I know it's hard to tell through video, but while you were saying it has a luxury car ride, it sounded quite loud over separations in the road. Unfortunately, so many manufacturers force sporty wheels on you when you get top trims. I can't be the only person who doesn't want thin sidewalls in a daily driver...harsher ride, worse full economy, greater chance for blowout or damage if hit bigger hole.
I think what makes this so special is that there are so few of them on the road and their unique design/size. Full size sedans are rare these days (coming from someone who owns a Kia Cadenza) and seeing an Arteon is even rarer! Great stuff as always Chris!
I purchased a 2022 Arteon SE (Oryx White) in November 2022, bypassing the SEL because I was afraid I'd have issues with the 20 inch wheels. Then March 2023, I upgraded to the 2023 Arteon SEL (Kings Red Metallic) and LOVE IT! There's a night/day difference and I would suggest to anyone considering this car to opt for the SEL or SEL Premium, if you can afford it. The 20 inch wheels provide a very comfortable ride and I'm not afraid of damaging the wheels/tires (I did opt for the Tire/Wheel package as a safeguard). I completely agree with The Topher's impression of the car and it feels good to drive something that's a unicorn on the road.
@@ssr1680 I suggest driving the car a couple of times on smooth and rough road to get an idea. As a current owner, the car is a smooth operator and you'll be surprised by the power it has, however, just know there is slight turbo lag off the line but don't allow that to change your mind
Saw one of these on the road the other day and it instantly caught my eye. Thought it was a GLI at first, but when it drove past and I saw Arteon on the rear I was surprised. I had never seen one of these but damn, it looks good!

Volkswagen in Europe is among the most reliable brands out there; but in the U.S., nah not so much. They also a few scandals and lawsuits. That's why I don't buy one here in the USA

@@junobd I have a '21 SEL and it comes with the full matrix headlamp hardware. I was able to activate the dynamic light assist feature which blanks out parts of the high beams where other cars are, so cool.
North American consumers would rather mindlessly spend the extra 3K-4K for the Audi badge meaning A5 sportback or even an A4. This is a car with a very uncertain future here.
Here in the north American market, Volkswagen are trash after 50k miles (why they depreciate so bad). My mother owned a 2017 Tiguan and the amount of covered (thankfully) CPO repairs was concerning and in the end the engine died at 65k miles.
As a 2012 cc sport onwer, I was surprised by the details they had back then such as the adaptive headlights like you mentioned. Always brightening the blind spots! Mine is way too old with some mechanical failures now but I just had so much fun with it so even considered getting Arteon. Too bad my local dealers did not have any in inventory at the time I was into it... It was sad to see VW cc lines' legacy fading away :(
I purchased a 2019 Arteon SEL Premium R-Line in October 2019 for $39,500 plus tax and tags. Sticker was $48,300 including delivery/transportation cost. I had the APR+ Tune downloaded at delivery which brought it up to 358hp and 348 lb/ft torque. Best gas mileage on a 820 mile road trip was 37.8 mpg. Love this car!
Any issues with your APR+ tune? Driveability, shifting feel "factory"? I'm leaning heavily towards the same at a VW dealer, researching pros/cons, power delivery, etc.
@@caseyf3709 - No issues with the APR+ tune. If you're driving conservatively it shifts at what I believe to be the same as an Arteon that isn't tuned. When I need an extra oomph when merging or passing on to an interstate highway, that's where you'll see a big difference. Also, highway gas mileage is much better than what the manufacturer stated. People need to remember, the Arteon is not a performance car. It's a luxury sedan (as far as the VW lineup goes) and the addition of the APR+ tune makes it a little bit more fun to drive. I hope this answers your questions.

