Wild animals are just that, WILD! They belong only in the wild, and owning one is just selfish and asking for trouble... eventually. Thankfully, the video was finished with Tippi saying just that, especially after having owned them as pets because she has learnt from experience, especially with the film Roar and Melanie getting injured. Unfortunately, I don't believe they get enough species appropriate enrichment in these small cages. Sure, they're enclosures are bigger than most people give them, but do they get to run and climb stumps and stalk their prey like they would in the wild. I somehow doubt it from what we saw of the size of cages they're in. However, sanctuaries like hers and many others out there now are necessary for all those poor cats that were raised and treated poorly in the wrong hands of circuses and private homes and would otherwise have nowhere else to go. Whether a big cat or small monkey... leave them in the wild where they belong.

There have been people who have successfully taken care of while physically interacting with both tigers and bears for years, and some who have been attacked and eaten by their 'pets'. Only time will tell. I am a firm believer that nobody should ever own any animal they can not physically control, and that would include dogs.

The problem is these animals will only relate people to food and this can get nasty very fast because bears and tigers are not dogs or cats, people don't play with dominant predators like tigers or bears and they don't like cages and bisons are not cows.
I can't say these people don't love these animals but keeping wild animals in captivity can only hurt the animals and people around them.

Ms Hedren is so right. Apex predators are literally serial killers. They have no remorse, sympathy or empathy with their prey. They are made for one thing & one thing only, to take out other creatures as quickly & brutally as possible so they can feed themselves & their young. If you have ever seen a lion kill a zebra, you have seen an animal brutally kill a weaker animal with total disregard for the screams of its prey. Miss Hedren is trying to express just how dangerous her big cats are, how quickly they can attack a person & that there is no remorse &/or guilt on the predator's part if it kills its caretaker. Predators couldn't survive if they had any empathy with other creatures & their suffering as that predator is eating them alive. Predators must be able to kill without feelings & human beings may be just another kind of prey at some point.

The older lady stumbling around her yard with her hands in the faces of bears and tigers really concerned me. She doesn't have these animals to help them. It's not about truly loving and respecting them, or caring about their true needs. It's for her own comfort and happiness, and gratification. She's not taking in animals and keeping them in a habitat close to their own, or trying to help them and send them back home where they can make a life for themselves. She's collecting animals with no thought of their own well being. It seems selfish and all about her. My heart hurts for these animals.

Back in the eighties, I went with my boyfriend to a place in Acton CA so he could fix his boss's Metropolitan Nash. I wandered about outside and came upon an enclosure with a bunch of lions in it. I sat down with my drawing pad and tried to sketch them but they weren't cooperating.
Next thing I know, a woman in a leopard print catsuit (I kid you not) came walking out of a cinder block building inside the enclosure. She mosied up to the fence and we chatted for about half an hour. I never got her name.
Years later while sitting in a doctor's office, I picked up a People magazine and there she was on the cover with Melanie Griffith!

so...has the film maker never heard of animal hoarding? there is no way a single human can have an actual relationship with 20 dogs. there isn't time to train, or even interact with them, let alone deal with behavioral issues or even notice health issues. ad to that that she's literally gone at least half the time to drive a truck. now ad 7 horses on top of that. anyone who has a horse knows that there is no way a single human can handle, train, ride, groom and care for 7 horses appropriately. then ad bears (inadequately contained) and tigers (inadequately contained) and the happy picture painted by the film is in reality a disaster, with a house full of dog feces, equines that are barely trained and poorly maintained, and wild animals that deserve so much more than this lady can offer them. plus, on a truck driver's earnings, there is no way all those animals are receiving regular vet care. it's just bonkers.

If someone with something like 100 different animals is taking fantastic care of them, and gets help when needed so if she's not there the animals are still cared for, I would define her domain as a "sanctuary." But even the best zoos and best managed wildlife areas always have accidental encounters between humans and wildlife that end badly.
Bonnie amazes me and all of the animals caught on camera just look sensational from palomino mare to bear to elderly dog. But I wouldn't want to live within a mile or two of her place. in last clip I have to say that the way she described the personality of the cat was amazing.. it seem that may who own them do see that it should not be done. I don't believe her when she says no one has gotten hurt, something in her face changed when she said it, more likely someone was attacked to the point of no return or so damaged they will never look, live or be able to function the same ever again. That was settled without the court or law getting involved ..

Well she admitted she was in hospital and there were many jncidences. That may be enough for most people to frighten them and see the big cats in a different light, even if nobody got killed.
Don't you think, with the spotlight she is in, that it would have come out, if someone got killed or maimed for life?

