having the links would be more convenient. However, looking up the studies on your own just takes a small amount of effort. It doesn’t make the vid useless.
I started a fasting regime a year and a half back, it was something I had entertained doing and finally just did ha. Not for health reasons per say but for more spiritual benefits, though I can't deny that those really can't be fully separated. I started a practice known as born day fasting, which means you fast on the day you are born every week, so I fast every Tuesday. About six months into doing it I don't even feel hungry anymore on a Tuesday, I really don't notice it as to making any efforts, in fact I feel so amazing on Wednesdays I would never want to skip a fasting day lol it would throw off the rhythm I have created that really benefits my week. I think there are major benefits to making a routine and choosing a specific day and sticking with that day however that works for someone. I also fast on new moons, so I have a fasting cycle set in motion there as well. Now I did my first 3 day fast also a spiritual practice inline with the winter solstice, where the day of the solstice is a dry fast and regular water fast on either day before/after. Now since then it seems to work out for me that every few months I have a new moon and my born day fast hit a day apart or in succession, so I just turn those into 3 day fasts as well. So born day fasting, new moon fasting, yearly solstice fast and depending how the cycles work I get an opportunity for a 3 day fast every quarter/season it turn out and I take it. Whatever way someone wants to choose to sync their fasts and keep a schedule I think is important, there are reasons why the ancients tended to sync fasts to specific times, and there are a lot of benefits to keeping a consistent schedule with fasts that I have noticed as to my general overall health I wasn't expecting but certainly have experienced in my fasting schedule.
This was a fortuitous video that came up on my screen. My wife has thyroid issues that she takes meds for and she recently started IF. She has noticed that she isn’t sleeping and wakes often throughout the night. I will recommend that she adjust her feeding window. Thanks for the info.
The best I felt was when I ate at about 8 am and had a last meal at 5:00 pm. I worked out a lot and incorporated lots of lean meat and veg. I’m kinda stuck now because stress triggered lupas and ra… I do intermittent fasting but eat at 11:00 and stop at 7:00. I think I will listen to my body and have that earlier window with the exercise before eating. It’s so difficult to get out of the pain cycle when life is busy.
I had type 2 diabetes and was on Glipizide. But I kept having severe low blood sugar events. My doctor wanted me to switch to another med. I said no. I’m going to reverse my diabetes. I cut out all grains, all sugars, all high carb fruits and veggies. I started fasting 18/6 on 7/15/2021. Today, 9/24/2021, I have lost 22 lbs. I no longer take any diabetic meds. My blood sugars are
I used to break my fast after my evening training about 8-11pm. I switched to 2 fatty meals before and a clean shake after. I'm far leaner now and definatly sleep better.
Thank you for explaining this option. I've been struggling with my intermittent fasting, wondering why I hadn't lost any weight. However I've stuck with it since February of this year. I'll be changing things up & hopefully see the results I've been striving for :)
Sounds like you may need to reduce your carbs and sugar or lengthen the duration of your fast. The human body can store around 3 days of energy in cells throughout the body in the form of glycogen. You need to burn through this storage before your body switches to burning fat.
@@TetrahedronIX thank you for this information. However I actually have drastically reduced my carbs since last December 2020. As of February this year I was able to eliminate all carbs with exception of some in natural foods. I've been very strict since then. I do battle a form of hypothyroidism & in May of 2017 half of my thyroid was removed due to a cancerous nodule which developed due to battling HyperPARAthyroidism twice. I've had 2 parathyroids removed. Despite dealing with these struggles I continue to find healthier ways of living because I don't want to add to my plate of health challenges. I don't plan to give up but there's definitely something not going as expected in my case. Hopefully any all changes I've made will do something to kick start my weight loss. Again I truly appreciate your information 😊
Oh my gosh!! Thank you 🙏🏻 for making this video!! I have been doing the one meal a day, but I don’t have it until 6. So I have experienced everything you said. I’m going to follow what you said regarding timing now. Thank you! 😊
Great video as usual. You have been highlighting for quite sometime about the importance of having your last meal a good few hours before bed time and I suspect quite a few people that fast like myself find it hard to make that shift. I've stepped back on to the OMAD world and have found it easier to eat earlier with this method and still not feel hungry in the evening. As long as my diet is clean and I'm focusing on high volume low calorie foods (damn those sweet potatoes have a high satiety level 😄) being as active and big as I am it can be a struggle getting all the calories / macros in within such a small window but I love a challenge
I have been eating the same way for years now... Generally I will start eating around 2 pm but on occasion it may be a bit earlier like 1 (but its just easier to do 2 pm for me). And I'll usually will be done by 5. On rare occasions it may be 6. And my circadian rhythm is working great! I get sleepy automatically when the sun starts going down...like around 8:30 pm. And I tend to wake up around 5 am. Eat low carb. Mainly 1.5 pounds of beef a day with some organic apples, carrots and sometimes some prunes (for extra potassium). My HRV is 84 today! Early next year I will be 50 YO. And I have lots of energy. I just walked 15 miles. Then I relax the rest of the day and wind down for the evening. I do wake up multiple times during the night but that is linked to my autism & hypermobility: its very common in this subset of people from what I understand. Last trip to the DR said my weight was 110 and I was 5'4". Have a limited diet due to celiac & food sensitivities but I don't need any meds and my stats like blood pressure, blood sugar, etc are normal.
