Farming in Zambia: The Advantages of Using Machinery to Turn Virgin Bush into Farm Land for Planting

- As Wintherthorn grows and develops each year, we need to turn more of the remaining virgin land to productive use. We also need to make roads in order to access the different parts of the farm.
This year our target was to bring an additonal 8 hectares into use for the planting of tree crops (eucalyptus and pine) and field crops (soya beans and kabulangeti beans). And it all needed to be done in time with the coming of rains by December.
The most effective way to do this is using earth-moving machinery like TLB's. They are much more effective than manual labour, especially at the size and scope of Winterthorn.
TLB stands for tractor loader backhoe. They are versatile, multipurpose pieces of machinery that can be used to dig the earth and load up materials such as rubble and sand.
This video looks back at how we planned and executed the land clearing exercise in late 2021 using two hired TLB machines.
After thirty days of work, including tonnes of earth being moved and hundred of trees having been stumped, our new fields were ready for planting.

Great work, but please, you must build contours/levee's throughout the property; #1 Stop erosion, #2 Direct surface water to where it's needed, #3 Catch and store/dam water if possible. I wish you every success. 🙏🙏🐓

You can do it! Farming doesn't always start with land that you own.
You can borrow or rent something to start with. But the important thing is to just get started.

I would recommend making use of the Land use Planning section under Ministry of Agriculture they make very comprehensive plans for farmes including soil survey and recommend crops.

Honestly, I am private sector born and bred. So when I need to get something done, I just do it myself.
And my experience of dealing with the government haven't exactly filled me with confidence. Issues with effectiveness.

Hi Ba Fred. It's a great question that we get asked all the time. But it's also a very difficult one to answer.
The reason is that such work depends on various factors:
How many trees are there?
How big are the trees?
How densely are the trees spaced?
What are the roots of the different trees like?
Is the land sloping?
Are we using an older or newer machine?
How experienced is the TLB Operator?
How motivated or committed is the TLB operator?
With all these factors, our approach to land clearing is to be patient and have a good budget. Then start to measure the rate of progress as you go along.
Your experience will come as you along, as it is with the rest of farming.

Wow that is a lot of land to clear at one time. we do all of our projects in phases, which helps us grow and develop as we go along.
There are plenty of equipment hire companies around and when the time is right, you shall come right. They are not very hard to find.

It was about 8 Hectares. But there a lot of variables in land clearing, including terrain, slope, quantity and type of trees and other vegetation, etc.

Hey there. Try asking that question, and you get the answer. The short response is that the bulldozer only pushes, while the TLB us much more versatile.

Not really, but we help out to a reasonable extent from time to time. It can be quite a challenge.

Indeed, Winterthorn is not a small place. We cleared about 10-11 hectares that year, if I remember.
But we have slowed down our tree planting at Winterthorn there since then. We just about ran out of space.
We are now planning for a proper tree plantation further up into the mountains where land is cheaper, and that will be commercially sized.
What is the cost of clearing one Hector of virgin land?
It all depends on many factors. Pls contact local TLB hire in your area and get a quote or indication.

There's a bit of a learning curve, and it took quite a few hours of practice.
But you can learn how to use it.
