One good thing about finishing this series is that it made me want to indulge in theoretical physics again. I atleast need to get to a level where I can comprehend most of the concepts mentioned in the books. Great review by the way
Thank you for your comment, Gwen, and for watching! I won't say that reading the other two isn't worth it, but your perspective on the first book would completely change. That is for dang sure
Just finished the whole trilogy and while there some points i agree with, i still think the other two are definitely worth a read. Some incredible concepts and amazing moments that go beyond the first books boundaries, even though the first is still my favourite
I will continue to watch the tv show but I doubt I will read this trilogy. I think you should do a book review video for every sci fi or fantasy book you read. 😀
Hi Alex! What a brilliant review, thank you!! I have yet to finish The Dark Forest…and probably never will which means I’ll never read Death’s End - even though the trilogy is staring at me at this very moment!! 🫣 Best wishes to you, always!! 💛
Thank you so much! Happy to see you hear again! I don't blame you if you don't finish it and you might be happier overall stopping where you have. Would giving away the books make you feel better? 🤣 wouldn't judge
Astute comments on the importance of the translation. I agree that this volume started well, much better than v2, but then got much slower. Characters were as you describe: extremely shallow as expected. Sad but true. Overall, a spot-on analysis. Even the comparison to N. Stephenson is v apt. I *would* recommend Flatland. It really helped me understand multidimensional ideas ever after. It makes books like TBP much easier. For alternate solutions to similar problems facing different societies I might recommend Children of Time. V inventive. V well done. Thank you.
Thank you for the thoughtful comments as always, @wbebbs. I do really need to read The Children of Time. I am embroiled in too many series at the moment but I hope to remedy that soon! Finishing this book ticks a big check box thankfully! Hope you have a beautiful rest of your day!
Children of Time is one of my all-time favorite books, pulled in right from the beginning!! I was unable to get into book 2, Children of Ruin, even after multiple attempts. 😅
#CompletmentSandwich. "This part of the book made my brain feel like the inside of grilled cheese." Always wondered why I subscribed ( besides the expletives) and now I know.
There was a LOT to take in with each book all at once, so I completely understand that feeling. Thank you very much for watching and taking the time to comment.
I also think the translation of Dark Forest somewhat contributed to liking it less than the other two. But I am so happy our thoughts on the series and the book individually are pretty similar!! Yeah the ending was a RIDE. SPOILERS BUT Yeah the part where our female MC and the guy finally met and then it all got RIPPED away was bad. Why couldn't we just have the 3/4 of them happy on a planet for life *cries* I like one of the futures was where male and female was basically indistinquishable and our mc couldn't tell if she was talking to a guy or a girl for a good chunk. I quite liked and was surprised that that sort of content passes censorship in China, but I really liked it nontheless! Also for this book, maybe it was just me, but didn't the two female characters read somewhat sapphic/romantic? I dunno but they spent a lot of time together, the female main lead relied on her friend/secretary, and at the end is basically like "here is my will if I die, I'm leaving my company and everything to you" it all read beautifully romantic to me. While obviously queer content is heavily censored and cut in China, subtle relationships like the one I felt between them two can get through censorship.
Hey Alex, glad you enjoyed the review! I didn't pick up on a Sapphic relationship personally but that's probably because I thought Cheng Xin was always in her own head or thinking out Yu Taiming and AA was written as a hopeless flirt with men. I thought that they were just really good friends, but there's nothing wrong with reading more into that if you felt there was something!
What would be a good sci fi novel that you would say has really good characters? I’m kind of new to reading and I really liked this 3 part series, but I could see what you’re saying about the characters.
So sorry it took me so long to get back! I would highly recommend you read either Recurssion by Blake Crouch, The Vanished Birds by Simom Jimenez, or The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. Highly recommend them all! Another great book is A Memory Called Empire!

Aw, thanks so much! And that's absolutely fantastic that this series inspired you in such a way. Love that and thanks for watching!
I also loved Three Body Problem, but thanks to your reviews will not endure what sounds like the pain of the other two! 😊

@@alexfrankfiction I have way too many other books I am looking forward to reading! 😊
The dark forest was a solid 4/5 for me personally, i really enjoyed it
@jonatangomez3985 that's awesome that you enjoyed it so much!

As long as I have enough to say for a video, I can promise you that is the plan 😄 Thanks for watching, Heidi! Glad you enjoy the show

@@alexfrankfiction Is it terrible if I “can’t” give my books away (even if I haven’t read them)? Somewhere in my mind, they’re still in my TBR! 😉
@Multiverse10X not terrible at all! I respect that

@Multiverse10X oh dang, really!? That's a shame! Glad you loved the first story at least!

Good to know I have an audience who likes cheesy jokes and sandwich based similies.
Interesting review. As I read the books I realised I will have to read them again. Which is OK.
