It does not have to be pasted to the fabric. It can be a separate lining same size as outer fabric but made of lightweight vinyl or faux leather that you find in any big box fabric store near the upholstery section. It makes the purse water resistant. I found this out when I took apart an old purse. A separate lightweight vinyl will look better because it will not pucker like the pasted fabric.
