    As another person has commented, this is designed so that you can draw the cable through the fitting that is placed on a ceiling hook, and in so doing adjust the height. So, in most cases you do not need to cut the cable to adjust the height. I understand you wanted to do this anyway as you did not want to wrap the extra cable inside the housing. But, even if you cut the cable it should be refitted the same way as it was before you cut it, threading through the two round holders, this fixes the cable to the part that is then put on the hook, which means any tension or weight is on the outside part of the cable and not on the inner cables that are carrying the current.

    • @boxinggloves1699
      @boxinggloves1699 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes you need to cut the wire, especially for the cheaper white domes as they struggle to stay flush to the ceiling with all that excess wire pushing down inside the dome (it all depends how high your ceilings are and the drop). For example the PS 2014 light is a nightmare! IKEA doesn't cater to older properties, all of their products are made for perfect showroom conditions.

    Why couldn’t IKEA design it so it could fit, via a thread, onto the original rose terminal? Surely that’s more reliable than a single hook (not included). IKEA really need to improve their instructions.

    I think the design of this has changed slightly. It's not as easy to shorted the cable as the the terminal block is only quick release on one side now. It seems designed not to let you shorten the cable easily.

    I have just unscrewed my old light fitting and there are actually 2 sets of live & neutral wires (so 2 x black and 2 x blue). The ikea connector seems to have two spaces for each type of wire, will I be ok to put both blues and both blacks into the ikea light fitting connector or should I use a terminal block for one set of wires? Thanks!

    Hi - nice vid but I am about to throw it in the bin - i've screwed in a hook and attached the connection block to it but now what - i put the rose up to the ceiling and tighten the screw and nothing! It will simply not fasten to the ceiling but just falls away - this is the bit you have missed out in your video

    • @learnasido533
      @learnasido533  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, the key is to find a hook that enables you to get your connecting block as close to the ceiling as possible. To get it touching the ceiling is ideal and will give you the most flush finish. I initially tried with a 'normal' hook (one that you might say looked liked a question mark), but it meant there was a gap of about 1-2cm between the connection block and the ceiling, and I too couldn't get a good flush finish. Instead you'll see I used an old curtain hook which I could screw in and get the connection block much closer to the ceiling (it was more fiddly, hence my inability to film it fully, sorry about that).
      Thanks for watching the video, hope this helps a bit.

    Late to the party. We left our original ceiling rose base in place ,removed the cover , shortened the flex, pushed the fkex through the hole in the original ceiling rose cover , wired the ikea flex in as per this video , screwed rhe original rose cover back up and then pushed the ikea copper dome up over the original ceiling rose and screwed the nipple up.

    I was told by a Ikea staff member that to shorten the length of cord all you had to do was pull the cord up and twist it inside the top cord plate..🤔

    • @learnasido533
      @learnasido533  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks Muhammad, you can do that, but I found there wasn't a massive amount of room for all the wire in the casing as I needed the drop to be so small. Having it bundled inside made the mounting using the hook more cumbersome also. I guess I just liked it trimmed, felt nice and tidy. Cheers

    I want those cheap round paper lampshades but IKEA says they must be 'completed' with this 'Hemma.'
    I don't want a new light fitting, I rent- i'm not allowed to alter the property and don't have the tools or skills to do all this anyway.
    I just want a basic paper lampshade, to hang on my existing fitting. Surely there's a way to just hang a £2 shade without doing all this?

    I don’t know if this is a really stupid question... but we’re fitting the exact same light right this second and can’t for the life of us figure out how the fitting stays up on the ceiling with no hooks or extra parts?!

    • @learnasido533
      @learnasido533  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Certainly not a stupid question. You do need to screw a hook of some sort into the ceiling for the fitting to stay up. This is unfortunately not provided by IKEA with the Hemma light fitting. I ended up using a large curtain hook which I screwed into the ceiling using one of the existing screw holes from my previous fitting. The white plastic part with the connection block on then hooks onto that and takes the weight. Thanks for your comment.

      @@learnasido533 hi there I can't get the fitting to hang flush to the ceiling is it because the hook is hanging to low?

    • @learnasido533
      @learnasido533  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, yeah probably, the closer you can get the plastic connector block to the ceiling the better. That's why I ended up using a curtain hook instead of a normal hook because it was hanging too low otherwise, and the copper light fitting didn't sit flush to the ceiling.
      I also found shortening the wire like in the video helped, rather than curling the excess up in the copper fitting.
      Hope you get sorted.

      @SamButlerUK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Did you figure it out? You likely have your lighting wired in a loop, so each ceiling rose connects to the next light, and has a switch drop. In that case, I recommend not removing the ceiling rose but using it with the flex from the Ikea cord set. The Ikea rose is secured to the flex rather than the other way round, and it is wide enough to fit over a standard UK ceiling rose.

    Where is the guidance when you have a cable feed through in your base i.e. 3 cables to the fitting as is very common? This job should be done by an electrically competent person. Buy a lamp shade not some dodgy new light fitting where you are going to risk electrocution or mess up your house wiring. Also, you gave no guidance for putting in the 'picture hook', and no guidance on tightening the fitting to the ceiling to get the desired hang length.
