  • Just so we are clear - I purchased both of the ePDL's from Old Town. We tested the top speed of the Old Town Sportsman Bigwater 132 ePDL+. Some people said 6mph but with a 205 lbs load (body weight and tiny fish finder) it topped out at 5mph. What happens when you add more weight?

    Top speed under 5MPH is cool but with no weight it’s kind of concerning. Your thoughts?

      For the price point I don't think thats really the case its main benefit is its steam lined and simple. I'll go into more details in another video.@@bigdogford1

      @NavarreKayakFishing I was referring to the speed only every other motorized kayak I have seen is really slow. However I definitely think they could have done more with the kayak for the price point, seem a little to basic to be there flag ship kayak, compared to there competitors, however I don't think there is a better big water kayak on the market as for as the hull goes

    The people who said 6mph are the same bullshitters you deal with on a daily basis. The fact you went out and tested it I have a lot more respect for your findings.

    Seems consistent to what I got. I had it up to 6.4 mph with tide a 1 to 1.2mph tide. When fighting a ripping tide on speed 5 your legs grab way more and are actually assisting. I was able to fight tide at 4mph vs just 3.3 or so on straight cruise.

      That’s good information. I’ve always thought the PDL drive did better when the propeller was fighting current. Gets a better bite. I planned to test it a bit more but I had a two hour delay with the small car accident.

    Speed levels one through three are optimized for standard trolling speeds for various applications. Speed four and five are set up for get up and go speeds. Enjoy the kayak!

    The only thing that would make me reconsider my AP 136 would be the instant reverse and yet judging by the mysterious and coy hints regarding the pedal drive alone ..... maybe the added resistance of the motor nullifies the benefit ... maybe🤔

    Hi Nik. Thanks for sharing that video...informative. Is it just me or does that motor system sound loud?, even at low speed. You mention in the video its quieter than Oldtown Sportsmans 120/136 autopilots (although you didnt specify which, just a generalization)...i own a 136 and I don't hear that motor sound at low, or top end speeds. Your thoughts....

      I’ll go over what I meant in another video so it can be explained better. The GoPro picks up noise different than our ears and I was holding the GoPro within a foot of the drive.
      I should have elaborated in the video.

    I have a problem with putting a motor on any Kayak. The basic shape of a Kayak is all about efficiency, and the ability to move easily under human power. If you add a motor, why suffer all the compromises of a low and unstable hull shape? If you don’t care about being human powered, why not get a pond prowler, a big lithium battery, and a trolling motor, for a lot less money?

    • @NavarreKayakFishing
      @NavarreKayakFishing  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree but there are some places you can’t take the pond prowler.

  • @paulandresen8671

    You can troll at level 2 all day and still show a full battery. For my lake trout trolling its perfect.

    • @paulandresen8671

      And you don’t have to math battery consumption to make it home with pedal drive.

    • @NavarreKayakFishing
      @NavarreKayakFishing  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @paulandresen8671 I feel like a lot of people will be pedaling back from time to time. Myself included.

  • @twowheelslater7112
    @twowheelslater7112 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Cool concept. Kind of the next obvious iteration. For 6K idk man that opens a lot of doors to cool stuff though. I got a 132pdl in the garage. I think for the money I would rather have 2 systems instead of one complex one. If you have a motor on back instead its gonna turn better. with a motor on back If my drive goes I got a motor and if my motor goes I got a drive.
    Seems like 4.5 to 5 is about the limit of the hull unless you put a lot more power to it anyway, so get a bigger battery and save your legs. one question, is it any harder to pedal than a regular drive with the assist turned off?

    • @NavarreKayakFishing
      @NavarreKayakFishing  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree. Yes, there’s more resistance. It appears you spinning the motors while pedaling.

  • @djrtime1398

    The camera picks up noise different than the human ear. What when you experiment for yourself and what you hear on the video are different in your opinion if any?

    • @NavarreKayakFishing
      @NavarreKayakFishing  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      100% true. I didn’t think it was loud when the motor was running compared to other trolling motors. We will test it out more though.

      @djrtime1398 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@NavarreKayakFishing thanks. Also would like drive noise comparison to other pedal drives when solely human powered. Bottom line is looking for quietest pedal drive without motor assist. Thanks.

      I use the Bixpy K1 Angler Pro. I'm in a loaded OT Sportsman 120 PDL (approximate fishing weight with me and gear = 455lbs). With just the Bixpy, I can max out at 4.4mph. If I pedal too, I can get to 5.2mph. Bixpy set on "cruise" speed (6 or 7) I can do 3mph all day.