Hello. I follow more or less same schedule. Some days have same issues during night. For me have to do with restrict water ingestion from 3pm, proper body temperature in night time and lots of activities or physical work in day time
My father was told to go on the gi diet when he got a diagnosis of type 2. I encouraged him to listen to Dr fung and showed him your channel as well as a couple other people who actually deal with these things.
I had to give up my Alternate Day Fasting due to insanely high cortisol and due to that, very high cholesterol, HS-CRP, Sed Rate, and Fibrogen. I have taken a three month vacation from it and I hope to start up again in October. Only because it was very effective and I am hoping that I can drop the weight and get to normal weight even if other things go haywire. I do think you have to be careful with fasting. You can't do it all the time.
Fasting works. Let your body use all its fuel before filling up again. My longest was 5 days. We need to sleep, and fast on lemon water or something similar a few times a year. It’s a major reset and I lost 30-40 lbs this past year, gaining strength and ridding fat. It’s life giving.
I've been doing OMAD for quite awhile now and your tip to open the eating window earlier is very helpful to me and I plan to do that. Thanks for the video and useful information!
Great info, very informative and alot more to it than just missing a meal...thanks....wondered why I had a shocking sleep after fasting for a day...there you go.Thanks again.
I’m 52 and take your Adrenal Thyroid Assist to be proactive. I do time restricted eating from 15-20 hrs daily. I try to start by 11-12 & finish by 6 but sometimes it’s 8. How do we know if we are having issues? What should we look for as signs to watch for? Thanks!
I think there's so many variations of this fasting so depending on how u do it and ur own bodies functions and needs can have similar results So basically my hormones might be 20 points less then urs but my metabolizing might be better then ur there's alot going on in here that isn't the same as anyone else but I think when u empty ur body for periods of time it lets every energy consuming function rest amd ur body naturally starts looking for stuff to do like run around finding things to fix
I have heard and read about plenty of benefits that come from intermitten fasting and also extendet fasting periods that affect many processes in the body, such as gene-repair mechanisms, reduction of inflammatory responses, Autophagy and a elevation of the immune functioning. Sure, the insuline control is a worthy aspect of fasting, but I think perfectly healthy people should certainly also practice fasting regularly, as it has so many more benefits.
My understanding is that cortisol is counter-regulatory to insulin. As you eat, especially carbohydrates, insulin rises turning cortisol off, or at least decreasing its output. Eating carbs at night for people with cortisol dysregulation can help drop cortisol levels which may improve ability to fall asleep at night. Am I missing something here?
This evening begins the Day of Atonement. I asked God this morning to confirm that He wanted me to fast because it doesn't explicitly state in the Bible that people fasted for the Day of Atonement, even though people do fast every year for this Holy day. Pretty amazing. What made you post this video today?
Are you Jewish? These were the laws for the Jews only. We are saved by faith -NOT of works so any man should boast. Also never tell others if you fast for your reward will only be the telling of others. God bless. 🙏❤️
I am sure someone already said it. I enjoy your content, and I am sure it was an unintentional slip. Effect is a noun. Affect is a verb. Maybe a quick edit to the opening thumbnail.
Your videos are always so particularly interesting! Just the right measure of accessibility backed up by actual scientific findings, and the topics themselves are fantastically interesting too, some of it has been really new to me, even though I ve been watching suchtype videos for ages, and your presentation is really pleasant, too. So I guess what I m trying to express here is a big, resounding thank you for your continuing efforts :)
"Eat Early, Sleep Early" OUTSTANDING !!! Great video and love the shirt - they should wrap crime scene tape around mcdonalds and all other fast food joints and declare a nationwide epidemic
In the beginning, you kinda imply that "healthy" people shouldn't fast. I'd suggest that occasional fasting is both ancestrally consistent and healthy, period.
