In my opinion you both are setting great examples for your kids, in planning , hard work, determination, and sharing skills that will stay with them for the rest of their lives, showing them the importance of stewardship of the the land you are all working hard to improve, you both are so great at sharing tasks that will give them their own vision and skills that are priceless. Great video thanks for sharing!!👍👍👍👍

I think these are the first sheep I’ve ever seen without their tails docked. They are beautiful!!! I am also a fan of @Sandi Brock, who raises sheep in Canada and @The Sheep Game, who raises sheep in Scotland. I enjoy watching sheep - birthing, being sheared, and especially the babies jumping around on their mamas when mama is lying down. While Sandi raises her sheep in a barn (except for just a few retirees that have been put out to pasture), the sheep in Scotland are mostly kept in the pastures. Thanks for sharing your life with us, who can only dream. Your videos are always enjoyable and I look forward to each and every one!!

Having that much grass is a GOOD problem to have! Get a lot more sheep and some cows and more premier one netting. soon you will convert sunshine into meat in the freezer. We use that netting that is 164 feet long and put 2 of them 164 feet apart parallel to each other and use 3 more nets perpendicular to leap frog paddocks one pole at a time making 11ftx164ft paddocks moving them once a day. works great.

The Club Cadet push string trimmer with .155 line is a good unit to have. That Bobcat ToolCat would be a nice property maintenance vehicle if you can find one used. The Mecalac is a nice all in one unit. If you could mulch up your mesquite trimmings into woodchips and put them along the fence line would keep down the weeds.

I wonder if your goat heads are the same ones we had up in the Texas panhandle when I was a kid. They'd flat a bike tire or even a car tire if it didn't have tread left. An annual Summer right of passage was being able to run through them about two weeks into Summer when we had put off all shoes. There was a peculiar flat footed gait that was required, but all of us could do it once our feet toughened up. Since we ran everywhere it was a useful skill to have.

I still think you need a riding lawnmower, of course that wouldn't help along the fence lines. It's amazing how fast it all grows when you get 4 inches of rain all at the same time. Just add water. LOL
I have some TH-cam friends in Panama that have some goats and what they do is stake them out in the middle of where they want them to eat the grass and all they do is give them water. If they don't eat the grass they don't eat. You might want to watch their videos and you might get some ideas. Their TH-cam channel is;the nomadic movement. They are a young couple and the people around them. She had a baby earlier this year so they are learning about how to have a little one to take care for.

Not only is amaranth triggering to allergies, it also has very painfully spikey seed heads. They are sometimes called sand spurs. Amaranth, goat heads, and nightshade are better off far from human dwellings. They have their place in the ecosystem, but that place isn't in daily contact!

Several different plants from different families can be called pigweed. Amaranthus retroflexus is known to be poisonous to livestock (perhaps including chickens, the article referencing pigweed failed to give the Latin name)
You need to be sure of the type you have, then consult with a vet as to what parts may or may not ge edible.
At least two types of pigweed are edible to humans. Some edible pigweed can cause calcium to not be absorbed, and this can only be eaten occasionally.
Except for the tails and that yours are taller, your sheep look like mine,

@@carolmyers6678 I agree that they are noisy. That’s there way of alerting to threats. Still if all they do is alert it’s obtrusive. They are really good at insect control though. The best ecologically really. Because of the noise we kept them in the fields well away from the house. They are really good at staying in the vicinity of there roost as long as they’re conditioned to it.

Get some 4-foot lawn managers - "borrow" some horses. They will munch the grass down short, they can be tethered if they're used to that, they should be easy to come by in your part of the world. They're much better with a companion or two, so more grass gets trimmed. In all the years we had horses, we never had lawn mowers or trimmers. They produce more fertiliser than the goats and sheep will and they can be delightful companions to humans.

I'm curious why you don't get a riding mower? The kids could take turns on it. Mine is rechargeable, run time, about 2 1/2 hours, but doesn't have power steering. (Ryobi) I would have bought gas powered, but I'm not good at keeping gas powered things running lol. And I don't have near as much land as you. I don't know if your grass grows year round, but if not, maybe rent a good mower during certain months?

First time watcher and subscriber!! Cool stuff!! Goats 🐐 are finicky aren't they? What about a sickle bar mower or attachment (I gotta keep watching to see what implements you have). But they're perfect for fence line and ditches. They don't require high HP to run, like 15hp or less. You could probably even Redneck-engineer a long hedge trimmer (electric , like Ryobi) and run it along the fence line and underneath.

Question will u have to shear the sheep? Understandable with keeping the pen cleared of weeds do to their wool and getting intwined in their wool and getting matted up. Looks like work.

Not sure how long they'll be here, we're just borrowing them.

I noticed, and maybe a “duh “moment - but did you not use shade sails all this summer? Are they not worth the trouble? Anyway working your way to NFL chief groundskeeper

Good question, no with the winds and monsoons we didn't want to have to deal with putting them up and taking them back down again constantly. Those posts are all getting removed very soon anyway ;)

I watched Justin Rhodes permaculture channel use a flame torch on the weeds and they were gone for the year and grow back slowly. This might work for you. Sheep or goats are a great idea.

The only downfall to torching them is it doesn’t get rid of the roots. Ashley, Jonathan and the kids were pulling them out by the roots. But I hear ya, less stress on the back.

what about using the pulled amaranth at the base o fthe trees as mulch instead of burning? does the act of pulling up and looseninfg the soil not invite a new generation of amaranth?

    • @TinyShinyHome
      @TinyShinyHome  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Putting thousands of amaranth seeds at the base of our trees is definitely not the way to go.

@@TinyShinyHome Most amaranths want sun to germinate.
I do come at this with a bias- I am presently in Portugal, and actively raising a large veggie garden, and can only see damage to soil, atmosphere, etc in burning debris. In areas that are acidic and already loaded in organics can fire bring on benefits. The story of the Sahara and now the Mediterranean is a sad story in the abuse of fire.
      Beautiful place and family.

If you guys ever want to clean up a skull or just a bone put it on your anthill for a week then some beauty quality peroxide for three or four days. Comes out really white.