Stunning design, definitely a proper evolution from the CC in previous years. I have a VR6 CC and considering losing two cylinders for a powerband that appears to be more functional and practical on a daily basis.
Wow I’ve never heard or seen this Volkswagen Sedan but it is gorgeous!! I absolutely love the lift back design and how aggressive the front looks 👌🏽. Never thought of Volkswagen as an option (I’ve always been a Honda/Acura guy) but drove a Volkswagen beater in Europe for 3 years and never gave me any problems. This things has more horsepower and more features than my audi q5 😅, I don’t have turning headlights, tpms with actual pressure reading, auto hold and adaptive suspension! Arteon is definitely winner for the bucks.
These things looks so nice. I didn't even know they existed when I bought my S5 sportback, although it doesn't really compete with that as much as the A5 sportback lol - still, gonna be a steal on the used market.
@@brutalknife3928 Arteon has beautiful exterior styling but it ends on that. Interior is straight out of a Passat and it just feels like a non-luxury counterpart to an Audi in every aspect. I didn't drive it but simply sitting in one was enough to understand why it's so unpopular here in North America.

if they did put a VR6 in this car, it wouldn't be the VR6 you want. They would put the 3.6 vr6 out of the passat and atlas. The 3.6 is a great engine, but it doesn't like boost stock.

Look up the prototype Atreon R, they initially planned to have a Turbo VR6 featured in the car but in development they were having issues with their brand emissions portfolio but also the bigger and heavier VR6 counter acted the torque splitter in the rear. They even considered the Inline 5 from audi, but that was a dead end for their performance goals, which is why they opted in for the EA888 instead
dang i didnt know VW updated the powertrain, makes the Arteon a lot more interesting. it now has more power than the A5 sportback. this is honestly a great car now. its expensive but you almost have to say its worth it.
I have owned Audis and Volkswagens continually since 1985. I’ve had SUVs, however, I don’t want another one right now. The Arteon is just the vehicle I’ve been waiting for. I plan to buy an SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion within a few months.
I can't wait to get one of these in 6 months. The car is absolutely gorgeous. I was looking at the 2023 SEL R-Line and it comes fully equipped with everything. There is absolutely no other option to add that is necessary. Its like a Hyundai but better.
Great Review! It's an awesome car... American public has been brainwashed with SUV B.S.. This car has comfort and the capacity to carry lots of luggage or whatever you want. And it looks great! I test drove an Arteon R-Line... Handles really well!
I have 2021 and it's constantly turning heads. On multiple occasions I've walked outside of stores with couples walking around my arteon like they're at the dealer 😂😂😂
I need to spend some more time in the GTI, was so turned off by the UI at first that I kind of wrote it off but with some more time in the Golf R I got used to it. Will try to get another one in to test here soon
@@TheTopher$31k, 241hp, Hatchback, very well equipped in base form. The 11th gen Si gets a ton of attention but the GTI is the same price and it’s far easier to find them at MSRP.
the thing about VW is that they put the same engine in various models. They purposely derated the engine for certain models to avoid competition with the higher end. If you have a GTI, you can tune the engine to increase horsepower, as well as swap the turbo to get more performance out of it
Most underrated car goes under the radar for most sedan buyers you rarely see it on the road sadly this segment is dying first the Taurus and Impala then the Avalon then maxima, hopefully VW keeps this gorgeous and add hybrid to lineup