Yeah, weren’t there studies that showed that fasting and caloric restriction increase lifespan, or have there been recent studies that nullified those studies?
our ancestors didn't always HAVE food. Sometimes they did, and ate, and sometimes they didn't. My folks were children during the Great Depression so I'm sure things were tight. I've been eating one meal a day or less during this whole pandemic thing to avoid going to the stores as often, and to save money on food. I just stock up when I do go and I'm overdue for a trip. Fridge and freezer are empty but I 've still got other stuff. I'd always rather have fresh or frozen though. Had a really horrible thing happen 8 years ago and it took my appetite away from the trauma. I KNEW I "should" eat to stay alive but I just wasn't hungry. I had to force myself to eat something once a day, usually coffee with hot chocolate and 2 pieces of toast . And I had given up both bread and coffee years ago. One time I went almost 4 days without eating, just water. I was never hungry, I just started to feel a little bit weak that last day so I figured I should eat something. I lost 30 lbs and did not have 30 to lose, I haven't seen that number on the scale since I was 14 and 3 inches shorter. It's back now
Here's my problem. I do fasting every other day, and eat basically keto, mostly eggs. I have eaten this way all my life. I follow a couple of docs on TH-cam and listen to their plans. Here's another doc with different ideas. How in the world can a layperson know which plan to follow? Very confusing!
If that is working for you, you're satisfied with your health, energy, weight, etc then why change? What you are currently doing IS what an increasing number of MDs are recommending. Slight variations of it are not really important.
What do you think of eating Brazil nuts for selenium in helping regulate your thyroid. I'm a 52 yr old woman who exercises and does my best to eat healthy foods. For my last tsh test is was slightly over the standard range so my dr automatically wanted to put me on levothyroxine. I said no thank you and I will lower it with my diet.
I wish I knew this before. I did intermittent fasting every day for a year as a healthy, active 40-year-old, eventually I developed hypothyroidism, it wasn’t autoimmune, my anti-TG and anti-TPO are very low. I don’t know if my thyroid will go back to being normal again, I’ve been taking 50mcg T4 daily for a year now.
@@Queef_Storm no, just regular 16/8 IF. I don't remember any video talking about IF ever mentioning counting calories. I stopped eating at 10pm, skipped breakfast and started eating again at 2pm, didn't seem like a big deal to me, I never felt weak (before developing hypo, that is) or malnourished, and exercised regularly.
Great content Mike, it makes a lot of sense. With IF as a healthy person I experience exactly what you described. I will definitely switch to early restricted feeding.
Definitely a lot of nuances with regard to feeding. There is some logic to extending the daily feeding window for protein because it is difficult to get sufficient protein in a short window. However, the protein and nutrient sparing functions of the body are still being exposed within the research. Fasting forces the body to be more efficient - this alters the intake and disposal calculation. A 'normal' intake could lead to excesses because the energy/amino acids/nutrients are not being used fast enough. The disposal rate is not wrong, but the feeding intake rate may be excessive. Arguing against fasting and pushing for more intake seems counterproductive That said, aggressive dry fasts require more care. Purging too many good cells is probably not too useful
I feel like something is happening to my thyroid because every time I do keto I get high heart rate. When they test my thyroid it hasn’t changed enough to be out of range. I think it’s possibly lowering my need for replacement and maybe my dose of levothyroxine needs to be reduced. Don’t know how to convince my PA that’s what is happening.
most likely your elevated heart rate is due to an increase in adrenaline. Low carbs produces lower insulin, which allows the release of Glucagon and adrenaline to start the fat burning process.
I really wish someone would have information on hyPER thyroid. I have been looking since I started keto over three years ago, but everything I see about thyroid is for hyPO. *sigh*
Great info. I know that I feel better if I eat my first meal around 10 AM and finish my last meal by 3 PM. With working from home due to Covid, it works out well.
I eat when I’m hungry! I’m finally at around 15 hours fasting, trying to get to 16. I work early in the morning, and off work in the early afternoon. So it would be awesome for my schedule to eat later in the day anyway :)
Both my cortisol and estrogen levels are above normal. A health consultant was so determined to claim I have diabetes and my mother was worried it was thyroid because of genetics, but those have been ruled out. I have limited control over my diet so what I do is take ashwagandha to stabilize my cortisol. I am going to leave my estrogen the way it is at even though it caused some breast development.
