Why the full face and goggles? How fast could they possible go? Seems over weight and over kill. You would thinkthey would want to get rid of nything not needed.
bmxlivetv Really?! WOW!!!!!!! That is faster than I thought. Much of what they wear is part of the tradition of the sport having sprouted from Supercross. I must admit that I still think its overkill protection. I am not calling the sport something by suggesting this either. Look at all other cyclin disciplines. The only one using full face is DH with even faster speeds and in an environment full of hazzards. Honestly, I think a standard park helmet and sunglasses would be sufficient but then, it just wouldn't look BMX. Something else that has been bugging me is why aren't BMX racers riding carbon fiber bikes? Weight and stiffness are clearly important in BMX racing and aluminum is great but it simply cannot compete with a carbon frame. You could literally knock off a couple pounds which is huge on a race bike. Is it because that is too pricey to sell to the demographic that buy race bikes?
The riders use the most protection possible, due to the nature of racing. Riders hit each other, slide out and get caught up in crashes, and the helmet is one of the best pieces of protection there is. A skate style helmet is not enough protection for street riders, but is what is accepted as stylish or cool. But head trauma is neither, so the riders use the best equipment they can to stay safe. Carbon frames are just becoming readily available in BMX racing, but the light weight of the frames is made more for traditional BMX, vs SX style tracks. There are riders that do use them on SX tracks, but the technology has only become good enough for the aggressive nature of SX racing in the past year or so.
Liv A I'm not arguing the safety aspect but most pro cycle racing events have the participants taking every weight advantage they can. Pro road racers wear very minimalist aero helmets and there have been serious injuries and deaths due to accidents. I/m more into mountain biking but I much rather have an offroad accident than road because road riding is going to be faster and the ground is hard.
Awesome race action! #bmxracing

The riders can reach speeds up to 60 km/h (just under 40 mp/h) down the start hill - sometimes even more.

bmxlivetv Thanks for being cool and responding with intelligent replies rather than being an ass.
