Ashwell Level Crossing

Wednesday October 3 2018 at 15.41. 66701 pulling 31 trucks possibly to Felixstowe. We saw 66701 at Stainforth Road LC in Yorkshire a month ago. This crossing was filmed 6 years ago when one of the lights wasn’t working. A number of people have pointed that out since. It was a 2 barrier crossing then and I said it should become a AHB crossing. It is 2.2 miles south of Whissendine LC but only a quarter of a mile from Ashwell Gatehouse LC which can be seen from the signal box and which it controls. In WW2 there was a US army base here which then became a prison until 2011 when it closed after damage by rioters. The term ‘gatehouse’ may refer to those other uses. In 2014 a member of the public walked across this crossing when it was closed to road traffic for maintenance and was just missed by a freight train. An original watercolour painting of this crossing at night is currently for sale for £570. It makes it look as if the signal box is on fire. www.gallerysta...