Intermittent fasting really messed up my hormones. I did IF appropriately (I didn’t overeat at meals, in fact I lost my appetite). I was trying to lose about 5lbs and ended up gaining 5lbs, mostly in my hips and thighs (so my estrogen got jacked, not good). I had to stop after 6 weeks because it was clear it was not good for my body.
I’ve been on IF for years, I have low bf. And just found out my thyroid is low. T3. So there you. Im just going to stop eating early at night, and eat in the morning.
I'm a type 1 diabetic male (32) who is overweight, and I'm thinking about starting 24-hour fasting twice a week. Any suggestions or resources I should check out?
Pat ,check out DR.Jason Fung ,you will find a plethora of advice and he's a specialist in diabetic care. I know type 1 can be tricky, He has a TH-cam videos and check him out at "The Fasting method " his book "The obesity code" is also excellent! Cheers!
I started IF half a year ago. I eat late and go to sleep after midnight. My fasting and eating hours varies, but I rarely start eating before late in the afternoon, and typically have last meal couple of hours before midnight, sometimes later. I have hated breakfast all my life and having to eat relatively early and stopping in late afternoon would not be sustainable for me. And it was very very important for me, to find a way that would feel easy and I would be able to continue long term. I genuinely like eating later and feeling full when I go to sleep. Since I started IF, I have lost 20 kilograms with no particular effort. I just don't eat added sugars and starches anymore. My fasting windows vary from at least 16 to more hours each day, with occasional 30-40 hour windows every now and then (once in 3-4 weeks). On average, about 19-20 hours. What surprised me most, was how easy it has been. And big plus is that you don't have to think about food much. I need to lose some 9 kilograms more to be in normal BMI range. (And I will!) I am 50 and premenopausal, and have slight insulin resistance and slow thyroid (markers in spring not tragic but out of the norm).
I really appreciate the rationality of your approach to fasting. Some people push fasting on absolutely everybody and say it’s a panacea for everything. I am a trainer and coach myself and I don’t think it’s for everyone. I have a BMI of 18 , body fat of 19 and naturally low blood sugar, good sleep etc. My body loathes fasting (few people enjoy it but I think it affects me particularly,). Also, my excellent naturopath doesn’t think anyone with any thyroid issues should fast. It’s interesting though, fasting does seem to have other benefits- I feel like I can get autophagy in ways that are personally healthier for me, but I’m still curious about fasting to address specific health conditions like autoimmunity. If you have an autoimmune *thyroid* condition, but are otherwise metabolically healthy, it’s not clear if fasting might be helpful. Or how to make it more comfortable(?) or at least safe if you’re already lean and your blood sugar tends to be low.
Absolutely true. Like exercise fasting should be approached with care. It is beneficial for many reasons other than losing weight. Detoxification is the most important. Clean house but be patient. Go slow. Be cautious. The effects can be amazing
I was estatic to -- for the first time in my 52 years -- successfully lose weight w/fasting (and I had tried *everything* outside of surgery). Unfortunately, I gained it all back and haven't been able to lose it again despite extended fasting, etc. (I'm also mostly carnivore.) It's super frustrating. I'm afraid that maybe I really really wrecked my metabolism this time. ... (I have Hashimoto's, surgical menopause, and CFS. But I've never had issues with insulin resistance.)
Can you do a video (or direct me to one you’ve already done) discussing the benefits from losing 10-20% body weight? I’ve been losing weight since I had my baby in January but I was already overweight before getting pregnant. Technically, according to BMI, I’m still obese but I have lost 30 lbs and I’m aiming to lose another 20-30 by the end of this year. I would just be interested to see what the science is on losing 10% as a form of encouragement for those of us in the process of improving overall health.
One thing people should realized is that nowadays 90% of the population is chronically stressed... Prolonging the morning rise of cortisol throughout the day might not be best variant for better health... So.. I eat heavy breakfast.. Not immediately after wake up, but may be 1-2 hrs later... Protein and complex carbs.. Gives me the energy to go through the day, training, etc.. Have my second and last meal around 4-5 pm.. Fats and protein with some veggies... So far, so good...
Muslims fast during the holy month of Ramadan, which occurs on the ninth month of the lunar-based Islamic calendar, all Muslims are required to abstain from food and drink from dawn to dusk for 30 days. ... Fasting during Ramadan means abstinence from all food or drink, including water and chewing gum, from dawn to sunset.
