    If I remember correctly, there is a Gorillaz cinematic universe, in a sense. The music videos sort of tell an overarching story. They also treated the band members like real people who aged, had fallings out, etc. I think they were even on MTV Cribs and released an autobiography

      the gorillaz lore gets SUPER in-depth, each character could get a full-fledged movie written about them individually LOL. the world building and character development has so much care put into it across sooo many years worth of interviews (tv radio and magazine!), music videos, album concepts... I was so enamoured with it growing up i have a backlog of random gorillaz lore trivia forever embedded into my brain

      And in the "The Now Now" album, when Murdoc (bassist) was in prison, he was replaced by Ace, the powerpuff girls villan, technically connecting the Gorillaz universe to the 90/00's CN universe.

      The music videos do follow the story of the characters. There is usually a wide time gap in between some due to the years of album releases being far apart.

      They’re the 2 permanent members but they cycle through loads of different people because the point of Gorillaz is that it doesn’t matter who the people behind the music are, it’s just the music itself that matters.

      @justsomebody-1665 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      Yeah, Gorillaz isn't a "real" band in the way that they are probably thinking about it. I believe most if not all their stuff was done in a studio and not musicians actually playing together. Like when he asked if they're still together, there isn't really a "they" except the one musician and the animator.

    The Gorillaz music videos are always so great.
    Also I wouldn't call it a cinematic universe per se but the music videos of their albums always tell an interconnected story related to that album.
    The windmill plot continues in the song "El Manaña".

    • @sly_cat
      @sly_cat 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Nah it goes a lot further than just the songs, they had a movie and a tv show planned for adultswim, and murdoc used to have a website he made that had arg-esque hints in it, and recently their newest album litterally told the story in reverse.

    If you ask most Gorillaz fans what their first song was, I can guarantee you that a majority of them will name Feel Good Inc. I know this because this song was my Introduction to Gorillaz, I even went to one of their concerts last year.

    I LOVE GORILLAZ!!! HOPE YOU GUYS LISTEN TO MORE OF THEIR SONGS AND MUSIC VIDEOS!!!
    Edit: Yes there is gorillaz lore if you guys were wondering.
    Edit 2: Here are some more Gorillaz recommendations: Dirty Harry, Saturn barz, Humility, Cracker island(from their newest album), 19-2000, Clint Eastwood, Melancholy hill, Rhinestone eyes. I feel like these are essential( or at least the more popular songs).

    These guys are way ahead of their time with the creativity they showed. Their 4D animation youtube videos for recent stuff like Saturnz Barz is mind blowing. You can spend 30 minutes just in their virtual reality space looking around the entire music video. Also they don't stick to any Genre. They have their own take on many many different styles of music.

    If you're interested in following the Windmill Island plot there is a follow up music video, called El Mañana.
    Wouldn't call it a cinematic universe, but most of the mv's are connected, while other mv's are treated like "the band made a music video for MTV". It's a fun time tho, definitely complicated and a little convoluted.
    Gorillaz was one of the best bands I've seen live.

  • @zilch430
    @zilch430 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

    After this music video, I believe the story continuity continues with El Mañana! Every album and each of the music videos do in fact follow a storyline, and the fictional members, 2-D, Murdoc, Russel, and Noodle, have done interviews and stuff outside of the albums, like the MTV Cribs tour. Also a bit of trivia since you mentioned the cartoon aesthetic: in The Powerpuff Girls Movie (2002), there is an advertisement for a Gorillaz show, lowkey canonizing Gorillaz' existence in the PPG universe. I think this is largely due to the fact that Jamie Hewlett and Craig McCracken (creator of the PPG) are friends

  • @goidman

    The Gorillaz is an animated band, with all the music videos of all their albums basically telling a story of their adventures as a band. On top of this, there are numerous canon videos of the Gorillaz getting into random shenanigans. Also, they're canonically in the same universe as the Powerpuff Girls, so that's cool.
    The music video for the song "El Manana" is a direct continuation of the music video of "Feel Good Inc." so I suggest you guys watch that one next.

