Yay! This tutorial may be 3 years old but it is THE BEST quick, to the point, and helpful tutorial out there! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!
What an excellent tutorial on how to update the firmware. I must have watched 5 other video here on TH-cam and nothing came close to your clear and precise instructions on how to do this. Others left information out and/or the video was poor in that they did not always have the camera facing what they were describing. I am completely new to the DSLR world and had no idea what I was doing. I'm deligted to have found your channel.
Steve, thank you so much for this video. I'm a computer idiot and just purchased an ancient D700 that still had its original firmware. I scratched my head most of the morning trying to figure out how to do the update from printed instructions with no luck. Two minutes after watching your video, my camera was successfully updated!
I've always managed get someone to help me in the past, the last time by calling Nikon for help. I'm technically challenged to say the least. However, this time I'll do it myself. You take all of the mystery out of it. THANK YOU!!!!!
Steve. Can I say a BIG thank you. I have spent all afternoon trying to update my Nikon D750 Firmware but I couldn't save the download onto SD card correctly. Then thanks to one viewing of your very informative video I managed to do it straight away. Thanks again. Brilliant video
I have 2 Nikon d810 cameras that I’ve never done a firmware update on. I just watched this video, I ran the updates in both cameras, and now I feel like a technical guru. Thanks Steve👍😉
I regularly use TH-cam to learn things and yours was just the easiest experience I’ve ever had. I’ve subscribed but don’t really use cameras much but might start!
great video, thanks Steve. On the D500, the Nikon instructions states that if yours is a much older version, you may need to repeat the upload the new version twice to complete the update. It tells you the versions, I just can't remember, anyhow my update went without a hitch.
Thanks Steve, I was having problems with updating firmware z7 11 from 1.4 to 1.5, my mistake was trying to copy the bin file to DCIM on the card. Thank you so much for the clear concise tutoral.
Great video Steve, one more thing to look out for when attempting the update is to make sure that the tiny lock switch on an SD card is sitting in the UNLOCK position otherwise the bin file will not be able to be transferred to the root menu of the card. As always very useful upload, thanks for sharing.
Hi Christos I went through all the steps including the unlock of the SD but was given no option to update when I opened the firmware version tab? SD was also allocated as primary slot?
@@MichaelduS7 which camera? If it is a D850 take off the XQD and insert only the SD. Also make sure that you move the bin file onto the root menu of the card and NOT in any of the existing folders.
Thanks for the help, Steve. I used my SD card in my D500 and to no avail, but when I used my XQD card which is my primary card, I was able to do the update with no more problems.
Had just updated my D850 to Firmware version 1.03 yesterday when I got your update notice today of the 1.10 update. Very nice succinct tutorial on updating which can be tricky.
Thank you Steve. Very helpful. I have a D500. After downloading the firmware I was unable to open the download, nothing happened after double klicking, so I copied the whole download onto the memory card, after which, for some mysterious reason I could open the download, found the correct file, put it on the card under the main directory and deleted the other directories of the download. However, what probably did the trick for the successful update and what I didn't know on my first attempt, was selecting the right card as the primary card slot, in my case the SD card, that I normally only use for JPEG. I couldn't use the XQD card because I still had many photos on it. Then the camera recognized the update. So I think your remark about selecting the right card as the prime card slot saved the day! Thanks again!
Steve, on my Nikon Z6 I can transfer photos to and from my XQD card inside the camera, so why doesn't it work to drag and drop the bin file to the root directory of the card in the same fashion? Seems like a joke to have to pull the card and put it in an external card reader when the camera itself is a card reader?
I did exactly these steps but my D3500 does not see the update file, it seems. I do not see the new "update firmware". I put the bin file in spread in the main folder. I also have 2 folders, Nikon and D3100, after my format.
Hi Steve, Your video on updating firmware is right on. So far, you have given the most detailed and concise and EASY to follow update for something I needed to do with my Nikon. Awesome. Keep up the great work.

Thank you Steve. Didn't know it but I was still using 1.00 firmware on my D7200. Note; Windows users, double click the .EXE file, which will create the folder that contains the Bin file.
Hi Steve, I downloaded the firmware update for the Nikon D5500 on a Windows computer. The file name is F-D500-V102W.exe however when I double click to open it to get to the BIN file as you suggest, nothing happens. It doesn't open. Any suggestion? Thanks
Scary stuff made not-scary. My Z8 is fresh out the box and I have not even attached a lens yet. But have now successfully updated to 2.0. My first Nikon since the F4 from the old days. Thanks Steve.
