I have a 2 yr old Weim named Bella. We live very near some large open fields, bluffs, beaches and woods. Weims need to run. And run and run. Training is easier after they are tired. Hand signals are a must versus voice command. They love to follow any scent so getting recall to kick-in is essential. Food such as cheese, liver and dried fruit are excellent treats. Find out what treat motivates your dog and step them up to their favorite one with increasingly harder tasks. Let them earn their free off leash time with better behavior. They are really intelligent so build up a repertoire of tricks....paw, lie down, sit....etc and then keep up the routine daily and keep adding more tricks, longer waits, more attention. Eye contact is key. No physical punishment or you create fear and disobedience. They can think for themselves and will. Mental stimulation with non physical games indoors can replace the physical when weather is bad. Train with a harness so they don't pull and learn to crate them so they learn their place, their den is their refuge. One of the most loving, smart and best looking dogs there is. Patience, lots of repetition and love will be rewarded incredibly.

How do they do in extreme colds? (Can they handle a 30 minute walk in up to -15C?)

They were originally bred for hunting larger prey in mainland Europe in warmer months, and -9 for 10 minutes is the most you'd risk, otherwise hypothermia and paw damage are likely. You'd struggle with any animal that isn't bred for the climate you're talking about, looking at huskies and larger breeds with longer fur and adequate fat layers. Otherwise, a large enclosed space is needed.

I have an eight month old that is the first dog I've truly had trouble with training. I've trained the many dogs we've had and never had any issues with training. This boy is a huge challenge every day. He is my husband's dog, however, he thinks I'm his human. This post is awesome, and I can see we have a long way to go before he can be trusted to walk away from in public. You have done a wonderful job with your training.

my almost 3y old weim starting just now to get control of its energy level . Imo Weimaraners need to start later their field training compared to other dogs . I might be wrong but that’s what I have experienced with this breed. My suggestion is not be too hard on them when they’re puppies as they re very sensible and intelligent dogs . What may take years for an adult dog to train it will only take few months with a Weimaraner.

Great to listen and see the comments.
My boy is 10 months old and driving me mad with the training, but worth every minute.
    He's also Welsh lol

All these Weimie puppies. For the love of God, PLEASE PLEASE do research into this breed. They are not for everyone. I adore the breed, would have no other. But for 30 years I’ve adopted & put back the pieces of these beautiful dogs because people buy the cute puppies and have no idea what they’re getting. Sorry to be dour but the Weim rescues are full of thousands of these wonderful dogs. It breaks my heart. Good luck to all! ❤❤

I love these Dogs I use to have a Dobbie when I was much younger.
I had no idea about trading etc I did everything wrong.
I’ve owned and trained Horses and that’s gone well.
I love the idea of the challenge of having this dog.
I do worry about getting knocked down my Dobbie use to run into fast 😮
I’m tools for that now 😂

🤔🐕 My question is, is it normal that they don't stop running? How do you teach them to stop? And stay calm 😅 I haven't been able to get mine to walk calmly and she's only 10 months old. Thanks for her advice.

How did you train him to walk off leash in the park ignoring other people? I have a 6 month old female and she loves all people which can be scary for some.

😂 The same happens to me. Jumps like a hare everywhere. It's a little scary when she doesn't take her eyes off something that catches her attention.

I get a Weimaraner puppy in 4 weeks from now on... I'm so excited and a bit nervous as well. 😅
Any starter tips? I mean, from dog dad to dog dad. 😉✌

If you want advice from dog mom, start training immediatelly but take it as a game at that stage of course. However, don't miss a day, be consistent! If you let it go thinking you have time enough, you'll be totally out of control and crazy by the time it'll be 5-6 months old. Be aware that you'll need to exercize your pup at least 2 hours daily beside a few walks (at the young age it'll be less exercise and many more short walks but it'll change over the time).

“How to train a Weimaraner” is the title but you don’t teach anything except tire them out.