    (At 3:08) kind of ironic, that's the lead singer's name (with the 8 Ball dents in his eyes), 2-D.
    The founder and bass player, who now has green skin, is Murdoc.
    The black drummer with the white eyes, is a survivor after all his friends were killed of a drive-by shooting who sometimes possess him taking on the form of a ghost call "Dell the funky homosapien" (that has finally been exercised but the white eyes are still permanent), named Russell.
    And lastly the little Asian guitarist, girl who apparently has superhuman abilities… I think, is Noodle.
    Fun fact: Murdock got arrested one time that Ace from the Gangrene Gang, (Yes, we're talking about the same Ace from the Powerpuff Girls, they're a lot of connections between The Gorillaz and the Powerpuff Girls as shown on The Powerpuff Girls Movie), temporarily filled in for him as his replacement and they are "friends" from what I can tell.

They're defiantly in my top five favorite bands, they also have like short stories too which i suggest you watch aswell!! Also also the characters are: 2-D the one singing with blue hair, russel the one playing the drums, murdoc the one playing the bass and noodle the one that was on the floating windmill

  • @samfisher6606
    @samfisher6606 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Gorillaz is one of my favorite bands! And their albums and such tell a story. The Gorillaz were formed by Murdoc, the bassist doing the hip thrusting, in London. He heard 2-D sing at a night club once and asked to form a band. Then they met Russel, a drummer from the Bronx. Finally, they were looking for a guitarist when then-10-year-old Noodle (she's like 30 now) shipped herself all the way from Japan to their studio and joined the band. That was the girl playing the guitar on the cliffside. That's a basic summation of how the band formed but their story is _wild!_ I'm sure I got some of it wrong.
    Recommendations: Rock the House, M1 A1, 19-2000, Last Living Souls, Kids With Guns, Dirty Harry, El Mañana, Dare, Rhinestone Eyes, Stylo, Superfast Jellyfish, Empire Ants, On Melancholy Hill, Plastic Beach, Doncamatic, Ascension, Strobelite, Saturnz Barz, Momentz, Hallejuah Money, We Got the Power, The Apprentice, Humility, Tranz, Strange Timez, The Valley of the Pagans, The Lost Chord, The Pink Phantom, Aries, Momentary Bliss, Désolé, Cracker Island, Oil, Silent Running, New Gold, Baby Queen, and Skinny Ape.

    I recommend Clint Eastwood, DARE, El Mañana, Dirty Harry, 19-2000 and Stylo! Gorillaz does have lore-they even made a video where the characters show you around their place/Winnebago 😂 2D is the main blue-haired guy, Noodle is the girl on the floating island, Murdoc is the dude who needs to pull up his pants and Russel is the drummer :)

    Most of Gorillaz music videos (and even some concerts) are animated / CGI. Beyond them the only other band i can think of is Daft Punk with i believe it was 3 or 4 videos for their "Discovery" album in the early 2000s. But between the G-Bytes (or G-Bites), their MTVs Cribs, and numerous other music videos the Gorillaz are THE animated band for the past twenty-three years. Tomorrow Comes Today, 19/2000, Rock da House, Clint Eastwood, Feel Good Inc, El Mana, Dare, Dirty Harry, Rock-It, Stylo, and so many others that it's hard to name them all. And at least two that were made by fans based off of animatics that never got turned into official videos like '5/4" and "Latin Simone". DVDs, Books, their "Live" show at the Euro MTV VMAs with this same song, commercials, just so much. This has consistently been one of my favorite bands for over twenty years.
    I got introduced to them in Toonami's 2000 new year music video special which is how i got introduced to Daft Punk, and the CGI lunacy that was Crazy Frog "Axel F" video.

