We really just don't care about what others think. In fact, we'd prefer outsiders stay away... there will be less traffic headed down the shore in the summer.
Giving a shoutout to Washington State. It is an outdoorsman paradise. Unpretentious and environmentally conscience. The easy access to the ocean, lakes, forests, mountains, and yes deserts are breathtaking.

I spend time north of seattle, and in pullman and man the second you get on the other side of the mountains the rain stops (and housing prices drop hopefully), and you still get access to all the hiking, skiing and mountain biking, I would love to move a bit east eventually

Moved from California to Kentucky years ago, and much of my family has done the same over time. We love Kentucky and are extremely happy to no longer be in California.
Things KY has going for it include: Red River Gorge is breathtaking. Rich basketball tradition. Berea was an interesting art village/college town. Home to Wendell Berry. Cons: Mitch McConnell, mountaintop removal.
Hawaii’s my home state. Yeah with Great Depression level unemployment it’s clear to me that we need to rebuild Hawaii great again- and the state cannot continue to be purely tourism dependent or food import dependent.
As a New Jerseyan who's shopping around for a new house, I sure wish our placement on the list reflected home prices here. $600,000 is a lot to pay for a 2-bedroom house in a state that is ranked as horrible

Those who picked Hawaii have obviously never lived there before. Great for vacation, but it gets really old after about 9 months. Oahu is tiny it only takes a little over an hour to drive completely around it, and that's taking your time on a motorcycle. If I was going to live there long term it would have to be the Big Island for sure and expensive doesn't describe it well enough. You have to be wealthy or in the military to live there unless you like working three jobs and sleeping very little.
I think it’s hard to pick a best one. Most people have groups of states that are great for various reasons (that sometimes are different enough that they really shouldn’t be compared). I don’t blame her for being a homer and giving props to the state when forced to pick just one.

Saagar didn't say he'd *live* in San Francisco. Just said it was one of the things he likes about California. I grew up in the Bay Area and briefly lived in SF itself. I could come up with a number of positive adjectives for SF; "beautiful" is not one of them, unless we're talking about specific parts like Golden Gate Park or Lands End.
As a Marylander who talks to a lot of DC tourists, I've had to pretend to like DC to not make them feel bad. I hate the corporate, political feel of DC so much. Just not my vibe. I appreciated being in LA and parts of Colorado where people just vibed. I just hate the business suit capitalism that DC promotes.
Maryland should be near the bottom of this list. Maryland is commonly dead last on lists of best places to retire. If I could pick up my house and move it, Wizard of Oz style, I would do it.
I never really got the hate for NJ. Despite being a Masshole myself, It's still in my top ten and I would consider living there if I could. It's got good public transit, some nice, dense cities (some not so nice ones either), beautiful beaches and some decent, but sprawling, suburbs.
Again as someone who has lived most of his life here in Colorado depends on where you go in The Denver Metro area as with most metro areas in the U.S (see Metro Atlanta and more recently Dallas-Fort Worth area ) these are hot desirable real estate markets so it is gonna be pricier to live in the those areas also the trendy ski areas here are also (Aspen,Vail,Eagle,Steamboat Springs etc) are also really realky expensive but despite there is still quite a bit of affordable rentals and real estate here in Colorado but like most places not as cheap as it used to be,but really that is gonna start happening pretty much anywhere some years down the line unfortunately it is inevitable!!!
Hawaii must import everything. High costs make sense. California has lumber, has oil, has crops, has livestock. Everything you need california produces. Californias high cost comes from a Democrat controlled state government.
As a native Californian, glad they see what this state has to offer. I do agree that Kentucky is underrated. That's an absolutely gorgeous state. It looks like those paintings of quaint farms with rolling hills but it's real. For me last place would be Mississippi. Jeez that place LOL
see I’m a native Californian too (San Jose, born and raised and love it despite it’s shortcomings), but there’s a lot to CA that sucks like SF and LA and the people being pushed out of most areas in CA, and I’m not fond of nature.
I think the country can collectively agree that Mississippi has the least to offer in any metric possible 😂 it’s like if you took a Christian Afghanistan, made it go yeehaw, and gave it the most basic, underwhelming landscapes of the south with no more money than the Congo.
Part of the issue is that it is rather subjective. This wasn't a poll where they were asking people to rank different aspects of the states, they were just voting the state up or down with respect to the other one. Some states like, WA and CA in particular have significant cultural rifts internally and you can't really say that Northern California or Western Washington are much like Southern California or Eastern Washington respectively. Depending upon where you're thinking of when ranking those states, you can come up with very big differences of opinion.
I live on Long Island and I will say New York has so much land to the point where almost every region feels different. From wilderness upstate to the beaches on Long Island the state is beautiful. I agree about the city tho.
Whoever thinks Louisiana is a better state than New Jersey probably shouldn’t be allowed to vote. I’ve lived in both. NJ is expensive, but you get what you pay for. And in LA, it’s s*** Edit: Let me clarify that I lived in Princeton, so probably the most picturesque part of NJ. Still, I stand by my claim.
Hawaii is great for tourist. Friends in the military who I have known - who were born and raised there speak first hand of the poverty, high domestic violence rate, and lack of infrastructure (clean water and electricity). I dont understand how Hawaii is first in this poll.
Spent 7 years in Nevada and can confirm it is quite lovely outside of the tourist trap part of Vegas. Being from Michigan and seeing it just above the middle of the pack feels both right and proudly acceptable. I'm in Indiana now and don't think it gets enough love: Indy is an awesome city in my book, South Bend and Fort Wayne are nice towns too, the environment is pretty decent and cost of living is great. Spent a few years in PA and it has no business being as high as 17.

