I started out in mid 80's with a base station setup. Luckily for me I got in with a group of guys that introduced me to SSB right off. My very first base station antenna was a brand new Star-Duster .25 wave that I bought off a customer of mine at the time that he had bought brand new and never used it. It was stored in the original box in his attic. I bought a new Cobra 148 GTL in 1986 and a power supply for use as my base setup. Latter I bought a new Uniden Washington, both radios were modified. After a mishap with my Star-Duster antenna (storm wrecked it) I bought a new Antron 99. I still have the A99, but it's been in storage building since probably around 1996-97 if I was guessing. It needs some attention like painted, clear coating is gone because the small shards of fiberglass will rough your hands up pretty good if your not wearing gloves handling it. Also when A99 was new looks to me the factory used a type of silicone or whatever caulk around the metal connection joints, mine is brittle and worn out to point it just crumbles. Funny they say not to use silicone or caulk to seal those connectors, what's up with that if they used it to start with when it was new? Or are they talking about not coating the screw in joint with the silicone or caulk?

So higher on 40 shorten antenna wave by raising the ring,, higher on 1 lower them to lengthen the wave

Hi, informative video but there is nothing like a real unboxing and commentary this holds peoples attention followed by erecting the antenna and doing an on air test as looking at instructions although important is a bit boring i have a Antron 99 here in the UK and find it performs really good always interested in seeing how people tackle things with an antenna installation this is not a criticism just my thoughts not sure if yours is for CB or ham but mine is for CB thanks and good DX.....

Great comment Steve. I appreciate it.
I'm actually putting my base station together. I'm waiting for my Antron to show up in the mail. (So, I don't have it yet.)
I made this video, so that when my antenna arrives, I'll have pre-read the instructions.
      Everything you've said is true.
I had a previous TH-cam channel (on a different subject) and I gained 8K subscribers (No B.S.). The trouble was that I was creating videos for the sake of my subscribers, rather than creating videos for me. It became a full-time job.
I plan on making an unboxing vid, and a few vids on my set-up, once I get going.
Its amazing how much planning goes into a base station.
I don't have a big lot, so erecting a 17' antenna on a 12 foot mast is going to be interesting. (And, the mast is already built! 4x4s and concrete; nice and plumb)
I've got 50 feet of LMR 400 coming, and a 13.8 V Pyramid power supply. I've opted to use the cheapest mobile Uniden CB available, since I own it already.
I'll be relying on an old Uniden BCT8 scannner to scan the band for me.
I experimented building a 102" whip antenna, but gave up once things started getting expensive. Ultimately, this was a failure for me, I was getting SWR at 3.0. So, I didn't want to mess around experimenting, that's why I've ordered myself an Antron.
I've had a mobile rig for four years now, but due to low traffic, and a cheap antenna, I haven't had much success at contacts. So, in a strange way, a base station will be more like a first-time experience in CB.
There is too much to mention.
I've got big plans. I think it would be fun to build an arduino circuit that automatically DXs... or a mod to my existing CB to scan each channel. I'm already into hobby electronics, so these projects don't seem too ambitious.
I'm actually excited to get a base-station set up, because there are a lot of electronics projects I want to get back into.
I'm leaving my self some room for growth, down the road. If all goes well, I could see upgrading to a Galaxy 959 (or something with sideband) and a linear amp. But $300 Canadian dollars, seems like a rip-off, just to get talking on side-band.
I don't think there is any avoiding it. A base station will cost over $1000 Canadian. Or around, £700.
      And, time permitting.

@@2bit661 Thanks, iv'e been into CB since 1977 i have numerous radios and operate mainly SSB my newest radio is a yaesu 450D so if you do decide on a antenna and installation video i look forward to seeing it and will subscribe and click on the bell cheers for now.....

@@2bit661 Sorry just read youre long reply lol i do understand where youre coming from SSB is a must. i think my Antron was about £80 and the Yaesu 450D £520 does 100 watts things are not cheap today and with the summer months ahead and slightly better skip conditions a good quality radio is a bonus so the cost is similar to yours i'm also into electronic projects as you said to much to mention. :)

It says not to coil the excess coax... then what the heck should I do with it? I will NOT cut it.

Thanks for the comment. Is there anything you did like? Nothing? When I made this video, its because I was putting up my own antenna. I had no idea, it would get 10,516 views.
The vid was made for my own reference.
Jim, should I take my video down? What do you think?

    Junk

      @2bit661  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey, I don't blame you James. Setting up a a base-station antenna and a rig at home can be frustrating. As well, having meaningful conversations the CB, aside from trucker talk, can be a challenge.
Is there a better antenna that you recommend?
Personally, I don't think the Solarcon 99 is junk. I do feel it is overpriced. And, my experience purchasing it through Amazon was frustrating, given the box was damaged with missing parts, and I had to exchange the whole antenna (through the mail).
I can vouch that I can talk up to 10 - 15 km (un-amplified), which is pretty great, in my opinion. It satisfies me. I also have my antenna on a mast, with 50 feet of LMR 400 cabling. I also didn't have to tune my antenna, as it had a low SWR right out of the box. And, two years later, my antenna is still in tact. I checked it with my SWR meter.
I am not brand loyal. And, you are entitled to your opinion. Kindly, would you share why the Solarcon 99 is junk? What is a better antenna?

@@2bit661 these a99 antennas are a medioca type antenna, not the best, but certainly not the worst.
The IMAX 2000, sireo gainmasters etc are better but you pay the extra $$$'s for them.
Worked skip easily with my a99.
