Brian often does the arm thing when he's playing guitar. It's just a thing he does. It's not a thing he does for Freddie. The lyrics they used are part of some Queen songs. And the champagne glass on the piano was for Freddie. Beautiful song. I always get emotional watching this video.
Brian has said that the roaming camera represents a “visitor” walking amongst them. It is a beautiful tribute & it’s always amazing to contemplate how strong Freddie’s spirit lives on.
A bit of collected trivia about this song 'They're only flyin' too close to the sun' The planet closest to the sun is Mercury As mentioned before, ' A hand above the water. An angel reachin' for the sky' Is a reference to Freddie's statue at Montreux, Switzerland, overlooking Lake Geneva Many of the lyrics make reference to other Queen songs 'And everywhere the brokenhearted. On every lonely avenue' references Under Pressure: which was almost titled ‘People on Streets'. 'Another tricky situation' taken from Its a Hard Life. 'This is a tricky situation' 'And now the party must be over' references My Melancholy Blues: ‘Another Party’s over.’ Also, Freddy loved giving parties, including dinner parties: 'And so we grace another table And raise our glasses one more time'.
So perfectly beautiful! The illustration is of Icarus from Greek mythology. I liked that lyrical reference-"their only flying too close to the sun." Brian is such an underrated singer. This song truly showed that Freddie was really like a brother to them, not just their frontman. The looks on their faces, in their voices and in every note their sorrow is clear and were doing all they can to keep it together and not break down crying, (not that I'd blame them if they did). I thought the champagne glass homage to Freddie was a really sweet, nice touch. Specifically, for your dad's Information, earlier this year, Brian May shared on instagram and twitter that he and his wife went on pilgrimage to Zanzibar, where Freddie was born to retrace his childhood steps and see his childhood house, his old school and the hospital where Freddie and his sister were born. Alongside this song recording, John Deacon also participated in a Queen collaboration with Bejart- Ballet for life before calling it quits.
A fantastic tribute! I would say the greatest love song of all time! And I will never stop thinking about what Queen could have done the last 33 years if Freddie was still alive!
Last video Deacon played as a member of Queen. The cups on the piano is Freddie & the wine glass at the end is for Freddie. It’s very said for me to hear it. 😢Please do Rogers tribute to Fred Old Friends it’s still considered a Queen song. Thanks 👑
So beautiful. I literally tear up every time I watch it, but I can't not watch it. If you know queen songs, there are several lines in this song straight out of other Queen songs. Thanks so much.
In one sense, life does go on without those who have gone before us. But, in our hearts and minds we carry them with us through the rest of our lives. Love Never Dies no matter the kind of love it is. So in another sense life goes on with them too.
Oh no, this song makes me cry to this day, i still get chills when i remember the day the news came on and announced Freddie's death. ;-; rock on, you damn legend!
Thanks a lot for the video and the reaction!!!It’s so nice to see both of you, sharing your vision and opinion about your subject of analysis!! About the song... Sorry, but I’m only think about Freddie... because this song was written, primarily, for him... to him!! 💔💔💔💔 It is a song written with a deep cry of sadness and painful acceptance of the inevitable. Old friends is a really good song to listen to also when is the next live stream? I also feel like when Brian sings a hand above the water I always think of Freddie's statue
Omg I cry my heart and eye out everytime I hear this. It so tuchi....ohh and see the guys, poor guys. The last thing Deacy does was on a tribut-concert in -97. After the concert he said to Brian and Roger, « I can not do this any longer, Queen is over withouth Freddie»......incredible sad
Brian wrote the song a while before it was released, left in a drawer but decided to send to the others when he felt ready, fantastic tribute and the glass of Champagne at the end was for Freddie. Icarus for the cover art was great too
Thank yo sooooo much. I requested it knowing you guys would like it. For more insite, there is a short video by Roger and Brian on the making of this video. It's a much watch. You could do a reaction on too, up to you tho. AGAIN, THANKS. WHERE'S THE TISSUE?
Queen did a tribute to John Lennon on the Hot Space album called Life is Real (Song for Lennon). Also, the first verse of Put Out the Fire on the same album references Lennon's murder without mentioning his name.
