    Hello !
Here we go again with some episodes of Twilight Zone because I have a little gap on my schedule but not enough to begin a whole new bingewatching, and I never forget that project of reacting to the best episodes of the show. And clearly, this one represents well all of what I like in this show : with one story, we can explore a lot of deep subjects, and everything is still accurate now in our societies, it can make everyone think about the world we live in.
For sure, here, we have another time the subject of the books being explored, the fact that people are mocking the ones still reading. And here it's worse than that, it's forbidden, it's obsolete. And a librarian would be the worst profession ever, so much that you can be eliminated because of it. It's an episode also about dictatures, eliminating people who don't fit with what they think/want, and considering only the state, the crowd, destroying the idea of being an individual with personal feelings and rights. Words and freedom, that's the subject of this episode.
I'm still french, so I'm still sorry if my english hurts you.

Hello guys ! Just a little comment to tell you that your comments here are the reason why I'm gonna continue this project on my channel. I know that it's videos only here and there, when I have the place on my schedule, and I know not a lot of people are watching them. But each time time, you guys, you respond present and more than that, you love these videos, you want to talk about it in the comments, and that's what I want on my channel : to react to a show I love, to have people who truly love this show to watch it, so much that you want to talk about it, that you're glad to have a place to talk about it. Two more episodes coming in the next weeks, and then, you know, we'll see 🙈😅

This is my favorite episode of The Twilight Zone.
It's scary how this episode released in 1961 mirrors what is happening today.

There's some really impactful Twilight Zone episodes, and then there's this one. I've watched about half the original show and this is by far the most hard hitting when you're done watching.

I like this episode because there are layers to the characters and motivations. The librarian is not just this meek and mild man who bravely faces death. He's clever. He figured out how to flip his execution into a public exposure of state hypocrisy and weakness. The chancellor wasn't just evil and uncaring, he was a wimp! He shows, on live television, that he himself does not believe in all the state nonsense he constantly promotes. He is so dumb that he thought by escaping the room he escaped death.

My favorite TTZ episode, one that is especially relevant in this day and age when there is a ceaseless war on truth (and those who tell it) by those in power everywhere.

Just like the State in the episode , any state that does not respect individual's rights and dignity will ultimately become "Obsolete"

Wordsworth had clearly been thinking about his probable fate for some time and laid plans. The Twilight Zone included several episodes with similar themes, like Eye of the Beholder.

This is definitely a Top 10 best episode to me, but I gotta say 1 thing I find interesting about this episode is how quickly the Chancellor is declared obsolete. In the beginning of the episode Romney is declared obsolete after an almost 2 year observation period. However, from the time the Chancellor arrives to Romney's room, the execution from the bomb, and him returning to his office only an hour or so passed. What I interpret from this is that the State has to keep up its appearance in order for average citizens to continue to believe in it otherwise they might rebel against it and demand a change to the system. So, once the State sees the Chancellor showing weakness and being a coward in front of the entire nation, they quickly replace him with his underling we saw at the beginning of the episode and declare him obsolete to prove it was the man and not the State that was flawed. Finally, this reminds me of the story of Harrison Bergeron where a similar government structure enforces equality amongst all its citizens but not its members and any sad memories of individuals or events are erased to keep up this facade of a perfect society.

As an old guy who (believe it or not) saw these shows when they first were shown in the early 60s (I was 7-8-9 years old)...Twilight Zone really influenced me for the rest of my life. Many of the shows had great moral lessons (including that life did NOT always have a happy ending). More than anything, it was the first tv series which had great writers, led by Rod Serling himself. Today, there are many well written tv shows, but back then tv was considered the place for those who weren't good enough to make movies. Twilight Zone changed that.

To me the thing here is that the State functions like a machine or algorithm. However the problem with this is that it is reliant upon people, so its own existence is antithetical to humanity itself. Programs overwrite the old, computers delete data when updating as the old stuff is no longer useful, but nothing a program destroys is sentient with thought and feelings. A system that does not human life unconditionally but rather only values the work that one can do for the system is always doomed to fail since it ultimately aims to destroy what keeps it alive.

The twilight zone spawned Sci fi in a mainstream way. Serling, Matheson and Beaumont where among the best original writers and adapters of other lesser known writers stories. All of which are often imitated or out right ripped off. Do the whole series and you will find a real following from real fans eventually. I'm posting this 6 months after this video dropped .

Hello ! First, it's never too late to comment, I read all of them 😊 I have that project on my channel since a while now : I react to some episodes of the show (I selected on imdb the 50 episodes which had the best notes) when I have the time on my schedule, a few episodes each time, but not in the chronological way. I made a playlist for the show on my channel, if you want to check it 😊

I don't mean to criticize, but could you either pause the video when you talk about it, or turn up the volume? My volume on my computer is all the way up and I'm still having trouble hearing the dialogue when you're not say anything, but when you're talking over it, I can't hear anything. Like I said, I don't mean to criticize, but I would like to enjoy both the video and your reaction.

This is the most unambiguous episode of the Twilight Zone. IT's as important today as it was when it was released. In todays' world we have the same fascist and order based ideologies threatening to supplant justice, and bring in terror and destruction to those who will not conform. No matter where we live, this push is real, and it's growing.
We must continue to oppose those who would call other humans obsolete and whoever opposes civil rights for all people... no matter who they are. These principles are just as important today, as they have been since man first began to make rules for one another.

Unfortunately, this poignant Twilight Zone episode is becoming reality. From the state eliminating God with an edict to the measurement of a person's worth being directly tied to how well they serve the state. We are all on the verge of this amoral, brutal, and heartless future. This is why people should vote to give governments as little power over their daily lives as possible.

Great reaction to one of my personal favorites! The episode isn't so much about books as it is about the tendency of extremist ideologies to suppress knowledge, reason, logic and to devalue human life in the form of "the others." In Hitler's case, it was non-Aryans. In the case of the many populist movements that are plaguing the West today, it's usually minorities or immigrants. Books as they are portrayed and some of today's websites that are repositories of scientific, cultural, historical and philosophical information are effectively the same for the purposes of this episode. in terms of how religion is addressed in the episode, remember that communist dictatorships are also atheistic. Sterling was definitely writing with the Soviet Union also in mind. The Twilight Zone is definately proof that certain truths transcend time.

This episode has always been my favorite of the Twilight Zone. Interestingly, when this episode first came out, I believed in god, and the story's theme resonated with me. Now, I am an atheist, but the episode still resonates. Ironically, here in the U.S., we have extreme evangelical Christians pushing their beliefs and prejudices, based on their religion. Many religious people advocate removing books from libraries that they don't believe fit their view. There have even been book-burning parties. I laugh at the irony that these lovers of the bible now want a country founded on freedom of religion, speech, and thought to urge the state to take that freedom from everyone who does not believe as they do.
