It seems like this band just does any style they want based on how they’re feeling. That’s a really intuitive and natural way to approach music. It’s one of the reasons why I love them so much.
Not saying OCHL wasnt good. I enjoyed them venturing into softer territory than their first 3 albums. In fact I enjoyed it more than Sunbather or New Bermuda simply because of how different it was. But the thought of the band coming out with an album that's dark, raw, heavy and scary like a lot of more modern European black metal bands is pretty exciting to think about. They have the potential to release one of the darkest kvlt albums of this decade, and since they're in the mainstream it will wake lots of people up to real black metal instead of the blackgaze they're known for.

Without lyrics or vocals, this song communicates a deep sense of frustration and hopelessness. The screams just add to it. Its a masterpiece. So intense.

The new direction is fun. I hope they can come up with enough musical motifs to sustain it. Heavy metal has a history of being repetitive(without a purpose for repetition). The older albums broke it up with softer more introspective tracks like in Sunbather and in the previous album relied on more melodies and textures to carry it. Like to see the album as a whole before I judge too much.

the band's decidedly non-traditional aesthetic is sadly the only thing needed to completely turn "tru metal heds" off. If Sunbather was a black cover with the band and album name in some indistinguishable cumshot-like font, it would be metal enough for them.

Holy crap, was a fan of their previous work but this is fantastic. Vocal's remind me a bit of Cattle Decapitation (one of my all time favs), similar technique perhaps? Either way, really digging this!

the heavy riffs are so much more dynamic and interesting than the wall of sound chords of their other albums. they need to mix this direction with the melodic shoegazy stuff
Ever wonder if Sunbather wasn't pink and orange that they wouldn't be such a polarizing "love/hate" band?
the band's decidedly non-traditional aesthetic is sadly the only thing needed to completely turn "tru metal heds" off. If Sunbather was a black cover with the band and album name in some indistinguishable cumshot-like font, it would be metal enough for them.
@@BiggyTalls93 , major chords and hipster rich boy aesthetic. Sunbather was the "imagine dragons covering the smiths" of the hard rock world, they threw in blastbeats and called it metal. This song is actually metal for 5 of the 7 minute duration.

The only thing I personally find worse than cringy basement dwelling BM fans are whiny "feelings" people shouting elitist at anyone who contradicts their opinion. Elitist is a made up term, and in a metal context it's pretty hypocritical to throw around. Just the act of calling someone elitist makes you guilty of the exact same behavior you supposedly don't like. Saying old Deafheaven isn't metal is kind of like saying invertebrates don't have spines - I'm not sure what's so offensive about it. Does it have to be metal for you to like it? It's rock music, same family tree, different branch. Rock music is awesome, but it isn't metal. That's all.

I like a bunch of shit that isn't metal and, in my opinion, old Deafheaven (Sunbather in this case, haven't listened to their first album) is a different attempt at black metal.
