Jeremy Brett is often regarded as the definitive Sherlock Holmes. Alas he suffered from health problems, both physical and mental, which are discernible in the latter series and led to delays in filming towards the end. That aside, it would be worth your while seeking out a full episode to immerse yourself in the atmosphere.
This series of Sherlock Holmes is entirely faithful to the stories. Jeremy Brett didn’t just play Holmes he became him and was stern upon the point that it must be true to Doyle. It’s canon and it’s fabulous
Oh, do watch the Granada Series (Granada was the studio who made this show from 1984 to 1995), it is 41 episodes, and basically all of them (with a few exceptions) are real gems of making the characters from the books truly come to life, they are AMAZING. It's really Victorian England coming to LIFE. I did know about this series but I haven't actually watched it fully until very recently, and I honestly love the vibes older movies and shows have PRECISELY BECAUSE they are more subtle and less americanized (it is an english story ffs, OF COURSE it is supposed to be english af, duh) Personally I think once someone has experienced Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes, one cannot accept any substitutes, so I think I shall say "watch at you own risk", actually? >;D
A lot of the new stuff is TOO exciting for me. It stresses me out no matter how much I love it. As subdued as the older stuff is, it’s easier for me to relax into watching. Plus that Sherlock Holmes is very close to the books which I love.
Did you know the actor here playing Sherlock Holmes could also sing, and appeared in the movie classic MY FAIR LADY ? He played the guy that was crushing on Audrey Hepburn and sang 'On The Street Where You Live'. 😀 ( P.S. You're welcome, we movie buffs have to stick together. 😆😂)
He also was such a good Max DeWinter (in a "Rebecca" version of 1979) that sir Laurence Oliver, who was the first actor to play the role in 1940, said to him that his (JB's) performance was better... But, there are so many other movies in which he appears / stars and show how various and wide his talent is. Pay a visit to the channel of " AMT2.0 - Remember? ", if you don't it : there's a rich playlist entirely dedicated to him in it. I hope you will enjoy it as it deserves it 😊 !
I love the slowness of Granada Holmes. It allows me to process the information as well as be eye-candy, instead of *just* being eye-candy that leaves me confused. It also provides more food for thought than some other media. It also also isn’t always a win. The heroes don’t always win (and I don’t just mean Irene Adler). I appreciate that. In this adaptation, Holmes is just a person. Watson is just a person. Mrs. Hudson is just a person. Mycroft is just a person. Moriarty is just a person. People are just people. And that’s okay. (Holmes is allowed to show his wide range of-if quickly stifled-emotion from the very start. Watson and Holmes and Mrs. Hudson all already have that established relationship that works so well because they have such beautiful chemistry.) Also, there are around forty stories, each between an hour to two hours long, so… binge away, darlings!
These are from a Granada Television production of the Sir Arthur Connan Doyle stories. Very few of the films are the actual stories. They are mostly derivative or just based on the character. I highly recommend that you check them out. The Resident Patient with Jeremy Brett is a good place to start. Its the real stories and they did around 40 or so of them including the books THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and THE SIGN OF FOUR. Jeremy Brett is the quintessential Sherlock Holmes.
I love so much of Sherlock Holmes episode especially Jeremy Brett very exceptional. My request to telecast all episodes on TH-cam. My humble request. Oscar Jacob from Mumbai.

Jeremy Brett IS Sherlock Holmes. Such a tragic loss.
Exactly!!!!!

He could sing, yes, but all of his singing was dubbed by another singer. Just like Audrey Hepburn, he was understandably upset.

I loved this series as a kid - so much so I spent my christmas book tokens on the complete Sherlock Holmes :P
Jeremy Brett is my favorite Sherlock Holmes.
Jeremy Brett fir me the finest actor to ever play Sherlock Holmes, no one could be even close to him.
Brilliant. I love this series. Best adaptation in my opinion, swiftly followed by RDJs.