I have a degree in animal science and a lot of animal experience. I used to work for a biologist (on the side while I was in college) and had to take care of his menagerie when he went out of town. His safety feature on the bobcat enclosure was broken, so I had to distract the cat with meat at one end as I snuck into the cage to change his water and food dishes. I’ll never forget the moments I was alone in that pen. The only weapon I had was a broom and my own feigned confidence. The bobcat almost always cornered me and tried to attack. I would slap the broom against the wall, yell as loud as I could, and bluff run towards him. Thankfully, I always won. Now that I’m older and creating an animal sanctuary of my own, I feel confident that I’ll never bring home anything that could harm another person. Bringing home a predator does not just put you in danger. It also puts your neighbors, family, friends, and potential employees in danger. I have the knowledge and experience to adequately care for a large predator, but I know that’s a commitment that I would never put on someone else. This means never going on vacation or taking a day off. Even if all goes well, that animal could escape. After being said person that was left alone with a wild animal that was wondering where his main caretaker was…. I personally don’t want the potential risk of someone’s life or their pet’s life in my hands. That bobcat did eventually escape onto a neighbor’s property. They had to use a tranquillizing gun to bring him home. The wound from that shot actually ended the bobcat’s life. Unfortunately, a love and obsession for animals is not enough. Even more unfortunately, training and credentials doesn’t guarantee that an owner is going to be consistent and responsible. Exotic animal ownership is a controversial topic for a reason. Accredited zoos and USDA licensed facilities are important and necessary, so I am not in the mindset that animals in captivity is always evil. I am however very critical on where to draw the line. The first woman seems like a sweet heart that loves her animals. I don’t deny that. Still, I wanted to come through my phone when I saw her bears’ diets. Adequate diets and enclosure conditions are a REQUIREMENT if you are taking on the responsibility of being a caretaker to a creature that can’t speak for itself. If anyone wants to follow along on my journey to bring animal education to the Austin, TX area, follow our instagram! WaywardWildlife ❤

"There's more tigers in the U.S. than in the wild." That phrase is used often, but the problem isn't that there's a lot in the U.S. but that they're nearly extinct in the wild. People saying her animals should be in the wild, it was way too later for that when she got them. She's taking care of them, they're alive, a tiger alive in America at least means that when they likely become extinct in the wild, they won't completely become extinct like the Thylacine. In India and Africa etc, they're all getting poached to extinction. The farmers need the land and the poor people need money.
The U.S. is one of the few nations that not only could take them in and have a wild population (it had all these animals 10,000 years ago) but it's also a nation where poaching isn't a worry. So these animals should be here and there's no reason why there shouldn't be people who meet the requirements to house them like any other pet or livestock. I don't know why this subject can't be approached rationally. If you have the property, the income, pass the background checks, the proper fencing and medical care etc then why the heck can't you have them? They're done in the wild! It's game over there. There's guys guarding rhinos 24/7 with AK47's right now! You think those animals are happy? Elephants are breeding out tusks to survive the poachers...

The only time large exotic animals should be personally owned/managed is if they cannot survive in the wild. Even then, sanctuaries tend to be better for them, with more range to roam and more natural lifestyles at the hands of people who know their needs. Beefalo, buffalo, and other large herbivores ride the line, but they still need a carefully maintained diet and wide open spaces to roam.

I had to train my domestic kitten to stop biting my hands and leg, and of course swatting at me.When she whacks the tiger he thinks that she is playing. She is not effectively disciplining him. There aren't many good ways to discipline a cat other than positive reinforcement. I just would not have a tiger to begin with. When my kitten was rough I would say ow and withdraw, and give him a different toy. This worked and he no longer attacks unless threatened/ playing. That tiger doesn't understand what "no" means, or barely cares.

She clearly understands that they can be "rough" or even dangerous. She can go ahead and give them to the sanctuary she spoke of. Its probably more like a natural habitat there. The demand for tigers mostly encourages inbreeding...or breeding babies for the cuteness factor then kill them because you can't feed that amount of animals throughout adulthood. Zoos are at least keeping books to ensure the gene pool stay diverse when they breed, at least on Europe...

And what do you suggest we do with rescue animals ? And what about cubs, wildlife babies of any kind ? I agree, that it’s wrong to be able to own wild animals, or use them for our entertainment….but what DO with all these ? A well organize and funded rescue Center seems to be all we have offer!! Or kill them ! Because they can’t survive in the wild, once domesticated.

The Bears look to be very healthy and satisfied with there life. But like she cautioned they are wild animals and as such they can have mood swings just like any wild animal. Bless her heart she is living a life that obviously she loves.

I wouldn't keep big cats or bears myself, but I also don't want to completely eliminate someone else's right to do so as long as the animals present limited danger to the public. Many of these animals were never "wild" in the purest sense; they were born in captivity and could not be set free. Along those lines, the idea that the "freedom" the wild offers is something glorious has more to do, I think, with human ideas of lack of constraint than reality. Life in the wild might offer more mental challenges and the ability to fulfill innate instincts, but it also offers very real fighting for dominance, territorial boundaries, death of offspring, parasites, possible starvation, and often a cruel and violent or slow-and-suffering death.

25:03 Funny how we use the term "use the bathroom" so easily when that is not at all what we mean.

The most humane unselfish thing to do is to let them live free without captivity. I can’t believe how selfish Americans have become. More tigers in the US than in the wild is absolutely insane cruelty
