One thing about a lighter blade: The kinetic energy you achieve in a swing is proportional to the mass, but also to the *square* of the velocity. E = 1/2 m v^2. If you can swing it faster than a heavier knife = more kinetic energy. (Of course there other factors such as blade thickness etc., but you get the idea.)
Unfortunately its not primarily the kinetic energy that counts here but the mass driven momentum or impulse P=m*v that generates the penetration. That's why a spear passes a moose like a magnum bullet even though it's 100 times slower.
Yes, correct, a valid point. I was also thinking about mentioning momentum, but didn't want to post too long a comment. In the balance your argument may be the better, perhaps. With a knife of half the weight you'd need twice the velocity to attain the same momentum. Perhaps that is not easily done. OTOH, a knife half the weight is likely to have a thinner profile to facilitate better penetration, hence needing less velocity. Like I parenthetically observed, there are other factors to consider... Taken to extremes, a disposable razor blade weighing less than one gram or so at close to light speed would be the best chopper, ever. A ludicrous scenario, of course. The core of my post being that a light blade can still make for a good chopper, within realistic parameters. And now I've made that too long comment that I didn't want to. ;-)
Thank you, Rick! No worries, lol! I'm already back in action. I just hate doing stupid mistakes with knives when I'm actually done doing the real work with them. :p
Cheers! A real dependable chopper. I run an A2 and a 3V and am happy with both. The only big advantage of the 3V would be the possibility of running the Golok with thinner stock. Mike Stewart! Hint hint hint...
Thank you, Tom! I like it a lot, but I'd lie if I said I wasn't curious about the upcoming Golok-II. ;) Still, this one is among my favorites in this size range!
Hey man! New sub here. Thanks for your videos. I like your reviews and comparisons. I know these are different, but which do you like better between the survivor and the golok?
Thank you! You'er indeed right about the Golok and Survivor being pretty different, but even so, I'd go with the Golok over the Survivor. Hands down. I don't think the handle is perfect on the Golok, but on the other hand, it certainly is not fantastic on the Survivor either. If the question was instead Golok vs. Crusader, I'd have a much tougher time picking one of them.
Pink G10 thanks for your reply. I ended up going for the survivor. I figured that style of blade fits better with my system based on what I already have. Wish I could get the, both... hahaha. One can dream. Cheers!!!
I can't believe your cutting up that poor dead wood lying on the ground lol who cares your helping break it down for mother nature for the earth anyway its a good thing
I prefer the golok 1 over the golok 2. It's too heavy. I have used my Golok 1 a lot and only held the Golok 2. I was seriously thinking of buying it but just couldn't justify buying it. Wish they would keep the "Golok Classic" in production. I think this new heavier longer version is going to be another "New Coke" failure. But I could be wrong.
Love your video and knife collection but my friend you need to start using the knives correctly. You are chopping with the middle not the end where the power is.
Great rev

Now that's a knife.

Great video, you are a badass lol
Haha! Thank you, Phil! :D
the Fred Knives will one day be known as collector items..... " I have an original Fredrick-Pre-Order Golok" Pm for details...
Heh, wouldn't that be the greatest honour of them all? ;)

I hear you, but I feel more safe doing it this way. ;) There's no arguing, though, about where the most power is when chopping with this blade.
Also work on a draw cut. It helps a lot in using this knife.