Please help! My D850 is not upgrading from v1.10 to v1.20. The camera stalls at the "Do not turn camera off" screen and the status bar stays empty. Based on this video, I changed the Primary Card Slot to SD (glad this was a key point in the vid), but it still doesn't work. The .bin file is in the root directory. I've updated Nikon firmware before, so I'm sure I'm doing everything right, but it's not updating. I reached out to Nikon Support over a week ago with no response. I don't know what to do. I recently spent a lot of money buying a CFexpress card and reader, and I won't be able to use them if I can't complete this update...
I wish I had an answer. I can tell you it takes a few moments sometimes before the bar starts moving, but if you've waited a bit there's something else wrong You could try to reset the camera first and then do the update, but you'll lose your settings (of course, you can also use the save / load settings options in the setup menu to save a bin file with your settings you should be able to reload after the update - should being the operative word).
@@backcountrygallery Thanks for the suggestions. I reset my camera and tried again, but it still doesn't work. I've used multiple SD cards and even switched lenses and batteries to see if that might help, but still doesn't start updating even after waiting 10-20min... If I get a resolution to this issue, I'll post it here.
Had some issues but finally managed to update my D850 - the problem was that the file was located BELOW the DCIM like in your video but once I placed it above it the update worked. I had to try it several times because when I did format the XQD Card a folder with Nikon D850 existed below DCIM and because its a European camera I wasn't sure if there is a slight difference. Blood pressure started to rise but after several loops I arrived at the desired result (C 1.30 / LD 2. 016) Mission accomplished!
Thank you I understand better. I am also technically challenged. Even showing the video of you transferring the memory card to the reader is all helpful. That's how difficult it is for us non technical people. And you did make it easier because the last video the person spoke but did not show visually what he did.
What if when you attempt to update firmware, that the option is not given in download center? I have had my D3500 since January, and have never checked to see if it needed an update. attempted today because I was told that the issues that I am having with Snapbridge may be caused by a need for a firmware update. The only tabs that are in the download center under the 3500 is Manuals and software.
I don't believe Nikon allows user updates for firmware on the D3000 and 5000 series cameras. You may have to contact Nikon if there's an update and send it in.
Yes. A good question. My newish D3500 is working OK but I wondered how it does firmware updates. I went to the download center myself when somebody commented about better firmware being needed for the D3500's video autofocus. So, nothing possible on firmware by an owner is quite a surprise... I can't imagine why. Steve, could you please pin this dialogue or update your description, or whatever, so I can find out the latest news for the D3500. For me it is not urgent. I will keep the address of this page .../watch?v=KEWQ4GCbWuI
Short and to the point. Only one thing like to mention. In my case before starting the update, Camera was smart enough to tell me to replace the battery because one I had in was on low level.
Thanks Steve, after watching a different video I still was unsure of doing this correctly, but you made it an easy 'follow along' and it worked as it should, on my D750!
Steve, mission accomplished - I can't thank you enough for this great presentation - straightforward instructions. I updated my D7200 - your instructions worked like a charm. Thank you - Sylvia Grummitt
Hi Steve! Just watched your video. I have a Z50 and I have never updated the firmware as I was rather nervous about doing it myself. If I were to update the latest firmware update 2.10, do I automatically get all the previous updates or do I have to update each one separately? If so, has it got to be done in accordance with the sequence of their release? Thanks
On a rare occasion (only once that I can recall) incremental updates were necessary. Normally, you can just download the current version of the firmware and install it without worry about which version preceded it. If there is an incremental firmware install required, Nikon is really good about notifying you on their website download page.
Great explanation for the update. But I have a problem.First I download firmware update for my camera windows user.Format the card and then put the update bin on my card. But when I connect my camera and put my sd card with update. When I click firmware version it s only shows two options done and delete files for the update. No sign of the update.Ehat is the reason for that? Thanks
Quick question: So can I do the firmware update using my SD card (set to primary slot in my D850) and just insert the memory card directly into my MAC or MacBook Pro, which both have SD slots? Or, does it have to be via the XQD card and, a card readrer?
Thanks for the info. I do have two questions; When you say memory card I assume you mean whatever type card the camera takes like in the case of the Z9 would be a CF Type B card. Is that correct? Secondly, if you are updating firmware in camera and lenses can you download all the .bin files at once, or is it better to do each update one at a time? Thanks for your input.
Great tips. Can you please let me know if I can turn VR on or off on my D5500. I just bought the 70-300mm AF"P" VR DX lens. I updated all the firmware in the camera C1. 02 L2. 009. I do not see "Optical VR" On/Off option in the shooting menu. There are no buttons on this lens. If I don't see it, is it safe to assume it defaults to OFF? I don't mind as I use a tripod but would be nice to use it if hand holding a shot. The manual says the D5500 is compatible after a firmware update. Thanks!
Quick question for you Steve. I have the D7500 and have not done any firmware updates for a while. Can you just jump to the most recent version? Or do you need to do each one sequentially? Thanks! Great videos!
