    I agree with the sister, I was born into Islam and supposedly raised as a Muslim but never quite felt the love of Allah or Islam, reverts have helped me understand Islam sooo much more than the born Muslims and my parents, the Islam I was taught has never brought me closer to Allah but thanks to youtube I'm gaining lots of knowledge and realising who Allah is more and more everyday.

    A convert friend of mine, he is from Texas, told me once that he was very happy that he has become a Muslim, but he always complained that the Muslim community he lived with always wanted him to look, feel and sound more traditional.. and by traditional he and I found out that by traditional, the community members meant "Arab".
    His argument, and he was legit, was that:
    "I'm American, I'm from Texas, I like guns, I like Football, I like hunting, I like thanks giving and the turky.. Yes I'm happy that I embraced this beautiful religion, but I don't want to give up my American identity".

      This issue of deen vs. culture seems complicated but it's actually pretty simple. The key is a taking a practical and balanced approach. In a nutshell, we have to realize that Islam is NOT against any particular culture per se, but rather it is only against those particular aspects that are un-Islamic. With each cultural practice, habit or tradition we should ask... Does this conflict with the authentic Islamic teachings? Would the Prophet (P) approve of it? Etc. Of course this falls into the realm of fiqh and, therefore, differences of opinions will occur. But it behooves us to engage in a reasonable and intelligent discussion so we can move towards a better understanding, as Dr. Lang suggests in this video. Allah knows best.

    • @irmafatmawati8199
      @irmafatmawati8199 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Islam is not Arab. All traditions or culture as long as not against the teaching of Quran and Hadist is (not Arab's culture or traditions) is okay

    • @abbddos
      @abbddos 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@irmafatmawati8199 Thank you very much for your reply. I am actually aware that Islam is not about cultural traditions of some people, Arabs or not. The problem I was talking about, that my friend is still facing, is that there are communities that associate religion with their cultural and traditional practices, not realizing that those practices has nothing to do with religion itself.
      For example, many falsely think that a Muslim should release his beard, wear a turban and so on... while there is nothing in religion against wearing jeans, or a suit, or a cowboy hat, as long as that appearance does not show what religion dictates to be covered.

    • @MoMeGe
      @MoMeGe 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@abbddos As for wearing a turban or any other sartorial tradition, nothing is obligatory or Faridah, as long as it doesn't enter the rather small prohibition circle designed by Islam from Qur'An and Hadith, as for releasing your beard, that is not a "cultural" feature, else, all men wouldn't come with genetic designs that code for a beard.
      لا يمكن عدم ذكر أن إعفاء اللحية مأثورٌ عنه صلى الله عليه وسلم، وأنه كان يهذبها ويأخذ من أطرافها وأعلاها، بما يحسنها، ويعتني بتنظيفها، وغسلها، وتخليلها، وتمشيطها، وتابع الصحابة رضي الله تعالى عنهم ما كان يفعله وما كان يختاره، ومن الأحاديث النبوية الشريفة الصحيحة: «أَحْفُوا الشَّوَارِبَ، وَأَوْفُوا اللِّحَى»، وحديث: «عَشْرٌ مِنَ الْفِطْرَةِ، ومنها: إِعْفَاءُ اللِّحْيَةِ»
      It is mentioned in Imdaadul Fataawa: It is Waajib to keep a beard and it is Haraam to trim to less than a fist- full. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Oppose the Mushrikeen, lengthen the beards and trim the moustache.
      Now, there is a Fiqh question about the nature of this deed, is it Wajib, or Mustahab, etc... And on that, you can ask an acknowledgeable Mufti and he'll answer you, but, of course, clothing etc is not a problem as long as it is not something prohibited (too short shorts haha, etc...)
      And, Allah is most knowing.

      I heard he had issues with the Muslim community for his forward-thinking ideas and books.
      It's sad because the Muslim leadership in the US prefers to maintain the old system which has caused the youth to drift away from the faith.
      In my opinion, a big problem is the influence of Saudi Salafism. It's is a sect that focuses on the exterior, e.g. rafa yadain and mustaches, instead of the interior, e.g. how can I near myself to the Creator. It is a sect that is harsh, preferring to belittle and trip fellow Muslims rather than uplift them, e.g. the fitna of Daniel Haqiqatjou. It's an Islam that teaches "my way or the highway," unappealing to an audience that was taught to think critically and rationally.
      God knows how many of these individuals threatened and insulted him. I pray that he and his family are doing well.