Born in Hawaii, lived in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia and now Kentucky. They all have some positives and negatives. It’s up to you on what you like. I'm a native Californian, and can't deny I've been spoiled with the weather here (except the wildfires, but thankfully my area hadn't been hit). I went to the East Coast during the winter for 4 days and I was miserable. I will say I went to this Costco in a quaint suburb in Illinois (an hour away from Chicago) and was blown away by people's friendliness there. it was unmatched. I went back there twice in a span of few months, and this guy who worked there, that we sparked a conversation with, remembered us & our convo from last time! I imagine this is what it must feel like to live in a small town where everybody kind of knows each other. you don't really get that in Cali (not saying that people aren't friendly but it's more superficial). too many people and the traffic is terrible but the diversity of food, people, and geographical landscape is amazing
We have an epidemic of homeless and tent cities all over the island in Hawaii. Totally unaffordable. I visited Colorado and couldn’t believe that food, was so cheap compared to Hawaii. We pay double or triple what you pay on the mainland. I always had to work 2 jobs just to survive. Traffic is awful.huge disparity between rich and poor.
I'm a hardcore traveler and native New Yorker. We all trash Jersey. So I'm doing a month of traveling just in Jersey. In Newark now, vibrant Brazilian community and has a mini central park designed by the same designer. Next are the mountains a half hr away. It ain't a bad state, so far.

I've spent most of my life in NYC and Bay Area, California, but recently living in N.W. Arkansas and really liking it. Weather changes are a nice change for me, beautiful spring, and people are more friendly and easy going than I'm used to, a lot less stressed than NY and Ca.
The problem with DC (and surrounding area) isn’t the city itself, it’s the people. Narcissism turned up to 11. For all the many cultures in residing there, there’s a surprising lack of culture.
I live in co and I’m surprised by this! I do like most things about co but the housing market/renting market is terrible! So many natives moving because they can’t afford it here.

Lived in Sonoma County for 7 years and loved everything about it. I remember days where I would go hiking in the mountains during the day then go to a night club in SF near the beach at night. So much to do and see.
I think people that trash California are just wrapped up in culture war BS. Yeah, the cost of housing is out of control, but other than that, between the natural beauty and the weather that allows you to enjoy it pretty much 365 days a year, how can you go wrong?? Other parts of the country you may spend half the year hiding in the air conditioning or heat, meanwhile in CA you can enjoy every single one of those days ( as long as it's not on fire). I visited friends involved Nor Cal, and sauce San Francisco and Napa, and also went to SoCal, and spent a week in LA and San Diego. I don't think I could live in LA, but I fell in love with San Diego County and seriously considered moving there. It was cost-of-living they kept me away, looking at the available jobs versus the cost of housing I realized I wasn't quite ready to live in a van yet. Of course now I have a 4Runner, I can just throw a roof tent on it and call myself an "Overlander", LOL.
I live on the other side of the country, we have forest, mountains and beaches of beauty in North Carolina also, we just don’t have the extremely high taxes, it would cost me an extra 20k per year just in income taxes to live in CA. I’m in love with my own property, 33 wooded acres in the National forest with many lake views is hard to beat. The taxes is probably what kills it for CA.

