  • Landscape photography vlog on location at Haweswater Reservoir in the Lake District. Without changing my composition I demonstrate the impact that lighting has on a scene.
Here's a link to the blog post that I wrote to accompany this video. goo.gl/aYWox3

Used to visit Hawswater in my walking days, before owning a camera. Lovely spot. I am lucky in that I live only an hours drive from there.

I'm only just round the corner from Haweswater but it can still take me 1/2 an hour to get the because of the slow, twisty roads.

Lucky to be only 20 minutes away, it's a 2 hour drive for me in Co Durham, to get there and I was there, walking High Street, about 3 weeks ago. As I did get there early (06.45) I saw the herd of red deer, which made my day! We both watch Gardeners World as well, me because I like gardening and the missus because she like Monty Don...... I am not going to pretend I understand all the technical stuff you mentioned but what I can fully appreciate is the stunning photos you got at the end! Well worth the wait and early start. Cheers Alan

Thanks Alan - I know you were at High Street, I watched your video, it was great! Thanks for the kind comments about my photos, I really appreciate it. It's interesting that you say you don't understand all of the technical stuff - I was thinking about dropping it from future vlogs and concentrating on the atmosphere and emotion of the location I am shooting.

I think the technical stuff is good, as it makes me want to understand more about my own camera and how I can improve on my own shots. Yes, I forgot, you did comment on my High Street video, old age creeping in I think lol. ATB, cheers Alan

Well Alan if you need a hand getting to grips with your camera or would like to get a better understanding of the basics of photography I'd be more than happy to hook up next time you're in the Lakes. Just give me a shout.

    Hi Chris ,
    Thanks for the reply.
I need to make up a list of good spots to visit in the Lake district .
So I have noted all your Vlogs and hope to drive up there this year whatever the weather.
You have shown so many superb inspiring locations.Been there once before nearly 40 years ago.
    Should be great.
    Cheers Rob

4:18 b-roll of you standing around? With landscape views like that, I'm not complaining. :)

Yes it is amazing how the change of light with the direction, strength and angle can influence the whole scene and atmosphere. The shots were terrific and Haweswater looks a lovely spot to be.
On a map it looks like your near the Old Corpse Road, Mardale ?
    Cheers Rob.

Hi Rob, yeah, not far from the OCR. It's a little spot on the other side of the road with the delightful name Whiteacre Crag. I sometimes try to shoot from close to the Old Corpse Road and include the ruins of the cottages but it's almost impossible to get enough space between them and The Rigg to get a really pleasing composition. I think you need to get a bit higher so it could be a drone shot.
