  • I can no longer avoid the pile of metal I need to sand and repaint. Boring. Still has to be done. I managed to get through it and start the reinstall with the help of a few heli coils. I can’t wait to get this back in the car.
    For great videos on removing Corvair engines and rebuilding them please see the following. These channels really gave me the encouragement to tackle this project I have been putting off for a long time.

    Hello again. I powered through all 11 episodes after commenting on an earlier episode. I figured I'd condense my comments on this latest video.
    Regarding the disassembly of the trans/diff from the engine: The small diameter shaft inside the larger diameter shaft is attached to the front pump, tri-lobed drive washer. The washer is held in place with thin snap rings on either side. That is why you couldn't get it out. It comes out only by removing the front pump cover. Be careful because the snap rings can be popped off, the shaft move and not turn the drive washer properly effectively stripping it. A light push/pull on the small shaft should have minimal play and likely insures the snap rings are still intact. Take care to reinstall. It is best to have the convertor on the trans/diff, not the flex plate like you disassembled it.
    Regarding the push rod tube replacement: You did your homework knowing to put the tube in first then put the O-ring on. Likewise with the guide plate "U" showing upward (A+).
    Regarding the valve lash: I have not seen that method used before. In theory I can see how it likely works so hoping for the best. If you hear clattering (too loose) or backfiring through the carb (too tight) you will need to follow a more orthodox method.
    It seems you are moving along. Are you on the Corvair Forum or the Corvair Center Forum? Lots of knowledge there. I've been working on/modifying cars for 50 years but the Corvair has its uniqueness and there were a LOT of things to be gleaned from those forums.

      Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your expertise is appreciated. You comments explain a lot of previous unknowns. I am part of the Corvair forums and find them extremely helpful. You will be glad to hear that I have reinstalled the diff and trans to the engine and did so with the converter attached to the diff. Though it took me a few minutes to get the converter all the way seated, once done the attachment to the engine was really easy. I am really close now to putting it back in the car. Thank you for your guidance and support.