VW is killing it off in the Atlas so unfortunately the Vr6 is no more ;( Too be fair to vw, the VR6 would have never made sense in the Arteon due to emissions and consumption and VW's apprehension to slap a turbo on it really sealed the VR6's fate. Would be cool of they were able to adapt the 3.0t from the Audi's into the Arteon but they will never since it ride on an MQB chassis ;/
My '21 has the ventilated and massage seats (driver's side only for massage). Those options got dropped due to CV-19, supplier issues, but they needed to keep up with production, so they left them out on the newer models.
It's like a hybrid interior mix of the MK7 Jetta, the 7.5 Golf R, and the MK8 - I don't hate it, but wish they would've given it the MK8 virtual cockpit with HUD.
I want to buy this or a golf r or a subaru outback. My biggest complaint with the VWs is the stupid low profile tires. I have a 2015 golf r and popped the left front twice in one week on two different potholes driving in the dark. The thought of spending tens of thousands of dollars on one of the VWs and then immediately having to spend thousands more on new wwheels/tires just grates on me. There was a lot of road noise in the recording on the highway. Did you find it to be a noisy car or is that a quirk of the recording process?
i test drove one about 4 years ago , the old 280 model , in the end a bought the skoda superb 272 sportline plus , its a better buy than the arteon and my skoda had the 7 speed dual clutch which the old arteon did not have which mad it quicker 0 to 60 mph 5.3 seconds , i sold my bmw 630 gt grand turismo m sport and bought the skoda , the skoda feel considerable faster and more responsive compared to the bmw ,in the uk the superb is a brilliant buy , had 3 skoda octavia vrs before them which are good but no all wheel drive and they scrabble for grip at the lights , and the superb is a big car but its only 80 kg or so more than the octavia, as am getting old now and the wife want a small car am looking at the cupra ateca which has the 300 hp in it , i love sleeper cars and the superb was a perfect car for that , not many cars got the better of it ..
Too bad the Arteon is being phased out to make way for their EVs, but that means when I'm in the market for an used Arteon or S7/RS7, used prices are gonna be sweet since everyone else is going for a new A5/S5 instead. Arteons are already going for less than a new Jetta rn...just gotta get the DSG version.
I want to love this car but it has a very uncertain future. Rumoured to be cut soon. Meaning parts will be a pain to find. I cant even find the build and price section for this car online unless I really dig into the VW website. This is how little effort they put into marketing this car.
I mean from what i’ve heard it sits on the same platform as the A4/A5. Vw also shares the same engines between most all their platforms so while it being discontinued could hurt prices a bit, i think it’ll be manageable.
@@coredaqqer6197 That's not right. The A4/A5 is on the MLB platform which mean the engine is longitudinal. The arteon is on the MQB platform meaning the engine is transverse. Very different dynamics between the two.
Andrew Gus - I just went to the VW website, clicked "builder" , and scrolled through all the models. Arteon was listed about 3/4 of the way down. Or if you click "models" scroll to Arteon and click the model page. It opens and the option to "Build your Arteon" is prominently displayed.
I own this car and the ride is OK. It would have been great if VW was offering air suspesion as an option.. Even with the 18-inch wheels and the adaptive suspension set to most comfortable, I still feel the bumps quite a bit!

The ventilated seats are standard on that trim, but most of the time they get deleted due to the chip shortage. I hope they start putting them back in because I’d love to buy one of these updated ones in a few years, used

A little feedback here... VW is one of the few manufacturers I follow. Would be nice if VW made the design of this model and specs in a minivan version to compete with Sienna and Odssey. I don't like that there is no frame around the windows / door post area and I don't need 20" tires. I also dont care for the hatchback look, but I can see how that would be successful for this particular model and I never cared for those loud obnoxious turn signal tones either. I would find a way to disable that. I like the placement of the pushbutton start. Thats a more logical spot for it, though I'm old school and still prefer keys. Glad they kept the gearshifter. I like how streamlined the dash area is. Doesnt have to be very fancy and curved or have an obnoxious screen sticking up over the dash. I like the engineering design there. Looks like they kept the volume and tuner selection buttons too. I don't like all touch screen options only. Simple is more ergonomic and intuitive.
@@devn3813 Yes. Also quite possibly the dumbest idea of putting an I4 turbo in a car as heavy as it is. The fact that they'd ask close to $50K USD when it was new, when you could get an older model Audi with a V6T and decent mileage for less and is probably nicer is completely absurd. It's like if you want to have any fun you have to buy the premier brand. Don't get me wrong. VWs can be fun little zippy cars, but they lack the excitement of the older generations. To each their own.
@@Michael-oi5fl an old Audi will be unreliable but I drove 300 mi yesterday for my dad to get a new Arteon for $38,000 and we didn’t get it because it didn’t even seem worth it even for that price. The center area and consol had way less room than his Jetta and it didn’t even seem new :/. Too bad all good sedans are gone now
@@devn3813 It depends. I have an 8 year old Audi and it's still reliable. It's really up to the buyer to do their research when buying a used car. The one that I ended up purchasing had an extensive maintenance record and had all it's recommended inspections done. I also bought from a dealership and not from a private seller though.

