The only reason they're afraid of water is because, usually, they are not exposed to it early enough or often enough. This also applies to going in the car, to walking on a leash. Kittens are very open to new experiences. But once they're 5-6 months old, they have already reached that teen phase where they know better than anyone else. Whatever behavior you want them to adapt to (whether swimming, car rides, being a leash) begin when they're about 8 weeks old and do it every day until they are at least a year old. It may be difficult but take the time and you'll be glad you did.
