I'm a bit cautious when backing up photos on the road. I also bring plenty of cards, and I never erase shots in the field. I might erase blurry ones if I review them in the hotel at night. A good day of travel photography is 350-500 shots, and I'm a fastidious backer-upper. While I used to use Samsung T5 or T7 portable, external, SSD drives for daily back-ups on trips, on my recent month-long trip to Australia, I switched to the brand-new, Nextorage portable SSDs, which I find better cuz they're much smaller, much lighter, and perhaps even a bit faster. So far, so good with the Nextorage drives, but the jury is still out. So, in my process, I have two copies of my photos in the field: 1) on my cards that I don't erase, and 2) on a portable, external SSD. Then when I get home, I back up to a larger external hard drive before finally erasing my cards, which leaves me with two copies.
Prior to this system, I never erased my SD cards. I just used those as instant archives and bought more cuz they are so cheap. I can't really afford to do that with CF Express Cards tho.

Thanks Marcus. I'm sure others can learn from your system. It sure beats mine. LOL. Thanks for checking in.
