I think the wraith is basically a metaphor for the one's feeling when being in toxic and hostile enviornments. For example, Nancy being in a controlling relationship with Gil, you feel a sense of selfdoubt/worth and your blinded to the other's fault.

Noticed how the Wraith covered her eyes when he was being angry? It was keeping her from seeing Gil for what he is, hence she went for him instead of Tamure.