    Al salam alaikum all. As a second generation Muslim who initially came to the US in the 70's with my family, I have seen a sea change and a growth of Islam in America الحمد لله. I remember America when you could hardly even find a book about Islam in the libraries or book stores. However, I have also seen many Muslim immigrants who had come mainly for worldly gain and that , unfortunately, has reflected negatively. Some , of course, had a deep seated understanding of Islam and the faith in Allah and built an infrastructure of masajid that frankly hardly even existed in the U.S. back then. So, this is one great thing that our fathers accomplished for us, on a positive note. But, yes it is upon us now, the second generation, to empower the reverts and converts to become leaders in their own country, America. They most certainly can reach more Americans as this is their country and because as Dr. Jeffrey Lang said. Americans can much better understand American's and their problems that face them and the immigrant Muslims in American societies. We must work together and allow space for the reverting men and especially the women to take up leadership positions in our Masajid. Middle-Easterners or immigrants should provide them the support to carry it through because ,yes, many of those immigrants do go back just as we did with my family. But, seeing that these social problems were worldwide, I decided to bring my own family to the U.S. May Allah reward the true Muslim's efforts. I do agree with Dr. Jeffrey Lang and sister Ameena and the panelists across America that much work still needs to be done. Yes, that would mostly entail a self-reflection on our current leaders that we have today and we must confront them and take a stand to regect their shortcomings , point them out to them and do our best to make a difference. I'm dorry to say this , but we have a bunch of boughtband paid for leaders. Wink wink. We must correct our own shortcomings first, though, by the way. The Muslm world had been attacked and is still being attacked from within and without. But , don't despair my Muslim brothers and sisters. Allah has a plan for these evil souls. Every dog has it's day. Yes, we must begin with ourselves first and steer away from the spying , gossip, and divisions that have been imposed upon us by our enemies and those who follow them. We must not allow ourselves to fall victims into the division traps which they have created for us an entire century ago as they trynto pit us against each other. We need to wake up and wise up. The prophet Muhammad (SAAWS) implied that whomever of you does something, that he/she should perfect it. And that is precisely what we need to do. We can begin with perfecting our own Isalm. Today, in America and across the globe we must also stand together as one body. l renounced the sunni-shia titles and youbshould too. We must stop being divided, and take the initiative to unite this Umma as one ummah because, excuse me, as far as I understood , Prophet Muhammad did not come with either sunna or shia or any other sect or group. He just brought Islam; so as you can see,
    we've had previous homework to do from our great grandfathers homework that never got done. Prophet Mohammed (SAAWS) brought us all one Islamic ummah. Do any of you have anything else to say about that? Yeah, I didn't think so. That's how it should be one ummah. Therefore, as soon as we all can begin to rid yourselves of these titles , we might hope to improve our plight and say that we have taken a step towards reforming ourselves and reviving this ummah as it was meant to be only one single united ummah.
    و السلام عليكم و رحمة الله و بركاته

    This talk was given in 2011, and its 2019 today. We don't have sister Amina with us today. May Allah raise her ranks and make her talks, and her dawa a means of sadaqa jariah, ameen. Jeffrey Lang's views on our masjid continue to be relevant in 2019. Masjids still have those same issues. Communities still congregate together ostracizing other ethnicities. But there have been a few amazing scholars that are in US that are actually taking this new generation of Muslims forward. Imams such Sheikh Omar Sulaiman, Shiekh Nasir Jangda, Imam Suhaib Webb, Mufti Hussain Kamani, Sheikh Hamza Yousuf, Sheikh Yasir Birjas to name a few. The internet too, has become a great source of learning and knowledge. More than just the masjids, each Muslim must see himself/herself as a propogator of this deen, and how we behave as Muslims plays a vital role to help bring and keep our brothers and sisters in the fold of Islam.

I should be patient with them and help my sisters instead running, I should show them how I wanted to be treated. there is no way I gonna drift off from allah cos of ignorent who is weak like me, I just want to apologise to my beloved ummah I'm sorry I failed you and insha allah as my brother said I gonna follow his advice for good. #Qur'an and #sunnah is my law.

    "Go away, you are just a convert!"
    sadly, many of those that hold such religious positions are in reality people who didn't succeed in school or universities so they settle for religious studies and become Imams or clerk. And they don't read outside the religious texts. So, many are ignorant and have inferiority complex when it comes to other questions asked by physicians or engineers. So stay away from asking such people since they don't represent Islam. Just research the answer and read. But really keep it simple. Islam is simple. The core message is like all religions, to be a good decent human being and be merciful to other God's creatures.

    "You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with Allah ; and you will find the nearest of them in affection to the believers those who say, "We are Christians." That is because among them are priests and monks and because they are not arrogant."- 5:82

    Islam in my mind is such an amazingly intellectual religion where emphasis is on the pen, on knowledge and learning. This is outlined beautifully in the Quran as you know. I am thankful to you from the depths of my heart for the work you are doing. It saddens me that today’s (so called) Imams and Scholars are so distant or even deluded from what Muslim youth faces today.
    Allah will protect His message (and certainly needs no help) but the sad truth is that we are losing Muslim intellectual thought which is so beautiful, so artful, yet amazingly intellectual and scientific.
    You are a light in this darkness. Thank you once again for your work. May Allah guide you and reward you, in this world and the hereafter.

    When I became a Muslim I was astounded at the amount of segregation of race, color, nationalists, groups, social status and cultural ignorance that exists in our community.
    It is soooooo fustrating to know that Islam teaches the contrary, Islam is perfect and yet we don't follow the truth that is Islam.
    "you are only a convert" I hated hearing that!
    Alhumdullila I am a proud Muslim my deen is the only truth that is Islam..

