well first we use it in patients who come to ER and it is impossible to find a vein after several attempts either due to thin body habitus or collapsed veins due to severe bleeding. Why not in the Manubrium cause it is safer in the tibia or humerus and also if it is done on the Manubrium that might interfere with CPR where it is needed sometimes in Trauma patients who have Circulatroy failure. You are aiming for bone Marrow proximal tibia is thicker, while the manubrium is thinner also chance of cracking. They use the commonly for military wounded, when they have lost so much blood they can not locate a vein.
Question: does the 2% lidocaine have to be the cardiac aka preservative free lidocaine? This is what I've been told at both conferences and at EZ-IO demonstrations but I have yet,to find any reason why the 2% subcutaneous use lidocaine is inappropriate. Thanks!
The only reason I can think of at the moment is to make sure you are not accidentally infusing 2% lidocaine with epinephrine. I'll get back to you if I find any other reasons. -Jess