Whenever my dog gets a lump, I fast her for a few days and it goes away. Same with our cat, had infected teeth, vet said surgery was only option.. instead we fasted him, and put him on wholesome food. . It went away in days, never came back.
@@KatieZeldin It was hard to fast our cat as well, I don't think we did it for more than a day.. Then we fed him raw salmon for a few weeks. . Now he does eat some cat food, but he also gets all the meat he wants. In the backyard I see him eating grass, and bugs. I know that's important as well. In terms of Cat obesity, I think sometimes there is an issue with certain types of cat food, not having enough nutritional density, so the cat has to eat more of it to feel satisfied. In the wild, cats are carnivores, so their main food should be good quality meat.
@me I appreciate your advice and trying to be helpful, but believe me I have been to Dr after Dr, or PA at least. Not one is willing to switch me from Synthroid. They say because my age and heart risk. I have just given up on finding anything that works. Even Dr Childs says that if your hormones aren't properly balanced, you won't lose weight and he's not just talking about thyroid hormone.
My thyroid is out of wack and my belly fat is off balance compared to the rest of my belly. I have massive anxiety which probably making it worse. I used to fast all the time. Then life got complicated and I stopped. I want to get back to it. I sort of miss it.
I hope you don't mind me saying this but give your cares to Jesus. Eat a good diet without much processed foods. Even chips have those bad oils. And above all don't eat sugar. But eat some fruit but not a lot. Apples are really good and Kiwi.
This is why the fasting kits are helpful that I use and now sell. I will fast for the rest of my life. As an Olympic lifter this I want to protect my muscles while fasting.

I don't have a thyroid. Should I be fasting? If not. What should I do to help loose weight and reduce blood sugar? Thanks for the help and these informative videos.
This is so helpful. I've been intermittent fasting for over a year. Along with regular exercise i've lost 45lbs! I've had trouble sleeping and it never dawned on me that I might not need to fast so much. I only eat from 12pm-7pm. I'm going to try the sleep early eat early and change my fasting schedule to see if it helps me sleep better. Thanks for that awesome information!
cutting out my carbs and doing a high fat diet gives me bad anxiety, I've tried it multiply times and I always get the same side effect. Anyone advice for fixing this? Thanks 🙏
Me too. It took about 7 weeks before my adrenals/anxiety to settle. It was he'll getting there, but it did settle. Ashwaganda and b1 are a must. Also, if restarting, I'd go slower - if you have adrenal problems that create anxiety, your body views the diet as a stressor and over-reacts. At least mine does. Taking longer to start is better.
I did a few years intermittent fasting, mostly until 2pm and I did wel on that, not all year around just a few weeks so now and then, also I did a 72 hours a few times a year. But I got a thyroid storm a month ago, my body was attacking my thyroid, I had a heartbeat of 140 in rest. I got medication , it goes better now, but Sunday I started my 72 hour fast as haven Don it for almost a year, this morning I reached the 40 hours and when I woke up my heartbeat was 123, so for me it was a sighn to stop there with the fast. I am thinking now it is maybe not so good to do a 72 hour fast with a hyperthyroid, any thoughts?

Almost the same as my schedule I've been doing it forever. I don't drink coffee at all though and I only drink water until my lunch. Billions of people fast for religious reasons for their entire lives.
If you're already lean you obviously don't need to do extended fasting.
But 1-4 days here and there is nothing and only beneficial.
I think we all should do IF, whether that's 12 hours or 20 hours. There's always benefits.
You can be lean due to malabsorption or other physiological factors. I am one of these and prolonged fasting has helped me tremendously.
The SDA fast every day. Their recommended diet has their last meal at 1PM
My thoughts exactly.
@CRMS fasting causes autophagy. Look it up
@CRMS that's a good question!

You're exactly right what we do all the time we do none of the time. people take a good thing , and then they go nuts on it.. and ruin the actual benefit
why go back to 2mad? omad is better for health and longevity
@@poollife777 Why was omad the problem then? Sounds like you just needed to consume more protein during your one meal.
I’m cool as a cucumber until day 4 -7 then I’m fired up.
My mom chews crushed ice at night, so she doesn’t eat. She would eat from boredom.
I find that whatever time I start earing for the day, I will want to continue until bed. Lately I've tried a set cut-off time of two hours before my (much varied) bedtime and that seems to work ok.
I am the same. If I eat early, especially something unhealthy, 9/10 times i will overeat that day.
Love it!
How timely! I just did my first fast where I missed 4 meals. Was researching on how this impact the thyroid which I'm at risk at. Thank you so much!