Steve I have a problem I'm trying to update my frimware on my nikon d3100 but the frimware is not a bin file what do I need to do please help me. I've had this camera for 9 years
Thanks again, Steve. I just reviewed your video again as a refresher so I could update my D850 from C 1.10 to C 1.20 which will allow me to use the new CFexpress & XQD cards in my XQD slot.
Great vid!. Unfortunately for me after following your guide my bin file refuses to transfer to my card , I get a circle with a line through it and it jumps back out. Any tips? I'm using a brand new card reader and a brand new mac if that's of any importance. Thanks.
Grabbed 1.10 for the D850 earlier in the week, and I'm glad I did. Fixed a problem with my Tamron lens not focusing on the edges and in the corners of the frame, and above all, opened the wifi. That means I can now use one of those vastly superior 3rd party apps to control my camera!
@@Soupcan13 I've tried a few but the one that worked best was Camera Connect & Control from the android app store. After last week's firmware for the D850 the app started working with it as it had on my previous camera. It is a paid app, but as I recall it was only $5 and well worth it.
@@Soupcan13 Actually I just tired it out on my D850 and there doesn't seem to be an option for remote video. When going through the faq the dev stated: "video recording only works with usb connection. The camera does not allow it over wifi." Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
@@bodkinsbestphotography I wonder if you mapped the record function to the shutter button(instead of the smaller record button) if that would make a difference. I've seen people use the pixel tw 283 to do this. Basically the camera will react to the shutter trigger button being remotely pressed but not the smaller record button
Thank you for that information! Is the D7500 Camera just as good as a D600 or D7000? I have all three and cannot for the life of me which one to get rid of? Any suggestions!
I wanted to update my D850 firmware. The version I had was 1.03 and the updated version is 1.10. I did everything as suggested - downloaded the updated version on my laptop and transferred the BIN file onto a formatted SD memory card. Inserted the memory card in my camera and selected Update-Yes. Then nothing. I did it a few times and still wouldn't update. Is there anything in my settings that's preventing me from updating?
Thank you for your video. I did not know about going to the BIN File. I did what you said, and I was able to update my Nikon D5000 and D5500. Thanks again, Walter.
Good and clear explanation, as always! Thanks. What I missed: the update on the 2nd line in 'Update'. It reads LF which is Lens Firmeware, I assume. Would have been nice if this was explained as well.
For all of those having problems with not finding the update option after following all the steps you saw in the video, try to copy the bin file IN / WITH the folder named 'firmware'. So the folder should be copied (with the bin file within) not just the bin file alone.
Steve, Thanks for your video. But my camera does not update at all. My camera is a Nikon d7100 and I bought it last 7 years ago. I did not bother to update it at all. Now it doesn't work properly with the Pocket wizard in manual mode so I did try to update as you said. But it doesn't update. If you have time please advise me what I should do. Thanks!

You can use the slots on the Mac, no problem.
Thank you so much I struggled with this one until you showed me how to copy and paste the .bin file
Hura-:)😊
Great information. Where would the usb cable connect to download photos to a laptop?
I've had this camera for 9 years
My camera doesn't even show an update option.
Thanks again, Steve. I just reviewed your video again as a refresher so I could update my D850 from C 1.10 to C 1.20 which will allow me to use the new CFexpress & XQD cards in my XQD slot.
Super video!! I don’t have a card reader so is there a way of copying the bin file to the card in the camera?
Thank you for a very clear and concise video on updating the firmware. Worked perfectly and didn't waste my time.
I always run this live as I do it... excellent as ever thanks Steve, Bruce
Hey cool, have you tried out any 3rd party remote apps for the D850?
@@Soupcan13 I've tried a few but the one that worked best was Camera Connect & Control from the android app store. After last week's firmware for the D850 the app started working with it as it had on my previous camera. It is a paid app, but as I recall it was only $5 and well worth it.
@@bodkinsbestphotography nice! Thanks for getting back to me. I've been looking for something to use as a remote start /stop for video recording
@@Soupcan13 Actually I just tired it out on my D850 and there doesn't seem to be an option for remote video. When going through the faq the dev stated:
"video recording only works with usb connection. The camera does not allow it over wifi."
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
THNX A LOT SIR , IT WORKED PERFECTLY , I DIDNT THOUGHT MY OLD NIKON D3200 WAS CAPABLE OF DOING ALL THIS
I know it seems easy, but for us technologically impaired people it was a HUGE help! Thank you very much!!!
Hello. Can you somehow get back to the previous version of the firmware? My Non-Nikon battery does not work after i made the latest update! 😭
Tremendous and clear presentation Steve - easily the best on YT. Upgrade done - all thanks to you 👍
Excellent explanation and presentation Steve. Thank you for the great content! Best to you, Rick
Thanks!