    Religious policing must go. We are individually accountable to God for our deeds rather than collectively accountable. The Quran is the best guide. Nobody has a right to judge another except God and he or she who judges people without really knowing them are indirectly performing shrik. It is said that one to takes shahada becomes a pure person irrespective of his past, therefore they deserve utmost respect from community. A tremendous change has to be initiated within the community.

    Subhanallah, this was very informational. Especially for me being a born Muslim of Indian descent, we're aware, but forget of our brothers and sisters soon after they revert. We forget their pain, and we're going to answer for that. Brother Jeffrey Lang doesn't have to apologize for anything, instead he has the right to demand it from us.

    One of the best lectures given by a true Muslim with true commitment to Islam. Let me tell you brother that here in Spain the mosque on friday and everyday is filled with Brothers and sisters in the same hall, that is because of the true way they follow Islam. I know this because I have seen Islam in most countries , Afghanistan in the 60s during the Soviets, during Taliban, during the Americans, and little has changed in the mindset of the poor and the uneducated, they follow but know little. Now when these people follow their customs brought down the ages, they have difficulty to accept the truth. Now let this not worry you brother, as you are not alone. i have seen Islam in Germany , UK , and find that the majority of mosques generally run by different ethnic backgrounds, Afghan, Turkish, and Arab find the same problem, when a sister wishes to press participation due to some of the general people that run these places are from originally traditionally run mosques from their country, which never had women coming to them. Please do not see this as a stamp of approval, quite the contrary ... I am from Afghan background and have read and understood the Glorious Quran like you have, and there is nowhere room for this type of behavior. You are total and entirely correct and I can write and write about this subject and hope to do so in the near future. I hope that the sisters that have converted to Islam do not take the actions of these bigots that do not allow them in Mosques, it is indeed a sin to refuse a believer to enter the house of Allah for prayer. I am not a convert, and I can tell you read the Quran and leave it at that, it is enough to follow.

      Yaqub Naqiyev - I have studied and asked many questions. I am now absolutely convinced Muhammed was NEVER a prophet of God but was a confused and ignorant man, who never understood the true message of the Bible. He says many wrong things in the Quran that cannot be from God but can only come from Satan. For example, he curses Christians for saying "Christ is the Son of God," in Quran 9:30.

      1. Its a verse from a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
      2. It doesnt say strong men, it says men (people) who courageously suffer because of honesty, their only crime.
      3. Men means people, men and women. Its just how we usually use language, not just here but in innumerous texts.
      4. please please dont view everything from the lens of gender discrimination.

    - Mr. Lang I respect your research. Communication is an issue in our ummah. Mosque admins are NOT doing their job. We have a lot problems and solutions were presented by early scholars, changing and revising their work will be wrong. What we need to change is our outlook to the solutions they presented. We need to live in the present but study our history.

    Those problems mentioned in this lecture are not taking place only in America, but all around Muslim world. Many people think that Muslim women in Muslim countries such as Middle-east are accepting the injustice they are facing from their culture, but it's not true. It's just too difficult for them to fight while they are oppressed by their own families.

  • @mkrbu50
    @mkrbu50 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    To much of my surprise, all the points that Dr. Lang is raising about Muslim Americans are relevant throughout the world, and Islamic countries aren't an exception.
    There is a huge divide between young, educated people highly motivated successful people and the religious establishment, just as Dr Lang is pointing out.
    I live in Saudi Arabia and I'm in my late 30s. I'm experiencing this divide first hand. Older generations can't comprehend what's going on among younger generations and how fast they're drifting away, and I don't mean it in a bad way. I'm just stating a fact. I'm a parent of a teenager, a kid and a toddler. This topic is touching exactly the pain point.

    Be a Muslim for yourself and for your eternal life so many Muslims are not and should not be your reason for leaving any religion . Do the right thing for yourself and if you need guidance there are plenty of good Muslims around. We have lots of Muslims I personally wouldn't deal with just like many other people from other religions. Anybody that gets offended from this can keep it to himself.

    I commend you for your caution. But in this case it may be excessive. In the beginning and end of the talk he says "As-salamu Alaikum". He says during the talk "I've been Muslim for 20 years" (paraphrase). Jeffrey Lang is a known Muslim who has written three books, one about his conversion to Islam called "Struggling to Surrender". What's wrong with his dress?? Okay... you got me on the beard part, but should that alone cause you to dismiss the tremendous wisdom he is imparting?

      A submitter to God’s will is in the heart and soul. Too many Muslims lack sincerity in their faith, that alone is worth beyond that of having beards, going mosque or praying five times a day. Why do any of that when they lack the true sincerity that God wants of us?!

    I think this is one of the problems in a secular state...this happens also in my country in Indonesia...although the number of people affiliated with Islam is the majority, but the quality of Islamisation of the community has faded. So I think, indeed present conditions we must work harder to restore the true Islam in the lives of their communities.
