Thanks for making such thoughtful and thorough quality content available for free for the world to access! Your well informed work on this channel has redeemed astrology from it's reputation of being an unserious form of entertainment or heresy to a respectable, complex, ancient field of study and practice. I salute thee 🙏

The question from Ian at ~9:25 about how to shake the feeling of “this is bullshit...” so you can suspend belief:
I know this feeling well as a former atheist and continuing doer of hard science. It’s been a few things to help shake it off and have Beginner’s Mind:
I got in the habit of questioning the accuracy of my knowledge. I am forced to for work, so that continual humbling helps.
Second, my values have changed over the years. The more suffering I’ve seen, the more I’ve became increasingly comfortable with finding value in the immaterial or unscientific as long as it works. I became less comfortable judging the merit of something solely based on its ability to fit into a single framework: in this case the modern sci method. The way something worked and knowing those details became less important to me versus just finding what worked. (Assuming of course that everyone is following ‘First do no harm’.)
It’s possible to practice evidence-based work, while still holding space for less recognized methods of analysis like astrology. It’s recognizing the duality of the situation and being ok with not resolving it right this moment. It doesn’t have to mean a lack of intellectual integrity if you’re a critical thinker who understands the limitations of things.

Astrology to me(Physician) is pattern recognition which is how majority of medicine is. Evidence of scientifically proven causes is being added as time goes on. There is also a component of intuitive alignment with astrology which is not present in the modern medicine as intuition has been excluded and it is not yet recognized as an important healing modality.

Thank you, Chris, Ian and Shaye for this interesting episode. I have to say though, Ian and Shaye, you pretty much confirmed all the biases and stereotypes of men engaged in their first serious conversation about astrology. Chris, as a novice to astrology myself, it would have helped me, and maybe Ian and Shaye, if early in the conversation we’d all have been given a look at one or both of their charts (birth date, time, and place deleted for privacy), and have you explain a few things, perhaps even providing an abridged reading, using their chart(s). Learning just how complex astrology can be a real eye opener for a sceptic, especially if you can tell them something about themselves you wouldn’t have been able to know without the chart.
Thanks again for presenting this episode. It was enlightening.

    • @faithjvs8320
      @faithjvs8320 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@pce i never suggested springing a chart reading on anyone. You can’t produce a chart without obtaining a date, place, and exact time of birth. Those would have to be obtained with permission, precisely as Chris did near the end of the podcast. My suggestion would have taken what Chris did a step further. It implies obtaining the information and permission in advance for a brief chart analysis as a means of explaining or demonstrating concepts that are not correctly understood by average skeptics. My goal is enhanced understanding, not some kind of gotcha game. I’m not interested in those kinds of games or in trolling. From observation I think I can say the same of Chris Brennan

    • @faithjvs8320
      @faithjvs8320 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@pce Were we watching the same podcast? Because Ian and Shaye are not typical skeptics in that the whole point to their podcast series is an “immersion camp” to learn about a topic they know nothing about. They were clearly interested in the topic of Astrology. One of them even gave his birth data so Chris could produce a natal chart.
Look, I made a comment about what would have helped me as a novice to better understand some things Chris was explaining. It’s really moot since the episode is done. There’s no need to litigate either Chris’s presentation or my newbie suggestion. It was only a small suggestion from a novice interested in learning more. You don’t like my suggestion? Oh well...

Fascinating conversation. I listened to this first before going to Camp Re-education for their full experience. I must say that the Part 1 was very difficult to listen to. It felt so harsh, judgmental, and close-minded. It actually solidified how deep my belief in astrology truly is. Knowing that this interview happened after Part 1, I was very excited to hear Part 2. You would never know from this interview that they held such deep-rooted beliefs going in, so kudos guys for not only giving Chris such respect, but for asking truly brilliant questions. After listening to Part 2, I was happy to hear specifically where they landed. It IS a loving and kind community. I’m not a big fan of horoscopes, and pop astrology, but I do use my “tool box of knowledge” about sign characteristics when dealing with the relationships in my life. I’ve understood better, issues that came up before I studied Astrology and they make sense to me now. It has proven to me (in my experience) to be quite accurate. And as one of their guests said... it is like learning another language. So true. And the jokes!! After the train wreck presidential debate hosted by Chris Wallace, I saw a meme that said “what did you expect would happen when a Gemini debates a Scorpio moderated by a Libra.” I laughed out loud.
Astrology adds an extra layer to my life that makes me feel grounded and connected. I’m a huge fan of science as well. They do not feel mutually exclusive to me. Thank you, Chris, for all that you do. Love your PodCast.

