  • First video in the Thunderbike Race bike Prep series, this will follow the preparation of a Bemsee Thunderbike Sport eligible Ducati race bike
    In this video the process will start with the strip down of a donor 748E engine that will provide the parts necessary to build up a complete race engine from spare cases and some 748SP parts
    This strip down takes you through how I strip down the engine from start to finish
    Subsequent videos will cover the modification, rebuild and set-up of the engine before I move onto more videos detailing me building and preparing the race bike itself before taking it to the track
    Enjoy and if you are interested in following the build please hit like and subscribe :)
    Filmed on Gopro Hero 4 camera's #thunderbikebuild #racebuild #ducati

    Hi there. I'm at loss for words atm. I own a 748 and brought it away for a full service (50k km). Got a call from the mechanic this afternoon. It needs a lot of work, gonna cost 1400€. Then another call, your rockerarms are flaking. service is 1800€ and I got the grim message about how this engine probably gonna need a full rebuild at 60k km. So I pay almost 2000€ for a bike I can ride for another 10k before a huge expensive rebuild that costs more than the bike is worth in the first place....
    I love this bike, I wanted one since I was a 12 year old lad and my dad took me to the roadraces and I heard the Ducati's roar by. Nothing beats the looks, sounds or handling of an old Ducati. But I cant do this anymore. i'm spend. I'm not poor but all this money is wasted, almost 5/6k in repairs/ maintenance in 3 years. All money i'd rather spend doing trackdays on a bloody Honda cbr because "don't you dare taking an italian sportsbike near a track....."
    I dont really know why i'm talking to you for. I just dont know what to do anymore. I can do some odd maintenance myself. change the brakes/ tires/ chain/ fluids. But a belt change/ valve job, Let alone a full rebuild. It feels so daunting. What are my options?

      @DesmoWerx  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi. I feel your pain. 50000KM is a good life for the early rocker arms, but if they are flaking they will need replacing.
      The service cost from dealers is always eye watering for Ducati's and not sure why.
      Personally I would source a second hand engine and swap it out if you want to keep the bike and avoid the rebuild cost, you could then make a decision on what to do with the old engine.
      The rebuilds are not that difficult to undertake on these engines if you know your way around spanners and can get access to some of the special tools.
      Oh and I would always track my Ducati's, its what they are built for 😎

    Thanks for your videos! I have a 999 with a engine whine that rises and falls with RPM. Comments from forums point to a main bearing failure. So the bike is off the road and I'm deciding whether to replace or sell the bike. Your videos are gold!

    Your Videos are brilliant, like a lot of other people, I have some spare time and I have a ducati 748R, I have already took the engine out and was going to send it off to have it rebuilt, now I have found your channel, I feel confident enough to try iy myself! One question I ask, which would really help me get started, the little wooden engine stand you have made, is is possible to give me the dimensions, so I can star the same?Very much appreciated,Simon.

    Great work! Love your videos. I´m about to change the gearbox of my 996 engine and I´m wondering if the procedure is similar to the 748 engine? It´s my first time ever to disassemble an entire motor.

    Is it customary to replace the head bolts on re-assembly? My 748 SPS has some 200psi compression (cold), which is higher than standard as far as I know, and just wondered what the normal methods are for increasing compression and if that effects the type of head bolts Ducati uses?

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have not used any other type of head bolts and nuts as the Ducati ones have not been an issue for me. Your compression reading is high.
      Compression can easily be increased by using thinner cylinder base gaskets or if you are on the earlier head gasket which is a 1mm thick gasket you could use a thinner later one.
      If you did this work you would need to check squish and Valve to Piston clearance.

    • @tim2muntu954
      @tim2muntu954 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think a past owner of my 748SPS has used a thinner head gasket - with that high compression she's hard to start. If I do tear her down, could I re-use the headbolts? (or do they stretch in the original tightening?). Your channel is so helpful to us lovers of these desmoquatros.

    Hey mate. I wonder if you would know why my lights stay on when I switch my ignition off. I fitted an led rear race light and switch on the clip on. I wired it into the original loom and it was working fine. After a couple of races I noticed the light was still on even though everything was off. I removed all the fuses and relay but it made no difference. I'm a bit puzzled my only guess is the original ignition switch is faulty. I was going to fit a toggle switch when I had time. The ignition relay seems okay and the bike starts as it should. I've checked the harness and it seems ok Any ideas.

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, electrics are a hard one to call unless you have direct access to it. The circuit may have shorted somewhere causing the light to remain powered, it would be a case of tracing the circuit and testing in various points to find the short.

    When removing the generator cover, does the engine oil need to be drained?

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the bike is going to remain upright then yes. You can lean it right over if doing a quick repair but better to do it on stands and not risk damage to the bike.

    smahed the subscribe button can you explain the 2/3 phase

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its the type of generator, technically its single phase and three phase - the early systems have a single phase generator and they are more unreliable but lighter on the engine. You can tell the difference between the two as the single phase engine has two wires coming from it and the rotor magnet is separate to the flywheel so can be separated from it (save rotating mass on the engine), on the 3 phase engine there are three wires coming from the cover and the rotor is part of the flywheel assembly so you have to retain all of it (you can get a lightweight flywheel if you want one though) Hope that helps :)
