I have respected Robert Reich for maybe 45 years, and I'm so happy to finally have a series of You Tube talks that are genuinely thoughtful! I'm likely to eventually buy the book on the shelf behind him, too. "Weird" truly describes Vance. Trump taps into genuine threads in our here and now culture. For anyone in this day and age to criticize childless women as childless cat ladies spreading their unhappiness around, and the other things he says about women, is just plain weird. There is no other way to say it. People who deeply despised women said that sort of thing in my father's day - 50 years ago. This society has moved on! It reminds me of the Great Awakening. Many of my mother's ancestors were New England Puritans, and several were leaders of the Great Awakening. Just like Vance, bipolar disorder runs in most of my lines of ancestry, so people acted medieval when medieval times were over. So, the Evangelical camp meetings got lots of people hysterical in the short run, but it didn't last. In the prosperous and peaceful 18th century, medieval Puritan theology just no longer had any real appeal. If you all aren't hip to Vance's book and the hillbilly culture thing, it is clear in Vance's own book that most people around his family didn't actually resemble his family's violent and unstable temperament - and also that neither did his biological father and his family. I'm an inveterate genealogist who got into genealogy trying to trace what happened to my family's mental health. Similar tale of instability going far back. I researched Vance's genealogy, something I'm good at, and it took me a few days. When I encounter someone like Vance, the first question I often ask is, is this person RELATED to me? In Vance's case, I know from the autosomal DNA links that I am related to the Hatfield-McCoy clan, though the link seems to be in northeastern Scotland well before 1700. I read his book seven years ago, and as I had to repurchase the out of stock book I hadn't yet read it again, so I didn't already know that he told us the answer, and I wanted to know if perhaps he descends from the Hatfield-McCoy clan. Most of Vance's ancestry has been well researched, since his mother really does directly descend from the leaders of three of eastern Kentucky's most violent feuds. Altina Waller looked into the Hatfield and McCoy feud in some detail. She examined the culture, the people, and the social and economic factors behind it, or rather, that fed it. The Hatfields seem to have been financially agressive but otherwise they were in tune with the ways of their people. The McCoys, something was really, really, wrong. Most of their immediate kin wouldn't participate in their feud. Most people around them thought Anse Hatfield's economic aggressiveness was, well, weird, and most people thought the McCoys had something really, really, wrong with them. As far as Scotch Irish hillbillies fighting to the death over minor insults to your mother, it wasn't done. They fought over such things, a lot, in court. Fist fights were common among drunken young men. Murder was almost never done. In short, Vance descends from a long line of people who to my mind probably had bipolar disorder, who didn't act anything like people around them. Like most bipolar people, I can intuitively spot another bipolar person across a crowded room, and I've had to trace them down my family tree. We offer these myths and facts to assist students, parents and teachers in thinking critically about this holiday, and deconstructing what we have been taught about the history of this continent and the world. I have respected Robert Reich for maybe 45 years, and I'm so happy to finally have a series of You Tube talks that are genuinely thoughtful! I'm likely to eventually buy the book on the shelf behind him, too.
"Weird" truly describes Vance. Trump taps into genuine threads in our here and now culture. For anyone in this day and age to criticize childless women as childless cat ladies spreading their unhappiness around, and the other things he says about women, is just plain weird. There is no other way to say it. People who deeply despised women said that sort of thing in my father's day - 50 years ago. This society has moved on!
It reminds me of the Great Awakening. Many of my mother's ancestors were New England Puritans, and several were leaders of the Great Awakening. Just like Vance, bipolar disorder runs in most of my lines of ancestry, so people acted medieval when medieval times were over. So, the Evangelical camp meetings got lots of people hysterical in the short run, but it didn't last. In the prosperous and peaceful 18th century, medieval Puritan theology just no longer had any real appeal.
If you all aren't hip to Vance's book and the hillbilly culture thing, it is clear in Vance's own book that most people around his family didn't actually resemble his family's violent and unstable temperament - and also that neither did his biological father and his family. I'm an inveterate genealogist who got into genealogy trying to trace what happened to my family's mental health. Similar tale of instability going far back. I researched Vance's genealogy, something I'm good at, and it took me a few days. When I encounter someone like Vance, the first question I often ask is, is this person RELATED to me? In Vance's case, I know from the autosomal DNA links that I am related to the Hatfield-McCoy clan, though the link seems to be in northeastern Scotland well before 1700. I read his book seven years ago, and as I had to repurchase the out of stock book I hadn't yet read it again, so I didn't already know that he told us the answer, and I wanted to know if perhaps he descends from the Hatfield-McCoy clan.
Most of Vance's ancestry has been well researched, since his mother really does directly descend from the leaders of three of eastern Kentucky's most violent feuds. Altina Waller looked into the Hatfield and McCoy feud in some detail. She examined the culture, the people, and the social and economic factors behind it, or rather, that fed it. The Hatfields seem to have been financially agressive but otherwise they were in tune with the ways of their people. The McCoys, something was really, really, wrong. Most of their immediate kin wouldn't participate in their feud. Most people around them thought Anse Hatfield's economic aggressiveness was, well, weird, and most people thought the McCoys had something really, really, wrong with them. As far as Scotch Irish hillbillies fighting to the death over minor insults to your mother, it wasn't done. They fought over such things, a lot, in court. Fist fights were common among drunken young men. Murder was almost never done. In short, Vance descends from a long line of people who to my mind probably had bipolar disorder, who didn't act anything like people around them. Like most bipolar people, I can intuitively spot another bipolar person across a crowded room, and I've had to trace them down my family tree. Vance's mother had actual psychotic breakdowns, but, the disorder is often mild and vague and often unrecognized. Success in finance and as a politician is one of its symptoms. A particular key clue was Vance's often repeated claim in his book that all through college and law school, he thrived on 3 or 4 hours of sleep a night. I'm perfectly capable of running at the mouth like Vance, and, the man's falling apart in public is just tragic.