In regards to astrology and tarot, each tarot card has an astrological association eg. The 7 of Cups is Venus in Scorpio, The 2 of Wands is Mars in Aries, etc. The link between the two is huge.
I'm a tarot reader and I came to astrology through tarot, so it was interesting to hear how often its the other way around :) as for predicting the future, many tarot readers including myself don't do that (or don't even believe in it), its used for accessing the subconscious. I do a 12 house tarot spread all the time :)

Chris -- the ideal astrologer to answer those questions!! Your historical insights do so much to put astrology as we understand it today into context. Thank you, and to Ian and Shaye for the questions.
As to whether astrological forces work independently from our observation and attention, one way individuals can experiment with answering this is to review any journal notes and diary entries they may have made before being introduced to astrology, and seeing whether events matched planetary transits that occurred at those times.
1:14:26: On the inherent neutrality of the planetary configurations, I am reminded of an astrologer from the UK, Pam Gregory, who likens astrology to a "weather report" giving us a practical forecast, indicating how inclement or favorable conditions may be for different ventures at different times, and how we can maximize the potentials of each period. It's really a vast field, truly a lifetime's pursuit 😊

Wow - it's sad that people think Wikipedia is the last word on everything, without realising that there are editors who bring their biases into their editing, and instead of putting information out for the public to decide upon, they end up as opinion pieces. You won't find objective truth on Wikipedia. Even my kid's high school forbade them from using it as a reference - It is one aspect of what should be a greater body of research.

It's difficult to see past the pop culture and shallow understanding of it. My own sun sign is Gemini and my entire youth up until finding your podcasts thought that was all there was to it, therefore I had such a misconception of my own personality. Learning about the rising sign and digging deeper into different alignments I see myself so much more clearly now. Also, the book, Physics of Astrology, might help them alongside learning the deep cultural and historical history of this practice. Super great discussion, thanks for having it! 🪐

In my research into this ( of many yrs), most people are NOT astrology skeptics or non believers, they may or may not be interested but they often will be interested enough to listen politely or engage with it. Most people respond to evidence and most people have a healthy level of humility and imagination and ARE OPEN to topics that may be alien to them.
The astrology skeptics are often MILITANT emotional types, they behave like a MOB, they have a massive issue with anything NEW AGE, they always have a smirk, mockery always follows, and they always manage to create a battle of MENSA membership, IQ levels, race wars, gender wars, etc. They also seem to have an issue with WOMEN, and minorities etc ( Incel community is a HUGE % of such folks and I think I know why).
When I look at such charts, I see a damaged jupiter/9th house/sag realm, every single time. Vedic texts literally identified these eons ago. So my conclusion has been, anytime someone who has NEVER even had a reading, doesn't even know the background to astrology, not even the wikipedia propaganda version, and has such a strong opinion ( you all know how anti astrology jihadusts react), the BEST action is NO ACTION. Leave. Do not engage with them AT ALL. DO NOT offer to read their charts, DO NOT educate them, DO NOT provide links and books and try to explain the sciences ( something I used to do as a PhD engineer). It is pointless, 100% of the time. The issue they have isn't logic or proper information or lack of clarity or confusion. You could provide them peer-reviewed articles and they will DOUBLE DOWN.
They ENJOY going after anything right brain bc their right brain is CEMENTED. IT is not functional. They CANNOT compute and comprehend new age topics, nor can they litrature, poetry or quantum physics. They are newtonian reductionists, and live in FEAR. They lack imagination due to dysfunctional right brain. Einstein, wrote what he wrote about imagination probably after dealing w such folks.

Thank you Chris for explaining astrology so comprehensively in this show. As a student I feel very strongly about the affirming quality of particularly psychological astrology which can be so healing and freeing but it's not always easy to explain to friends how or why it works. However after listening to you explaining historically and culturally I feel a lot better equipped to do so. Like getting a really good bird's-eye view of how astrology sits in our human context.

Also, I think something that is SUPER evident and distinct is your concentration on the subject itself rather than letting your personal ego get worked up .... and I think this is really what makes a great ambassador for astrology! The funny thing is .... most people hold others input to standards that they don't hold themselves to .... in example, these people were much more critical of your thinking and really didn't seem to be very focused on applying the same critique to their own .... although they attempted to create the image they were doing this but even that had a kinda shallow undertone. Its like, can people just play fair? Their feelings seem to get hurt when in reality they're the ones asking about the truth ... right? If people want the truth .... then .... lol

Chinese Astrology is NOT based on your year of birth. The focus is on your day of birth. The year tells you nothing without relating it to the day.
The confusion may be all the publicity over the Chinese New Year. This is a celebration for Spring Festival, traditionally for Farmers (which was the majority in old China) to bring in the new harvest year. Ancient Chinese were not educated, so well-known animals were used to represent Time. The animal name, for example Year of the Ox, is to define the actual year, it has no astrological interpretation.
Chinese Astrology on the other hand, uses a Solar calendar which begins approximately on the 4th of February every year.
One must have an awareness of Chinese culture to interpret its astrology, using western concepts to understand it can be problematic. The closest correlation I can find for interpretation is: the year represents where Jupiter will be in a Sidereal chart. So having your year pillar as Ox, is similar to Jupiter in Capricorn.