To be fair - although the lyrics can apply to anyone, and the band & Freddie liked that people interpret lyrics in their own way - there is no doubt that this song was written for Freddie. What I mean is - Freddie is the reason that this song exists. All songs can be applied to different situations once they are out there - but their original inspiration remains true. Love and peace. Thanks for the reaction. X
Oh, man! I absolutely loved this! I listened to your comments in its entirety :) I can relate to so much of this! I am from England, U.K. and yes, we still feel the loss of our beloved Princess Diana
Another vote for Roger's Old Friends. Seems more intimate then this one but still difficult to listen to. I try not to mourn death but celebrate life but it doesn't stop the tears flowing and the hole in my soul ache
I also like Roger's voice in the video, his raspy voice reminds me of Janis Joplin. He was also like Freddie with the different octaves. He could hit the high notes as well. I don't know if you know the history of the song of Bohemian Rhapsody, but the high pitch notes in that song were actually Roger singing. Freddie would call that part of Roger's voice a dog whistle.
Brian May started the song 2 years earlier,he had the tune, chorus and some lines but felt something was missing That year Maurice Berjort ballet for life choreographed a ballet dedicated to freddie and their main ballet dancer jorge Donn who died nov 1992 who also died of aids The proceeds were donated to the mercury Phoenix trust a charity for aids Last year they released it on DVD I think it also has footage of making it Brian realised themes of dying too young and it just clicked and completed the song which was more personal for his solo album but agreed it should be a queen song Edit Versace designed all the costumes for the ballet released in 1997 Varsace was shot and killed July 1997
Brian has Freddie's piano in his living room, and Roger has a statue of his in his backyard. Those are solid mates! And about the "They're only flying too close to the sun" reference...besides clever it's very moving (Mercury being the closest planet to the sun)....makes me cry! Yes, Brian has said Roger wanted the song more generic as Brian's original lyrics were directly Freddie specific. I'd love to hear his original work before the changes because this still sounds beautifully Freddie specific to me...Freddie's champagne flute & sunglasses on the piano just tear me up.
Wiki says the opposite and so does QueenZone, that Brian wrote it as a tribute to Freddie, but when Diana died tragically right around that August ‘97, he decided it would be just right for “all who die too young”.
I believe in an unreleased clip we actually said that.. but then during the editing process we thought against it not thinking we were correct and put what is now in the released take.
This song/video RIP my heart out. In addition to being applicable to so many "famous" people, it also applies to the many MANY "everyday" people who have touched lives and then were taken too young. (BTW, Did you guys know that they make "white" coffee now?!? You should try it; it won't stain your teeth!)
Thanks for this, was kinda waiting for it. Since you are in this ”theme” of Freddie’s passing, go and see Roger Taylor’s solo song ”Old friends”, which is quite direct tribute to Freddie. I find it very emotional song also. There’s no good live video of it, but I believe that a good lyrics version is in TH-cam.
I think it was intentional. i remember J Kennedy being assasinated. I was at school and it was announced. There were tears. and Princess Diana, i was on holiday and we went home, couldnt of enjoyed it. Cried for a week.
Wrong again. The idea was totally from Freddie’s death. Brian said that a lot of other famous people happened to be dying around the time that he wrote the song, Diana, and Versace, so he said that the song could apply to their passing too.
Thanks for telling us the articles we got our information from are wrong. We just won’t use Brian’s quotes or anybody else’s quotes anymore in our research. We appreciate the help!
Yes, Brian was a man of many fabulous talents, guitar builder (in his teens with his father, he still plays it today) and player, 12-string guitar player, no. 1 song writer, vocalist on his own and for Queen, astrophysicist, pianist, author, etc. etc. etc. Roger does have a raspy/sexy regular singing voice but also has a beautiful falsetto that is way up there, clear, and beautiful. 'Another tricky situation'
taken from Its a Hard Life. 'This is a tricky situation'
'And now the party must be over'
references My Melancholy Blues: ‘Another Party’s over.’
