Today we are restoring 2 Barnes #5 Velocipede Machining Lathes With Hand Tool Rescue. I drove up to his shop so the two fo us could work on them side by side. This is a screw cutting machining lathe from the turn of the last century. All foot-powered though many were changed to run with a motor during and after WWII.

This set of videos is going to be super useful for someone out there who has to build a lathe from scratch. There's plenty made from bicycle parts, but knowing how the old _original_ pedal lathe was built with the limitations of nearly 150 years ago is a treasure - museums won't usually let you tear them apart!
So true. There is a local museum here that has a belt system. I keep wanting to do a video there.

Thanks for the video, I was trying to work out how to disassemble my carriage feed as it is rattling so useful to see how it is done. One point is that the ways you scraped aren’t actually the ones it runs on, the bearing surfaces are the dovetail groves on each side.
Thanks. You are correct on the raceways. The reason I was surfacing the top is that there were several nicks. When you release the pressure they still slide on the top surface and if there are any nicks that will make it much more difficult to slide them.

Great work! I could do with pedals and a stand like that for my 1896 Singer flying shuttle sewing machine! All the proper stands for them tend to have been turned into coffee tables! The seat on your lathe reminds me of a 1940s tractor seat - hopefully you don't get bounced around as much! But great work on the restoration, and it will be so interesting to watch you making parts on it! Thank you! You're always "pedalling" us something on this channel HA HA !

yup it is an Amish foundry out in NC Cattail Foundry they have a lot of the original pasterns and do amazing work!

Those things holding the information plate on that you called nails, they are "drive screws" and you can still get them from various suppliers.
that is what surprised me. these are not drive screws. They are actually nails. The ones on his lathe were fine screws. Mine did not have the fluting and the sides and came to a square point just like a nail.

Always nice to see Eric in someone else's video. That lathe looks a lot like one I've seen Roy Underhill use, right down to the backpedalling. Do you know if it's the same model?
it is close. the one he showed was a #4 this is a #5 the main difference is the #5 is longer and has a deeper working space.
The Stanley no 1 is missing from his wall, did you get at new plane😏

i got one just like that...mine says made 1887 and has a motor powering it now..i dont have that little brass piece and nut on the cross slide
like you do..i just have a nut on both sides of the rest to turn it...and just found out your cross slide was optional that you have..it interfered with the cross slide handle and has a removable handle thats why

they did sell them with wood working attachments but those are harder to find. I will do a bit of both on this one.

Do we know why the treadle has three pedals?
so you can move and sit at the other end if you are working on something long. the #16 could come with up to 6 pedals so you could sit any-ware along the beam. also you could hire someone to sit on the other side and pedal for you.

LOL the #16 was long enough so you could put someone on the other side and pedal it. I might have to give it a try.
What oils did you use for the spindles and the ways?
I just used three in one.
@ 10:15 you said "the tool rest. The slider. Someone will comment what that is" is cross slide what you were looking for? The compound slide is the one on the cross slide that swivels.
How difficult is it to cut soft metals like brass? I can't imagine having to pedal through steel! I guess you just have to take light cuts?
We're these treadle intended for use on raw stock, or more for finishing repairs to a mostly formed part?
Anyway, really cool! I wasn't aware a treadle metal lathe was even a thing!
Steel is no problem at all. There is a surprising amount of power. It goes a bit slower but is fully functional. I will be doing some thread cutting soon with it. There was a time when these were the standard in metal working.
That looks awesome. I thought it looked like a lot of fast pedalling until I realised I had the video on 1.5x speed by mistake. Looking forward to seeing what you can do with this, especially the wood stuff. I struggle to do two things at once, so would end up hurting myself trying to use something like this. I do have a hand-cranked grinder, but I'm not that great with it. I wonder if you could attach a grinding wheel to this in some fashion. That'd be cool.
that is something I am planning to do. I have a grinder I want to power this seems like a good power source.

LOL there are hundreds of these. I usually see 2-4 a year at different sales and meets. they usually go for $600-$2500 depending on condition.

We didn't have much manufacturing in my area (north central MS) till about the 1990s so I'll have to cast a wide net and see what comes up.
Why didn't you install the lathe the other way and mount the seat from the other side so that you could pedal the easier way instead of in reverse
Because the spendal would be rotating away from you. The tools have to be on this side to work. It looks odd but to be honest after 2-3 seconds you don't notice the difference in use.
Has anyone come across pedal-powered milling machines?
Are you talking about a sharper, or a lumber mill?