Why is it that almost every single other VW at this price point, as well as the Jetta GLI, get the interior that the Golf R should have gotten? And the GLI is cheaper
I had a 2021 SEL Premium R-Line. The interior is nice at first, but gimmicky and full of hard touch plastic. The touch capacitive buttons are irritating to deal with for a daily driver. Topher mentioned for the 2023 they allow you to disable LANE KEEP from turning on everytime you start the vehicle... that is HUGE. That system is a huge annoyance. I traded in for a Genesis G70 3.3TT, which is much more fun of a vehicle. The Arteon is much more practical and has a lot of "cool tech", but underwhelming after the first couple of weeks of ownership. My favorite thing were the headlights and steering wheel, sans the touch controls.
Full-size sedans are a dying breed in general, especially in the US. The usual demographic of buyers who’d be interested have moved on to SUVs. Thus, cars like the Arteon appeal to a niche group of customers. I honestly have no idea what VW thought they’d achieve by selling the Arteon in the US (even as a fan myself). It’s the same reason why Toyota discontinued the Avalon… and are trying to test the waters with a hybrid, lifted sedan with the new Crown.
Those huge rims are over 30lb each. This weight affects handling, acceleration, fuel consumption, thin sidewalls give a rough ride, are easy to damage. I don't understand the obsession with huge wheels these days. There is just nothing positive about it, including the looks in this case.
A used Audi A7 2017-2018 is cheaper than a new Arteon, but is an order of magnitude nicer and smoother. Arteon's interior deteriorates rather quickly in a year (I was shopping for a used one), Audi's stays almost the same in 6. A7 of this gen has super-smooth and bulletproof CREC engine (3.0 TFSI, supercharged, gen 2) which is also a V6, so better sound (yet 30 MPG on a highway). Supercharger ensures very even and instantaneous power delivery. 333 HP in stock, reflash bumps it to +100 HP if you are into it. Chassis feels much more solid, the ride more refined and everything around you in the car just... nicer. Outside it's one of the most drop-dead gorgeous cars on the road, albeit of course not as futuristic-looking as Arteon. At 50K new and 40K mildly used Arteon makes 0 sense.

this 300HP with DSG is the ideal combo they should have started it with- but pricing is still a bit high- love it as a VW fan and cc owner

I have a 21 and LOVE it. I'll be updating to a 23 pretty soon. Had a 22 loaner recently and it's night and day better.

What’s stunning car, could only imagine what would’ve been had they went through with the turbo VR6 in the Arteon R. Would’ve truly made a strong case.
if they did put a VR6 in this car, it wouldn't be the VR6 you want. They would put the 3.6 vr6 out of the passat and atlas. The 3.6 is a great engine, but it doesn't like boost stock.

Look up the prototype Atreon R, they initially planned to have a Turbo VR6 featured in the car but in development they were having issues with their brand emissions portfolio but also the bigger and heavier VR6 counter acted the torque splitter in the rear. They even considered the Inline 5 from audi, but that was a dead end for their performance goals, which is why they opted in for the EA888 instead

dang i didnt know VW updated the powertrain, makes the Arteon a lot more interesting. it now has more power than the A5 sportback. this is honestly a great car now. its expensive but you almost have to say its worth it.

I have owned Audis and Volkswagens continually since 1985. I’ve had SUVs, however, I don’t want another one right now. The Arteon is just the vehicle I’ve been waiting for. I plan to buy an SEL Premium R-Line 4Motion within a few months.
I've been waiting on this one. Really beautiful car, who knows how it will hold up but I'd lease one of the numbers were favorable
I can't wait to get one of these in 6 months. The car is absolutely gorgeous. I was looking at the 2023 SEL R-Line and it comes fully equipped with everything. There is absolutely no other option to add that is necessary. Its like a Hyundai but better.