Thanks so much!
Your videos always straightforward and helpful. Thanks so much.
How long does the update on the Z7 roughly take? I heard a clunky noise and the rear screen went black... nothing else the last 15 minutes.
Not too long - not 15 minutes. And I don't recall a clunk during the process...
Good and clear explanation, as always! Thanks. What I missed: the update on the 2nd line in 'Update'. It reads LF which is Lens Firmeware, I assume. Would have been nice if this was explained as well.
Steve, success with my D7500. Followed your instructions exactly...easy as pie. Thank you. Les
For all of those having problems with not finding the update option after following all the steps you saw in the video, try to copy the bin file IN / WITH the folder named 'firmware'. So the folder should be copied (with the bin file within) not just the bin file alone.
This worked for me, thank you!
Steve,
Thanks for your video. Thanks!
Thanks Steve, just updated my z6 to v3.00 I would have been lost without you thanks a lot
Hey Steve I have had my Nikon Z9 for a few updates that I have NOT put on my camera, Im kinda spooked on doing this, Do I need to download all the past updates or can I just do the 3.00 updates, Thank You Jeff Hobbs
Thanks Steve, great to see your subscribers increase over the years. Well deserved :)
Thank you!! I've wanted to update my firmware for a while now but never got around to it. I almost didn't do it because I thought I didn't have the right firmware downloaded. I was able to update firmware no problem. Thanks again!!
Hey Steve , I have a D610 Nikon and only use an IPad now. What do I use to download updated firmware etc.
I have an oldie. D5100. When I pull up the firmware option in the menu it gives me numbers then says OK. There is no option to update firmware. I made sure the file was in the correct place and the SD card was formatted. Any suggestions?
Hi Steve! Any videos on tips and tricks for photo storage and organization?
can i past the NEW FIRMWARE FOLDER THAT I JUST DOWNLOADED IT FROM NIKON WEBSITE using the A/V OUT CABLE

It has to be done with a card reader as far as I know.
Thanks Steve, this is why I've purchased your ebooks previously - great step by step instructions!
Hi.
Please tell me how I can save the old firmware on my nikon Z . to the memory card ?
Very useful video Steve. I hadn’t thought I was an ‘IT idiot’ but, Nikon’s instructions for updating their camera’s firmware certainly made me feel like one. Your video has clarified the process perfectly. Not as scary as Nikon would have you believe. Thank you.
stranges? in my camera i don,t have update and delete frimware update files sosultions?
Hi Steve. Trying to upgrade D7000 with using USB-C Hub with Hard Drive Enclosure, Type-C Docking Station & Stand for Mac Mini M1 with SATA, USB 3.0, SD/TF Card Reader and USB 2.0 Ports for New MM M1 Laptop (Silver for Mac Mini 2020) for my M1 iMac and a Sandisk extreme plus, 80mb, 32 GB but nothing is updating. I have tried multiple times. I have also tried a read/write card but both get the error 'unsupported file'. This camera has is still on all versions of 1.02 and I am frustrated. Is it the card reader, the cards or my M1 Mac? So frustrated any help would be appreciated thank you.
Steve, thank you. Have had problems updating my D500. Watched your video and now sorted. So simple in the end (when you know what to do! )

@Steve will you be updating your review of the Nikon Z cameras for wildlife now that the new firmware has been released? Thanks
Thanks Steve. Have you tried to update camera firmware using the SnapBridge capability?
I’m looking through some of the comments regarding the updated firmware. I have a D810 that has an update available but because of not being able to go back to an earlier version I’m a bit nervous in doing the update. Anyone had any luck in correcting the non Nikon battery or Sigma AF lens issues yet? I also use non Nikon batteries as well as Sigma lenses and really need the AF option.
It worked for me after watching this video.... C1.10(FW) and LD 2.017
Thanks Steve..
took some figuring out but so far so good been a little confused with this updating but you made it real simple to understand
Thanks Steve. I could successfully update my Firmware for NikonD5200. Good work.
I've been trying to update my Nikon coolpix B500 and I followed all the steps. once I put the SD card with the update firmware into the camera and go to update I get no update option.. Please help
Thank you, for providing this and your many other tutorials. I have found then helpful and clear!
In following your excellent tutorial, I noticed that I have failed to incorporate the previous updates in my Nikon D850. Does one have to update the previous versions before updating the current one?
Hi, i' not getting the Update option at all in the Firmware version screen. what should i do now?

Hi Steve , if firmware are update to new version. By effected of out focus(Back Focus) Body Problem, can it be auto calibrate ?
I tried doing as you explained but did not got the option to update in my camera
Normally how long does it take for the update to finish. My D850 has been "updating" for at least 30 minutes. I don't remember other updates taking that long
How did it turn out? Mine was about 90s on D7200
