    What is a Union rug loom worth?

    Beautiful job. The X frame looms can be unstable and go out of square, and I think you did a fabulous job of bringing that loom back to life. As long as the beater hits the fell squarely you will be fine. You may want to add a steel rod to the beater just for the added whack to weave a good solid rug. A 1936? Bergman 12 shaft contramarche loom is my current rehab project. I watched all of your videos with interest. I've cleaned the wood parts and purchased Restor a Finish and beeswax to apply to the wood. I don't have the space or dexterity to sand and apply a new finish. Bravo! Let us see a rug!

      Thank you for the nice comment. We have been wanting to make a rug, but alas it may have to wait until Spring. Your idea of a steel rod sounds interesting. I hadn't thought of that. I will definitely look into it!

    I would suggest putting the uprights on all four corners, if you look at how it's done on a Union #36, they are set back from the corners out of the way of the hardware. They will also help keep the loom square. You can adjust the loom also to keep it in square.

    • @NorthernGardensChannel
      @NorthernGardensChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's easy to see why the later models had better supports. It is almost impossible at this point to make this particular loom square. I would certainly do that on future looms!

      @@NorthernGardensChannel Just picked mine up from the auction yesterday. $8! Someone had put it together wrong after moving it, so it looked like it didn't work. Can't wait to get it back together and start weaving. I got lucky, other than putting the treadles on the right way, it just needs cleaning and waxing to make her beautiful again.

      @@NorthernGardensChannel Finishing up tomorrow! Warp will go on on Monday or Tuesday. Made some replacement parts to update it, the apron was missing for the rug beam. If you weave, when you warp on, use leaders to put the warp on, make them long enough to reach the harnesses, that way you don't waste warp. Look up using lease sticks and using a tensioner made of hair ties at the back of the loom to help with maintaining tension when weaving. I tension the warp when I put it on. I put the spools on the rack, thread through the guide, up over the top of the castle roller, down through my tension dowels, knot the ends of each section, tie the leader on and crank on as many yards as I need, up to 70 turns of the warp beam. Then I loosely knot the end, tape it down and go to the next section. There are videos on here how to tension the warp several ways, but don't use nails, screws or the pegs on the beam to tie off warp, they will all give out or break. Preserving that beam is important! You can use methods from more modern looms and apply them to this one. I also made a canvas apron for the rug end that comes up and over the breast beam. Used 3/4" black gas pipline inside the hem of it, then lashed on the 1/2" steel tension rod that you tie the warp through after threading. I took weaving in college, so applied a lot of what I learned there to make this loom better. Still have to replace three of the pegs that were previously broken, but don't really need them. They are nice to have if you are weaving a pattern that uses the warp like a stripe or plaid.

    Just reassembled my first union loom today. I am learning so much from your restoration videos! When you replaced your heddles, how many do you place in each frame? I stopped the video many times but could not count them. I need to add more to mine and dont know how many to get for each frame. I cant find that info anywhere and know they come in packs of 100. I do hope you get a chance to reply. You've done a wonderful job of bringing that loom back to life.

      I put 250 on each frame. There will be extra on each. Woolery.com sells them in packs on 500. I am glad the videos are helping. Thank you for the nice comment!

    • @NorthernGardensChannel
      @NorthernGardensChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not so sure I would call it repaired, but more likely "clean." We haven't had a chance to use it unfortunately. But there are a number of ways to clean surface rust like this. I have a video about this in the Loom Playlist!

    How did you make the handle?

    • @NorthernGardensChannel
      @NorthernGardensChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the delay. The handle I made was me just playing around and being creative. Before shaping the wood, I partially drilled through a piece of wood on opposite sides so a round peg would seat inside of the hole. I then used a rasp to shape a 2x4 and used brass screws to attach them together. You could do this any number of ways!