Taxes are definitely insane though, I am not blind to the fact that I am in an extremely fortunate position where I can 100% afford to live here without being bogged down financially. As a californian i know imma be biased but i honestly think we are the best state. Like California is probably the most geographically diverse state. Mountains, snow, rain forests, beaches, deserts, valleys, etc we have it all

Even as expensive as California is, I was out there a few years ago, and did grocery shopping and things like that, and nothing other than gas struck me as being any more expensive than it was at home in Rhode Island. @Brandon Munro Utah is a lot like Colorado--though obviously more conservative, outside of SLC--but even housing in Utah is getting quite expensive. I think housing is getting outrageously expensive everywhere in the US, except more rural areas and small towns (esp. Midwest and Deep South) where few people want to live.
Colorado and Hawaii is very scenic that how those two states are on top and I understand how Hawaii beat us in Colorado they got the coastline advantage, we got very nice waterfalls and mountains side and nice nature environments.

Hawaii’s my home state. Yeah with Great Depression level unemployment it’s clear to me that we need to rebuild Hawaii great again- and the state cannot continue to be purely tourism dependent or food import dependent.
I lived in NJ for 5 years. It's a beautiful state aside from the chemical coast along I-95 which, sadly, is what most people associate with it.
It's insanely corrupt.
It is "the garden state."
But the property taxes... and I'm one of the more pro-tax people in this comment section, but there's a limit.

As a New Jerseyan who's shopping around for a new house, I sure wish our placement on the list reflected home prices here. $600,000 is a lot to pay for a 2-bedroom house in a state that is ranked as horrible

600,000 in Georgia will get you 5 beds and about 6,500 sqft, so I can't imagine paying that much for a 2 bdrm

Those who picked Hawaii have obviously never lived there before. Great for vacation, but it gets really old after about 9 months. Oahu is tiny it only takes a little over an hour to drive completely around it, and that's taking your time on a motorcycle. If I was going to live there long term it would have to be the Big Island for sure and expensive doesn't describe it well enough. You have to be wealthy or in the military to live there unless you like working three jobs and sleeping very little.
Is this a vacation list or a live there list? Is it a list for jobs or for recreation? For rural life or city life? Ranked according to what, exactly?

I think it’s hard to pick a best one. Most people have groups of states that are great for various reasons (that sometimes are different enough that they really shouldn’t be compared). I don’t blame her for being a homer and giving props to the state when forced to pick just one.
I'm _shocked_ I just heard Saagar say he'd love to live in California & specifically San Francisco. I lived in Santa Cruz(4yrs) & San Francisco(6yrs) for 10yrs after school & there's no more beautiful places n the country... but it's odd hearing Saagar say it

I grew up in the Bay Area and briefly lived in SF itself. I could come up with a number of positive adjectives for SF; "beautiful" is not one of them, unless we're talking about specific parts like Golden Gate Park or Lands End.
The public reactions regarding Hawaii's ranking only demonstrates how little mainland people know about Hawaii.
District of Columbia will stay #50 if we can’t even view & tour our beautiful capitol buildings from beyond a fence.. Real “free” feeling..
As a Marylander who talks to a lot of DC tourists, I've had to pretend to like DC to not make them feel bad. I hate the corporate, political feel of DC so much. Just not my vibe. I appreciated being in LA and parts of Colorado where people just vibed. I just hate the business suit capitalism that DC promotes.

I never really got the hate for NJ. Despite being a Masshole myself, It's still in my top ten and I would consider living there if I could. It's got good public transit, some nice, dense cities (some not so nice ones either), beautiful beaches and some decent, but sprawling, suburbs.
She said people are moving to Colorado because it's cheaper.... She is unaware of the cost of living and cost of homes in Colorado.
Again as someone who has lived most of his life here in Colorado depends on where you go in The Denver Metro area as with most metro areas in the U.S (see Metro Atlanta and more recently Dallas-Fort Worth area ) these are hot desirable real estate markets so it is gonna be pricier to live in the those areas also the trendy ski areas here are also (Aspen,Vail,Eagle,Steamboat Springs etc) are also really realky expensive but despite there is still quite a bit of affordable rentals and real estate here in Colorado but like most places not as cheap as it used to be,but really that is gonna start happening pretty much anywhere some years down the line unfortunately it is inevitable!!!
California is such an enigma, similar to Hawaii. Such high cost of living but with immense natural beauty.