I need to spend some more time in the GTI, was so turned off by the UI at first that I kind of wrote it off but with some more time in the Golf R I got used to it. Will try to get another one in to test here soon
@@TheTopher$31k, 241hp, Hatchback, very well equipped in base form. The 11th gen Si gets a ton of attention but the GTI is the same price and it’s far easier to find them at MSRP.
the thing about VW is that they put the same engine in various models. They purposely derated the engine for certain models to avoid competition with the higher end. If you have a GTI, you can tune the engine to increase horsepower, as well as swap the turbo to get more performance out of it
Most underrated car goes under the radar for most sedan buyers you rarely see it on the road sadly this segment is dying first the Taurus and Impala then the Avalon then maxima, hopefully VW keeps this gorgeous and add hybrid to lineup

VW is killing it off in the Atlas so unfortunately the Vr6 is no more ;( Too be fair to vw, the VR6 would have never made sense in the Arteon due to emissions and consumption and VW's apprehension to slap a turbo on it really sealed the VR6's fate. Would be cool of they were able to adapt the 3.0t from the Audi's into the Arteon but they will never since it ride on an MQB chassis ;/
My '21 has the ventilated and massage seats (driver's side only for massage). Those options got dropped due to CV-19, supplier issues, but they needed to keep up with production, so they left them out on the newer models.
Heavily discounted one's under 40 can be found now SEL R Line. Hope I will be able to fine a OEM approved tune that puts this at the EU output.

The DSG and 2 liter is available in other vw products. Mechanical parts are same as passat probably. Kinda double edged sword
It's like a hybrid interior mix of the MK7 Jetta, the 7.5 Golf R, and the MK8 - I don't hate it, but wish they would've given it the MK8 virtual cockpit with HUD.
I want to buy this or a golf r or a subaru outback. My biggest complaint with the VWs is the stupid low profile tires. I have a 2015 golf r and popped the left front twice in one week on two different potholes driving in the dark. The thought of spending tens of thousands of dollars on one of the VWs and then immediately having to spend thousands more on new wwheels/tires just grates on me.
There was a lot of road noise in the recording on the highway. Did you find it to be a noisy car or is that a quirk of the recording process?
i test drove one about 4 years ago , the old 280 model ,
in the end a bought the skoda superb 272 sportline plus ,
its a better buy than the arteon and my skoda had the 7 speed
dual clutch which the old arteon did not have which mad it
quicker 0 to 60 mph 5.3 seconds , i sold my bmw 630 gt grand turismo
m sport and bought the skoda , the skoda feel considerable faster
and more responsive compared to the bmw ,in the uk the superb
is a brilliant buy , had 3 skoda octavia vrs before them which are good
but no all wheel drive and they scrabble for grip at the lights ,
and the superb is a big car but its only 80 kg or so more than the octavia,
as am getting old now and the wife want a small car am looking
at the cupra ateca which has the 300 hp in it , i love sleeper cars
and the superb was a perfect car for that , not many cars got the better
of it ..

Actually this is the R version, at least in Europe. In the US, they just use the normal bumpers and call it the R-line

Too bad the Arteon is being phased out to make way for their EVs, but that means when I'm in the market for an used Arteon or S7/RS7, used prices are gonna be sweet since everyone else is going for a new A5/S5 instead. Arteons are already going for less than a new Jetta rn...just gotta get the DSG version.

I want to love this car but it has a very uncertain future. Rumoured to be cut soon. Meaning parts will be a pain to find. I cant even find the build and price section for this car online unless I really dig into the VW website. This is how little effort they put into marketing this car.
I mean from what i’ve heard it sits on the same platform as the A4/A5. Vw also shares the same engines between most all their platforms so while it being discontinued could hurt prices a bit, i think it’ll be manageable.
@@coredaqqer6197 That's not right. The A4/A5 is on the MLB platform which mean the engine is longitudinal. The arteon is on the MQB platform meaning the engine is transverse. Very different dynamics between the two.

Andrew Gus - I just went to the VW website, clicked "builder" , and scrolled through all the models. Arteon was listed about 3/4 of the way down. Or if you click "models" scroll to Arteon and click the model page. It opens and the option to "Build your Arteon" is prominently displayed.
I own this car and the ride is OK. It would have been great if VW was offering air suspesion as an option.. Even with the 18-inch wheels and the adaptive suspension set to most comfortable, I still feel the bumps quite a bit!
How does the audio compare with something like the Acura ELS? 🤔

The ventilated seats are standard on that trim, but most of the time they get deleted due to the chip shortage.