That's not entirely correct, that's the white man's version of the "pilgrims" story, the Native American Indian's side of the story tells a different version, for one, they were notactually calling themselves "Pilgrims";

Fact: The colonists were not just innocent refugees from religious persecution. By 1620, hundreds of Native people had already been to England and back, most as captives; so the Plymouth colonists knew full well that the land they were settling on was inhabited. Nevertheless, their belief system taught them that any land that was unimproved was wild and theirs for the taking; that the people who lived there were roving heathens with no right to the land. Both the Separatists and Puritans were rigid fundamentalists who came here fully intending to take the land away from its Native inhabitants and establish a new nation, their Holy Kingdom. The Plymouth colonists were never concerned with freedom of religion for anyone but themselves.
Myth #10: The Pilgrims and Indians became great friends.
Fact: A mere generation later, the balance of power had shifted so enormously and the theft of land by the European settlers had become so egregious that the Wampanoag were forced into battle. In 1637, English soldiers massacred some 700 Pequot men, women and children at Mystic Fort, burning many of them alive in their homes and shooting those who fled. The colony of Connecticut and Massachusetts Bay Colony observed a day of thanksgiving commemorating the massacre. By 1675, there were some 50,000 colonists in the place they had named New England. That year, Metacom, a son of Massasoit, one of the first whose generosity had saved the lives of the starving settlers, led a rebellion against them. By the end of the conflict known as King Philips War, most of the Indian peoples of the Northeast region had been either completely wiped out, sold into slavery, or had fled for safety into Canada. Shortly after Metacoms death, Plymouth Colony declared a day of thanksgiving for the English victory over the Indians.
Myth #11: Thanksgiving is a happy time.
Fact: For many Indian people, Thanksgiving is a time of mourning, of remembering how a gift of generosity was rewarded by theft of land and seed corn, mas murder of many from gun and disease, and near total destruction of many more from forced religious and cultural assimilation. As currently celebrated in this country, Thanksgiving is a bitter reminder of 500 years of betrayal returned for friendship.

What is it about the story of The First Thanksgiving that makes it essential to be taught in virtually every grade from preschool through high school? What is it about the story that is so seductive? Why has it become an annual elementary school tradition to hold Thanksgiving pageants, with young children dressing up in paper-bag costumes and feather-duster headdresses and marching around the schoolyard? Why is it seen as necessary for fake pilgrims and fake Indians (portrayed by real children, many of whom are Indian) to sit down every year to a fake feast, acting out fake scenarios and reciting fake dialogue about friendship? And why do teachers all over the country continue (for the most part, unknowingly) to perpetuate this myth year after year after year?
Is it because as Americans we have a deep need to believe that the soil we live on and the country on which it is based was founded on integrity and cooperation? This belief would help contradict any feelings of guilt that could haunt us when we look at our role in more recent history in dealing with other indigenous peoples in other countries. If we dare to give up the myth we may have to take responsibility for our actions both concerning indigenous peoples of this land as well as those brought to this land in violation of everything that makes us human. The realization of these truths untold might crumble the foundation of what many believe is a true democracy. As good people, can we be strong enough to learn the truths of our collective past? Can we learn from our mistakes? This would be our hope.
We offer these myths and facts to assist students, parents and teachers in thinking critically about this holiday, and deconstructing what we have been taught about the history of this continent and the world.