    Theyre a collaborative band group that uses different artists except for 2D (The main singer in this song) but the actual music or rap artists are varied. There also IS a story and backgrounds for all the characters and it even explains stuff music wise (like the random rap bits in there songs. Gorillaz are great, their lineup being animated does lead it to be a bit of a cinematic universe, Feel Good Inc being the prelude to band mate Noodle being ‘killed off’ (she wasn’t but she was briefly replaced by a cyborg copy)
    Personally I like Clint Eastwood, 19-2000 (Soulchild Remix) and Dare. I like Rhinestone Eyes too that has a chill feeling tune.

    It's worth watching Gorillaz's music videos (especially from this era) in the order they were released. There's a loose continuity between the videos (for example, the video for "El Manana" is a direct sequel to this one). Gorillaz was always envisioned as both a musical and visual/film project, and they took this to the maximal extreme during the production of the videos for the albums "Demon Days" and "Plastic Beach."
    It helps that both of these albums are legit among the best albums made in the 2000s. Just banger after banger from start to finish. And the "rock meets hip hop meets old West" vibe is like nothing else out there.

    Stilo, Tranz, Humility, Pink Phantom, are some newer ones or Dirty Harry, Rock the House, Tomorrow Comes Today, and 19-2000, are some older ones with music videos to react to. Also look into the history of the animated band because there is actual lore to the albums and characters. There are 4 original members (to the animated band) and a hilarious replacement during Murdoc's tough times. Also, pay attention to Noodle, because she literally grows up throughout the albums. She's the one on the floating island with the lighthouse.

    Please, you have to listen to more Gorillaz songs, they have several very good ones and most importantly, they are different from each other. If they are from the same album they have similar nuances but still each song hits differently and are very VERY GOOD.
    Some songs from the first albums are not star songs, but there are always particular sounds that just make them work, even if I don't like a song at first, it always happens to me that if I listen to it again I like it more and more. And that's what I love about Gorillaz, they have so many styles and still feel like Gorillaz, they are the only band that I can say that I like all their songs, remixes and collaborations.
    Not to mention the history, drawing and style they have, which I find original, unique and iconic.
    I would like to recommend all the songs but perhaps what works best is to react to the most iconic ones XD anyway you could do an album reaction in that case ;)
    I really like your reactions and it made me happy that you heard and appreciated my favorite band

    My first Gorillaz music video. I remember seeing this back in 2007 on MTV. (back when they mostly played music!) The nostalgia! 👍

    gorillaz had loads of awesome music videos. clint eastwood was their first, and is SUPER early 2000s. DARE, humilty, and saturnz bars are all super dope music videos i think you guys will love (the last two are also a lot more recent, so you can see what bonkers stuff you can do with animation nowadays)

    I love Gorillaz 🦍! Please do more because I’ve heard many of their audio songs but hardly ever seen much of their music videos before as well as other Gorillaz lore videos on the origins of each band member and the band creation and other random stuff so yea haha.

    Gorillaz always feels like a safe pick whenever i want some nostalgic music to listen to. Helped that at the time i enjoyed the animation of their music videos.
    As for a reccomendation, the music video for Kids by MGMT always comes to mind as a very unique music video. Plus the song is pretty catchy.

    Animation in music videos, you ask?
    Gentlepeople of the Sorta Stupid Nation, may I recommend *Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem* . This is an animated musical combining the music of Daft Punk and animated by Toei Animation (which produces Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, and the 1984 Transformer series). If anyone recalls at least 3 animated music videos featuring blue-skinned humanoid aliens, that's what I'm talking about. I didn't realize it was a full "movie" a year or so later.
    There was also the music video "Opposites Attract" by Paula Abdul, featuring MC Skat Kat. (1989 was a fun year.)

    they literally have an universe of every music video, they had a line where you can see the characters younger and slowly grow, a story that continue with the story of every character
    please react to "El Mañana" is the next part of this one and conclude what happen with those helicopters and the flying windmill

    Also, if you're looking for music recommendations, I highly suggest the latest underscores album, Wallsocket! It's an absolutely fantastic post-hyperpop concept album where each song is about the residents of a fictional town called Wallsocket, Michigan. There's only four music videos for the album but the entire thing is incredible. Huge fan of the 'Cops and Robbers' and the 'You don't even know who I am' music videos
