- I see a ton of people recommending to use Steam Link to connect your Quest to your PC. Don't! There's a reason Virtual Desktop is constantly in the best selling games/apps list on the Quest store and is so highly rated even though
Wow, I've had my Q3 for about 4 months now and only used it twice. The second time I was drunk and sitting on my computer chair watching TH-cam on it, massive screen and at some point I woke up under my desk, my hands covered in blood and blood on the floor. I broke my nose as I hit the edge of the desk apparently. But after watching this I will get back into that!
Thanks for the video mate! ❤❤
You should. There are loads of awesome trippy or creepy or crazy things you can get lost in while drugged out of your mind on whatever you prefer. :D
I use it while im away in the motorhome. The pc at home does the grunt and sends game to me in the middle of nowhere🙌🏻
Sweet!
It's a great software for low response time and low battery use, but it lacks so many features from Immersed to organize the screens, multiple portals, more freedom in your environments...
I was going to ask if a 2070 super is capable of even putting in the work needed to play these games, then I saw that 2070 is recommended for medium graphics, thanks! Good to know I can play these once my quest 3 comes in
That setting only changes the resolution. I only use a 4060 and can set most made for VR games at High or Ultra. If I enable SSW I can run Half-Life Alyx at VD High@90 and all ultra in game.
awesome vid, thanks
Why do you use those shortcuts? In Virtual Desktop, all your (officially) installed games show up under the "Games" section on the screen-unless it's a pirated copy, of course.
In addition to everything you mentioned, Virtual Desktop lets you watch movies in various ways: in a theater setting, using pass-through, in 3D, 360-degree view, or regular mode. You can watch movies on your virtual computer screen and run games on your PC, but Virtual Desktop also has its own built-in player.
If you have games that support SBS 3D, you can play them in 3D with Virtual Desktop, as it has options for running different types of 3D (hovering your pointer under the screen will highlight the buttons for these settings).
If you have two different headsets with Virtual Desktop installed, you can switch between them without stopping your game. Just leave the game running, turn off Virtual Desktop on the current headset, and load it up on the other one. The game will resume seamlessly.
You asked a question then answered it yourself. Idk what I'm supposed to say now. You can do even more stupid complex weird things with it. Instead of playing a game that supports SBS 3D on one virtual monitor you can spawn another and use your gpu control panel to set them up as a dual-monitor and so instead of SBS 3D meaning less screen space you get the full display for each eye. Or make 3 15ft wide virtual monitors and combine them into one mega tri-monitor and curve them to wrap a flat game almost completely around you. Honestly, best VR software I've seen for ease of use and versatility.
@AbyssianOne It was more an expression of my thoughts. But wow...glad you taught me something. I'll look into it later when I'm in front of my pc again. Sounds interesting...
This is so freaking cool!!!!!!!! I'd just get one of these instead of a monitor or TV!!!!!!!!!
I had a 65" 4k TV as my 'monitor' and I put that in another room because I'd probably just end up hitting it and the virtual monitors look just as good and can be sized or positioned anywhere.
there is only 1 point to use VD instead of air link its emulating vive trackers... if quest link will do same i will go back to it cuz it work such stable than VD.
U have lags on 3:15. And no i have same lags on VD from time to time and no lags in air link same time.... i know how to fix it but VD still costs 20$ for it...
VD is way more stable and smooth than Air Link. I have 'lags' because I'm using the headset to record at 4k while trying to use the headset.
@@AbyssianOne yeah, but most of youtube vids telling its not.
Ty for the video, I learned alot 😊
You mentioned playing 2d games. So it is possible to play steam 2d games on vd in the headset? I have a meta 3
Yeah, you can play 2d games in the virtual desktop window just the same as using it as a PC screen.
@AbyssianOne ty sir
Does this work on Linux and ARC GPUs?
No, not much does.
Linux has ALVR
@@deadboy1255 I tried with Windows using the ARC it works.
Even if I use vdxr Steam vr still runs in background when I launch steam game from vd how should resolve that
If a game is coded to use openvr then steamvr will have to open for the game to play. Likewise, if a game is coded to use Oculus, The Meta Quest Link app will have to open for the game to play. Vdxr is an open XR runtime, so only games that are coded to use openxr will run without opening either of the two other apps. The good thing is Open. XR is the newer standard and that's what most new VR games use.
Well, more clients in windows. I like my windows clean and not having many services running. So, just Steam will do.
You can set VDXR as your OpenXR runtime and using virtual desktop you won't have to have either the Quest link or SteamVR running to play them. Since openxr is the new standard, it works with most VR games and saves overhead. You're actually getting worse performance using SteamVR for everything.
@AbyssianOne I already have Steam running and it already works fine and no noticeable performance hit.
@@cocobos You're only comparing playing with SteamVR to playig with SteamVR so of course you don't notice the difference. There's a 10-20% fps boost when you can avoid running SteamVR and the Quest Link app.
what application are you using to list all your executables from their folders?
I'm using batch files to call VD because it's games menu only shows games from the Steam or Rift stores, then creating shortcuts to the .bat file and changing the icon to be the icon of the exe so they look better.
@@AbyssianOne ok thanks
i am using virtual desktop now
Stupid question but... How did you remove Meta junk and aded VD on your Quest? I can add just one app and it's QGO but then I can't add the shortcut to VD as it doesn't allow me to remove anything else from the left part of the dock.
You can only add one app, but there's one thing in their pinned slot you can actually drag off to unpin. I forget what it is, but I did that so I could pin both VD for anything PC/PCVR related and QGO for anything standalone.
Hi, when I launch VR game through VD shortcut the SteamVR still running in the background while game launched, should I disable SteamVR by uninstall it? I didn't see SteamVR running in your video?
SteamVR launches with the 3rd game I open. I have VDXR set as my OpenXR runtime, so OpenXR games won't use SteamVR. If you have VD you can set that in the VD streamer app. Some games will still open SteamVR, but if it's not needed for a game it won't open. You always need to have SteamVR and Quest Link installed, they just won't run unless necessary.
When using this for work. Would the text be readable? I’ve recently tried immersed app, and the text is blurry even in 4k, at the same time the video on TH-cam looks okay
Very much so. If I put the virtual screen over the 1080p monitor I'm using and match it size to size the virtual screen is actually clearer than the 1080p screen.
Can you actually play Steam VR games this way?
Of course. I ran one in that video. If you notice the SteamVR white lines screen flickered before Arizona Sunshine 2 opened. Using VD you just don't have to mess with the stupid steam menu and all the clicks to exit a game, you can just pop the VD menu open and click exit. Using a Quest you can run ANY VR game except for Playstation VR exclusives this way.
@@AbyssianOne I saw that later in the video before commenting. I had no idea this worked. I just tried it myself and it really works great. Thanks for the video!
Does the computer need to be connected to wireless wifi? Does ir work if its connected to LAN?
The computer needs to be hooked to the router via ethernet, but if you can't do that with your main router you can always pick up a cheap router to use as a dedicated router, and just hook that to the PC with ethernet and then connect the Quest to it's 5ghz wifi signal.
How did you make shortcuts for games on the virtual desktop?
You need to make a text file in the directory with the game exe and add your path to the VD app and then the game exe such as: "C:\Program Files\Virtual Desktop Streamer\VirtualDesktop.Streamer.exe" "BladeAndSorcery.exe"
And then you need to rename the txt file so it's name is .bat instead of .txt, and you can make a shortcut to that .bat file and put it anywhere and name it whatever you want.
You can google "How to make virtual desktop bat." I use the ARMGDDN VD Bat maker program to do it automatically.