Adding to that, the serious forms of chinese natal astrology (eg Eight characters, Ziwei Doushu) involve casting charts that go down to the *hour* of birth.
(Some even go so far as to cast charts for 15 minute increments)

As someone who is self-studying Hellenistic, Vedic, and Chinese Astrology, I say YES to your comment. If Western Astrology has birth chart, Chinese Astrology has BaZi. If Vedic Astrology they have Vastu Shastra and Nakashatras, in Chinese Astrology they have Feng Shui, Gua, and Chinese Lunar Mansion. Both systems parallel each other so much!
Side note: Mayan Astrology is very difficult for me to understand as of now lol. Maybe because it's so different from Western/Asian style of Astrology especially on it's orientation.

Jupiter is a planet, sometimes called wanderer because it follows the ecliptic in the path of the Sun's movement in the sky, unlike fixed stars that do not follow the Sun. Along this ecliptic twelve constellations are identified and relate to the twelve symbolic divisions of the astrologic zodiac. Capricorn is one section covering a time period that is usually in the mid winter on the northern hemisphere. Its symbol is that of a goat with a fish tale.
A general delineation for Jupiter in Capricorn is growth through practical means. Jupiter is seen as a planet bringing positive influence that can increase benefits for the individual; Capricorn is said to be a cardinal earth sign, cardinal meaning initiating and primal, earth meaning grounded and potent, so combining those individual meanings is how western Astrology builds up a basic Zodiacal symbolism. A typical Astrology chart has a few more layers though, so not much more can be said without talking more about how you are applying this information.

    Such a great discussion here........
As one who is by no means a professional astrologer, one thing I like to point out when small talking with non-astrologers is the 4 Saturn-Pluto conjunctions that occurred between 1900 and 2020 and their correlation with : the bloodiest year of WW1 (1916), the beginning of the Cold War (1947), The AIDS pandemic (1982, when the term first came into use, though it began in 1981), and finally 2020 with Covid. And I can show them on my tablet using the Stellarium app, that way they see an actual star map of the sky along with the planetary movements rather than an unfamiliar astrological chart wheel.

Very very interesting video! Have you considered of touching topics like:
    1) Why the planets have the properties and qualities they have? Are these properties there since their creation in the beginning of the solar system?
    2) If yes what would the properties of planet earth be for a person been born for example on Mars? Since Mars takes Earth's place, then there couldn't be any effect of Earth s Moon to that person and if not would the Moons of Mars Phobos and Deimos replace the properties of the Moon in some way? How would astrology work on a different location of our universe?
    3) Are the properties of the signs contained only within our Milky Way Galaxy or are they universal?
Thank you! These questions bother me for years!

2:03:30 Playing this back for a second time. Is anyone else wondering what Shaye's natal placements are? Oftentimes I can hear people's charts through the words that they speak. And if I were to guess, I would bet that he has his sun, moon, rising OR the ruler of one of those placements in a fixed sign. And if I were to guess further, I'd say that the two fixed signs could either be Taurus and/or Aquarius. Also, based on the shape of his face and his skepticism, I would also guess that he too has a strong Virgo placement in one of his top three. Would've loved to see his chart to get confirmation.
***Update*** So I went down the rabbit hole and clicked the link to their podcast in the description. Clicked on their astrology podcast #1. Straightaway, they were discussing their horoscope on the Co-star app and Shaye stated (indirectly) that he's a Taurus sun. So I definitely guessed correctly. ONLY now I'm wondering if he subconsciously picked up characterizing himself as "fixed" only after having read an astrological description of his Taurus sun. OR if "fixed" was previously how he described himself prior to reading stuff about his sun sign. AND finally, it makes sense that he and his co-podcast partner (Ian) are touching on esoteric subjects given that Uranus (ruling astrology) is transiting his sun sign. :-)

The answer to why astrology works is simple and super-overlooked. Electromagnetism. Sect works because the Sun, Jupiter, and Saturn have electromagnetic fields, while the Moon, Venus, and Mars do not. Our DNA is magnetic. Ignore the signs behind the planets and simply use them as marking points to make things easier to map from a geocentric perspective on Earth. What’s happening is the solar system is a grid in and of itself. If we look at the solar system from a bird’s eye view, we’re seeing huge balls of mass have gravitational and electromagnetic effects on the Earth and everyone occupying the Earth. That’s why astrology works.