Like more than I already did
Now, the best part is that sexual performance has gone way up, but we won't go too far into that lol!
This video couldn't come at a better time. A lot of people, including me, are experiencing hypothyroidism (high TSH) and insomnia from fasting.

Sounds like you may need to reduce your carbs and sugar or lengthen the duration of your fast. The human body can store around 3 days of energy in cells throughout the body in the form of glycogen. You need to burn through this storage before your body switches to burning fat.

I think there's so many variations of this fasting so depending on how u do it and ur own bodies functions and needs can have similar results
So basically my hormones might be 20 points less then urs but my metabolizing might be better then ur there's alot going on in here that isn't the same as anyone else but I think when u empty ur body for periods of time it lets every energy consuming function rest amd ur body naturally starts looking for stuff to do like run around finding things to fix

@@ciscotx74 what I meant to say if I had slowed down a bit was that it is unhealthy, in my opinion, to fast
@@CarbageMan I should read some of those. In my experience, I know people who always fasted and ended up with serious medical problems

@@Highintensityhealth 🙏🙏🙏 good information I’m going to share this with my friend
Oh, thank you for this. Great news.
Thank you Mike... Great information as usual... 👍
Listen to your body! Do you feel good, have energy and focus , sleep well?
Great. Love from Egypt ❤
Pastured eggs are a great source of selenium with none of the anti nutrients associated with nuts.
Take it easy on brazil nuts keep it to 2 to 3 a day. They can have too much selenium.
I wish I knew this before. I did intermittent fasting every day for a year as a healthy, active 40-year-old, eventually I developed hypothyroidism, it wasn’t autoimmune, my anti-TG and anti-TPO are very low. I don’t know if my thyroid will go back to being normal again, I’ve been taking 50mcg T4 daily for a year now.
were you counting your calories?
@@Queef_Storm no, just regular 16/8 IF. I don't remember any video talking about IF ever mentioning counting calories. I stopped eating at 10pm, skipped breakfast and started eating again at 2pm, didn't seem like a big deal to me, I never felt weak (before developing hypo, that is) or malnourished, and exercised regularly.
Great content Mike, it makes a lot of sense. With IF as a healthy person I experience exactly what you described. I will definitely switch to early restricted feeding.
Nice shirt! Great vid!
Arguing against fasting and pushing for more intake seems counterproductive
That said, aggressive dry fasts require more care.
Great video. I have found that it’s much easier controlling my sweet tooth when I stop eating by 5pm.
I've found it's much easier to control my sweet tooth when I stop drinking Dr Pepper. LOL.
I used to walk 20 mins, then I moved to 30 and 40 mins, now I do an hour, 3 miles everyday. I am also picky on what I eat for the day.
Thank you for the great video!
Where did you get the cool t-shirt??.. I like it! Excellent advice, by the way.
Thanks, very helpful and a good reminder.
great video, thanks mike.
I eat when I’m hungry! I’m finally at around 15 hours fasting, trying to get to 16. I work early in the morning, and off work in the early afternoon. So it would be awesome for my schedule to eat later in the day anyway :)
Ur content is always on point brother👍
I had to stop after 6 weeks because it was clear it was not good for my body.
were you eating good food and avoiding cold drinks such as coke n pepsi?
My tsh went up from 1.5 to 7.22 on keto plus fasting
Holy Frick thats not good. Same thing happened to me!!
Mine did too.
Plus I got very constipated. I’m going to retest in 2m
I know type 1 can be tricky,
He has a TH-cam videos and check him out at "The Fasting method " his book "The obesity code" is also excellent!

Could you do fasting, parathyroid and bone density.
Can fasting cause accelerated grey hair? I believe there's a link between cortisol and hydrogen peroxide
Wow, I wish I could fast my cat. He's obese, but when he's hungry and begs for food, it's hard for me to ignore him. Do you have any tips?
@@KatieZeldin
It was hard to fast our cat as well, I don't think we did it for more than a day..

How would that possible effect a person without a thyroid and has hypo
Same question. I have no thyroid due to ablation and on Synthroid only.
@me T4 converts to T3
Love your T-Shirt !
11:00 Im 19% Bodyfat or so and i always do 20/4 or longer. Because i have school from 7:45 untill 15:35, i cant eat in that time and thats why i fast there and im eating from 16:00 to 19:00 and im not doing it like you said. Could you do one about Telomares and fasting?
@@kelleykeenan628 Thanks for the reply people Don't understand this side effect but it happens every time I try to do a diet like this.