Hawaii must import everything. High costs make sense. California has lumber, has oil, has crops, has livestock. Everything you need california produces. Californias high cost comes from a Democrat controlled state government.
Those two things are actually *directly* correlated.
As a native Californian, glad they see what this state has to offer. I do agree that Kentucky is underrated. That's an absolutely gorgeous state. It looks like those paintings of quaint farms with rolling hills but it's real. For me last place would be Mississippi. Jeez that place LOL
see I’m a native Californian too (San Jose, born and raised and love it despite it’s shortcomings), but there’s a lot to CA that sucks like SF and LA and the people being pushed out of most areas in CA, and I’m not fond of nature.
I think the country can collectively agree that Mississippi has the least to offer in any metric possible 😂 it’s like if you took a Christian Afghanistan, made it go yeehaw, and gave it the most basic, underwhelming landscapes of the south with no more money than the Congo.

Its simple. The state you choose to live in and love for you is the Best #1 place for you to be.
Part of the issue is that it is rather subjective. This wasn't a poll where they were asking people to rank different aspects of the states, they were just voting the state up or down with respect to the other one. Some states like, WA and CA in particular have significant cultural rifts internally and you can't really say that Northern California or Western Washington are much like Southern California or Eastern Washington respectively. Depending upon where you're thinking of when ranking those states, you can come up with very big differences of opinion.
I love NJ, it’s the most diverse state and is basically a suburb of NYC or a Philly suburb in south Jersey

I live on Long Island and I will say New York has so much land to the point where almost every region feels different. From wilderness upstate to the beaches on Long Island the state is beautiful. I agree about the city tho.

Hawaii is great for tourist. Friends in the military who I have known - who were born and raised there speak first hand of the poverty, high domestic violence rate, and lack of infrastructure (clean water and electricity). I dont understand how Hawaii is first in this poll.
Spent 7 years in Nevada and can confirm it is quite lovely outside of the tourist trap part of Vegas. Being from Michigan and seeing it just above the middle of the pack feels both right and proudly acceptable. I'm in Indiana now and don't think it gets enough love: Indy is an awesome city in my book, South Bend and Fort Wayne are nice towns too, the environment is pretty decent and cost of living is great. Spent a few years in PA and it has no business being as high as 17.
I was surprised to see Michigan that high, TBH.
The weather sucks in all those places.
I'm skeptical of Indiana--though I'm guessing housing is reasonable and the people are friendly.

It’s a poll and it’s just opinions. It’s fun to do these little meaningless polls but they hold zero merit. Born in Hawaii, lived in Florida, South Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Tennessee, Virginia and now Kentucky. They all have some positives and negatives. It’s up to you on what you like. I’m all about not being in a big city or around one. To me number one would be Florida.

I'm a native Californian, and can't deny I've been spoiled with the weather here (except the wildfires, but thankfully my area hadn't been hit). I went to the East Coast during the winter for 4 days and I was miserable. I will say I went to this Costco in a quaint suburb in Illinois (an hour away from Chicago) and was blown away by people's friendliness there. it was unmatched. I went back there twice in a span of few months, and this guy who worked there, that we sparked a conversation with, remembered us & our convo from last time! I imagine this is what it must feel like to live in a small town where everybody kind of knows each other. you don't really get that in Cali (not saying that people aren't friendly but it's more superficial). too many people and the traffic is terrible but the diversity of food, people, and geographical landscape is amazing

We have an epidemic of homeless and tent cities all over the island in Hawaii. Totally unaffordable. I visited Colorado and couldn’t believe that food, was so cheap compared to Hawaii. We pay double or triple what you pay on the mainland. I always had to work 2 jobs just to survive. Traffic is awful.huge disparity between rich and poor.

I'm a hardcore traveler and native New Yorker. We all trash Jersey. So I'm doing a month of traveling just in Jersey. In Newark now, vibrant Brazilian community and has a mini central park designed by the same designer. Next are the mountains a half hr away. It ain't a bad state, so far.