VW is one of the few manufacturers I follow.
Would be nice if VW made the design of this model and specs in a minivan version to compete with Sienna and Odssey.
I don't like that there is no frame around the windows / door post area and I don't need 20" tires.
I also dont care for the hatchback look, but I can see how that would be successful for this particular model and I never cared for those loud obnoxious turn signal tones either. I would find a way to disable that.
I like the placement of the pushbutton start. Thats a more logical spot for it, though I'm old school and still prefer keys. Glad they kept the gearshifter.
I like how streamlined the dash area is. Doesnt have to be very fancy and curved or have an obnoxious screen sticking up over the dash. I like the engineering design there. Looks like they kept the volume and tuner selection buttons too. I don't like all touch screen options only.
Simple is more ergonomic and intuitive.
Nice car, but at the $50k price point it's in a tough segment where there's lots of better options. It's tough to take this over it's competitors.

Quite possibly the most lethargic 300 hp car I've ever seen and I'm a huge VW fan of the R line all the way back to the original MK4 Golf R.
4.6 0-60 is lethargic? In a full size sedan that gets 35 mpg still with awd and can fit 9 suitcases in the rear.
@@devn3813 Yes. Also quite possibly the dumbest idea of putting an I4 turbo in a car as heavy as it is. The fact that they'd ask close to $50K USD when it was new, when you could get an older model Audi with a V6T and decent mileage for less and is probably nicer is completely absurd. It's like if you want to have any fun you have to buy the premier brand. Don't get me wrong. VWs can be fun little zippy cars, but they lack the excitement of the older generations. To each their own.
@@Michael-oi5fl an old Audi will be unreliable but I drove 300 mi yesterday for my dad to get a new Arteon for $38,000 and we didn’t get it because it didn’t even seem worth it even for that price. The center area and consol had way less room than his Jetta and it didn’t even seem new :/. Too bad all good sedans are gone now
@@devn3813 It depends. I have an 8 year old Audi and it's still reliable. It's really up to the buyer to do their research when buying a used car. The one that I ended up purchasing had an extensive maintenance record and had all it's recommended inspections done. I also bought from a dealership and not from a private seller though.

I had a 2021 SEL Premium R-Line. The interior is nice at first, but gimmicky and full of hard touch plastic. The touch capacitive buttons are irritating to deal with for a daily driver. Topher mentioned for the 2023 they allow you to disable LANE KEEP from turning on everytime you start the vehicle... that is HUGE. That system is a huge annoyance. I traded in for a Genesis G70 3.3TT, which is much more fun of a vehicle. The Arteon is much more practical and has a lot of "cool tech", but underwhelming after the first couple of weeks of ownership. My favorite thing were the headlights and steering wheel, sans the touch controls.
Full-size sedans are a dying breed in general, especially in the US. The usual demographic of buyers who’d be interested have moved on to SUVs. Thus, cars like the Arteon appeal to a niche group of customers. I honestly have no idea what VW thought they’d achieve by selling the Arteon in the US (even as a fan myself). It’s the same reason why Toyota discontinued the Avalon… and are trying to test the waters with a hybrid, lifted sedan with the new Crown.

Those huge rims are over 30lb each. This weight affects handling, acceleration, fuel consumption, thin sidewalls give a rough ride, are easy to damage. I don't understand the obsession with huge wheels these days. There is just nothing positive about it, including the looks in this case.

A used Audi A7 2017-2018 is cheaper than a new Arteon, but is an order of magnitude nicer and smoother. Arteon's interior deteriorates rather quickly in a year (I was shopping for a used one), Audi's stays almost the same in 6. A7 of this gen has super-smooth and bulletproof CREC engine (3.0 TFSI, supercharged, gen 2) which is also a V6, so better sound (yet 30 MPG on a highway). Supercharger ensures very even and instantaneous power delivery. 333 HP in stock, reflash bumps it to +100 HP if you are into it. Chassis feels much more solid, the ride more refined and everything around you in the car just... nicer. Outside it's one of the most drop-dead gorgeous cars on the road, albeit of course not as futuristic-looking as Arteon. At 50K new and 40K mildly used Arteon makes 0 sense.
