    They ARE, *very* close.
    Spring, 2021 here.
    The amp, well, I can always hear a amp’s output transformer.
    It gives some depth & headroom.
    By ~8:20, that’s the 1 difference.
    A decent light compressor in the loop to open up some air, & I’m just going to buy the floor box. THX, Rabz!

    It sounds like the preamp has a much more defined low end but at the cost of some of the higher frequencies, I think I prefer the preamp personally, didn't think I would. Excellent video!

    I think the Preamp with something like the Precision Drive infront of it would be killer. Roll off the low end and maybe bring out a bit more of that high mid bark

    To my ear the pedal sounds a bit more compressed, which probably lends for better recording. I like it! Great work as usual.

  • @rangerdoc1029
    @rangerdoc1029 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Both sound great. There's a bite to the pedal that the amp doesn't have. I mainly just hear it when a chord decays. There's a harshness in the pedal decay that in the amp sounds better.

    Awesome comparison, this is the gold standard for A/B demoing! Like you and others have mentioned, the pedal sounds like it has more low end. The amp has more bite, and little more grind in the mids. Seems like this could simply be a difference in EQ...and it might take an EQ out front and/or in the loop to make them sound identical.

    I think the amp sounds very slightly "smoother"...like every sound that comes out of it is more tied together... part of the same whole.
    While the pre-amp is slightly more grainy.
    But that's all very slight...and of course my ears are my own. They both sound excellent.

  • @xsonicassassinx

    The main tone in the preamp pedal is the same with the amp.
    The difference between them is in the Eq curve.

    Killer sounds in both cases.

    1980s-2017: Bringing a pedalboard with a decent distortion pedal so you can get your tones through any amp, even a clean Fender from the venue
    2018: Bringing your own god damn preamp to slave a clean amp.
    Wow we've come far.
    PS I honestly never got a Kraken because it didn't have a clean channel but always loved the distortion tones, and then eventually just decided to say F distortion amps because I never feel like dragging my own amps to gigs, so this sounds like it will solve all those issues - I'm assuming plugging this into a clean amp and then bypassing will give me the amp's original clean tones? I'd be getting it even if it was the same price as the kraken honestly, the fact its cheaper is just an even bigger bonus.

    • @thekramer1097
      @thekramer1097 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the bypass thing... yes. Is basically having 2 amps in one. Wonderful isn't?

  • @mrchrisbeaver
    @mrchrisbeaver ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The pedal sounds good here but compared to the amp specifically listening to muted chugs, the pedal is less defined and lacks clarity. It's a lot of pedal for the coin though. I wonder why they couldn't make the actual 1 to 1 preamp of the amp? Maybe it would have cost more? They're Currently 299 quid, I think I'll pull the trigger

    There's a lot more bass in the pedal! I heard that 5k stuff but just for a moment, so I guess it won't bother me at all.. BTW, sounds equally good but in a different way. My question is: is having shared eq really a limitation? In case you need two different sounds other than more or less gain, would you hook up a separate distortion pedal, or just an eq? This thing is really limitating to my experience (looking for changing my mind though!)

    One thing you could do with the Kraken pedal is pair it with the Seymour Duncan PowerStage 170, and have your entire amplifier setup on your board. No need to have an amp head. You can plug your pedalboard directly into your cab, and you are good to go. Better still is that setup only costs half what a Kraken head costs.

      I know I'm way late in commenting.. but, I have the Kraken v4 pedal and powerstage 200 and orange pedal baby, and trust me, the pedal baby is far better match and sound wise than the powerstage

    • @ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy
      @ThatBaritoneGuitarGuy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No worries on being late. Although the intervening time does mean we now have the second generation, which has a direct-out, so we don't need a power unit at all anymore. Just go directly into the mixing board.
      Anyway I had exactly the same results with all the various preamp pedals in my collection running into my Orange Pedal Baby versus running into my Electro-Harmonics 44 Magnum. Yes, the 44 Magnum does allow my pedalboard to power my speaker cab, but it being a Class D means it does not sound as good as the Class A/B Pedal Baby.
      The 44 Magnum is definitely the way to tour, but the Pedal Baby is definitely what you want living in your studio.
      That is if you don't have a mixing board. Thanks to many preamp pedals now having a direct-out, I have since completely eliminated the power unit altogether. The less you need to bring makes touring that much easier.

    I mostly see those preamp pedals going into the power section of an (expensive) tube amp. Does it sound different/worse when the power amp is transistor/ solid state based like a Harley Benton GPA-400? From my understanding the power amp is only amplifying the signal that comes out of the preamp and it should not make a difference.

How much will the power tubes in my amp (Hughes & Kettner 18twelve (2 x el84)) effect my tone vs the VX kraken amp? Does the effects loop still work if you bypass the kraken ?

    Great comparison! Can you do another video with the Sheriff and Countess amps and pedals as well?

    The pedal sounds a lot darker to my ear. Still great, but a lot darker.

    Amazing tones as usual, just wondering how you could use the kraken preamp in a stereo rig with two amps? Can I run it into the effects loops of both of the amps?

    Hey Bea, I'm finding that I need to run the master volumes on my Kraken pretty low compared to where you have them...right around 9 or 10 o'clock. Any more than that and it gets way too loud. I keep the master on my V40 right around 12 o'clock. Am I missing something?

    Anyone tried Kraken and Two Notes CAB M with Headphones? During Corona-Time I'll need an absolute silent practicing solution.

      hoefbert I’ve just got one and used it into a helix with impulse responses. Very impressed so far. Seemed to respond better to pick dynamics/guitar volume the the models in the helix. But I’ll see how it goes after the newness has worn off
