      England is a republic... always has been, but a republic under a Crown... a Crowned Republic... a Royal Commonwealth... a Commonwealth headed by a King, a Commonwealth & Kingdom... the English “dominium politicum et regale” (a political and royal dominion), as oppose to the French “dominium regale” (a royal dominion),... which is what the 'technically illegal' Stuarts, wanted to try n reorganise England in to... at the expense of our English Commonwealth(Body Politic).
      Our English Commonwealth(Body Politic), can not do away with our English Crown... and our English Crown can not shut out our English Commonwealth(Body Politic).
      A republic has little to do with what form of Office of Head of State you have, but rather, the viscidity of Laws & how they are made, i.e. do the Laws lie in the King's mouth, or do the Laws lie in proper Parliamentary procedure... the former is a pure Monarchy(Absolute Monarch), the French “dominium regale” (a royal dominion),... the latter is a Republic,(A State/Commonwealth/Body Politic/Political Community), the early Roman “dominium politicum" (a political dominion),...
      The key difference is that, a Republic/a State/Commonwealth/Body Politic/Political Community, which ever one you want to say, fundamentally needs a Head, for at the very lest, to guide it & to represent it in a singular physical form... hence, the English “dominium politicum et regale” (a political and royal dominion),... the English middle way.
      Why have a King then and not a Lord Protector or a President?... well, because, in English Common Law, the Office of King is suffice for that task... as it is a long, intrenched, highly developed, well known Office of State in English Common Law,... unlike the Office of President... thus its powers are well definable with proper parameters... as a result those powers are known & limited... as for a Lord Protector(which is an English medieval title for a regent), that Office of State's powers are *not* well definable with proper parameters... as a result those powers are unknown & unlimited, in English Common Law... thus, tis back door for despotism... which is why Cromwell rejected Parliament's offer of our English Crown & why Parliament offed Cromwell our English Crown in the first place... its also why the restoration of our English Crown happened in 1660, they know they don't get it quite right in 1660, but its better then Cromwell... we do get it right though in 1689 with William & Mary.
      Also, a development in English Common Law has given us Englishmen the legal ability to threaten, our King's with real, actual, legal Parliamentary deposition(as well to actual act on said threat)if & when it is necessary to do so, as to prevent & or dispose of bad & or tyrannical King's that may, or may not, come out of the wood work form time to time... you know... *"the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants"* kind of thing... and, as it was said in good English military song, you may have hared...
      When Canons Are Roaring:
      *"Brave Mars begins to rouse,
      and he doth bend his brows,
      Boreas burst out in blows,
      great Etnas fire.
      He that may loose the field,
      yet let him never yield,
      Though thousands should be kill'd
      let soldiers try it.
      When canons are roaring, and bullets are flying,
      He that would honour win, must not fear dying,.."*
      England is a Commonwealth & Kingdom... a Commonwealth headed by a King, a Crowned Republic... and may God help us Englishmen to keep her that way.