I've spent most of my life in NYC and Bay Area, California, but recently living in N.W. Arkansas and really liking it. Weather changes are a nice change for me, beautiful spring, and people are more friendly and easy going than I'm used to, a lot less stressed than NY and Ca.

The problem with DC (and surrounding area) isn’t the city itself, it’s the people. Narcissism turned up to 11. For all the many cultures in residing there, there’s a surprising lack of culture.
Montana, Idaho and Alaska are three of the most beautiful states in the US!
Montana is stunning, and it seems to never end. Alaska is gem.
I'd like to add in Wyoming, another natural wonder.
Montana is the sleeping giant. Don't count out Idaho either. Those are two splendid states.
Wyoming is also gorgeous and has the majority of yellowstone and towering mountains all the way from Montana to Colorado.

@@digitraxanr meh, where I lived, a traffic jam was getting stuck behind a log truck on one of those narrow, built for a stage coach, roads with no where to pass for 30 miles.
Thankfully Los Angeles has been pretty good expanding their subway and streetcar system.

I think people who trash on California think California only consists of Los Angeles. There is sooo much more here. Amazing Beaches, mountains, and Forest. Lived in Sonoma County for 7 years and loved everything about it.
I remember days where I would go hiking in the mountains during the day then go to a night club in SF near the beach at night. So much to do and see.
I think people that trash California are just wrapped up in culture war BS. Yeah, the cost of housing is out of control, but other than that, between the natural beauty and the weather that allows you to enjoy it pretty much 365 days a year, how can you go wrong?? Other parts of the country you may spend half the year hiding in the air conditioning or heat, meanwhile in CA you can enjoy every single one of those days ( as long as it's not on fire).
I visited friends involved Nor Cal, and sauce San Francisco and Napa, and also went to SoCal, and spent a week in LA and San Diego. I don't think I could live in LA, but I fell in love with San Diego County and seriously considered moving there. It was cost-of-living they kept me away, looking at the available jobs versus the cost of housing I realized I wasn't quite ready to live in a van yet. Of course now I have a 4Runner, I can just throw a roof tent on it and call myself an "Overlander", LOL.
I live on the other side of the country, we have forest, mountains and beaches of beauty in North Carolina also, we just don’t have the extremely high taxes, it would cost me an extra 20k per year just in income taxes to live in CA.
I’m in love with my own property, 33 wooded acres in the National forest with many lake views is hard to beat. The taxes is probably what kills it for CA.

I would miss California's high amount of Cultural Diversity, the nightlife, and I am also a huge foodie and Los Angeles is definitely one of the top foodie destinations; next to Chicago and New Orleans 😁.
Taxes are definitely insane though, I am not blind to the fact that I am in an extremely fortunate position where I can 100% afford to live here without being bogged down financially. California needs to make some changes forsure.
I don't get these rankings at all Nevada, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Maine have people experienced the weather in these places? Hawaii, California, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, are the best and then New York if you like city life.

You brought two good points. If your wealthy or if your not. Cost defines the best place to live. I love California but it costs to much to live. Since I live in Illinois the state of Chicago and Saint Louis I'm aware of gated venue. These gates are to keep the poor out and the wealthy caged.
As a californian i know imma be biased but i honestly think we are the best state. Like California is probably the most geographically diverse state. Mountains, snow, rain forests, beaches, deserts, valleys, etc we have it all

Being from Delaware I think being ranked 32 is way to gracious. Put us one step above NJ. In fact we might as well be South Jersey the way our local politicians are driving this state into the ground.

Even as expensive as California is, I was out there a few years ago, and did grocery shopping and things like that, and nothing other than gas struck me as being any more expensive than it was at home in Rhode Island. Actually, wine was cheaper.
@Brandon Munro Utah is a lot like Colorado--though obviously more conservative, outside of SLC--but even housing in Utah is getting quite expensive. I think housing is getting outrageously expensive everywhere in the US, except more rural areas and small towns (esp. Midwest and Deep South) where few people want to live.

People don’t realize it takes 15 hours to drive across California with no traffic. California is not just San Francisco or LA.
Colorado and Hawaii is very scenic that how those two states are on top and I understand how Hawaii beat us in Colorado they got the coastline advantage, we got very nice waterfalls and mountains side and nice nature environments.
