How do we have to irrigate our pistachio crops when my farm is rainfed? What are the options and ways to irrigate? In this video we tell you how to do it in the best way.
If your plant is rainfed, if you have a farm that is rainfed, at least during the first three years you have to water. From these first three years the plant starts to be self-sufficient and irrigation is less important. Then it can be considered a rain-fed plant, a 100% rain-fed plantation.
A rainfed plantation can be considered when we have at least 300 L per square meter of water falling from the sky.
When do we start to consider an irrigated plantation? When at least we are contributing more than 500 cubic meters, because less than 500 cubic meters per hectare can be considered a rainfed farm with irrigation support.
You can irrigate, either through drip irrigation or by flooding or by adding water with a tank that can be transported by a tractor with a trailer.
Flood irrigation has some of our customers but it is not the most appropriate irrigation. First because it takes a lot of water, then because it compacts the earth too much. It is true and true that the people who have the irrigation by flood is because they have not thought it convenient to make an investment in drip irrigation and maintain irrigation by flooding other crops, whether corn, alfalfa ... But it is not the most recommendable irrigation for pistachio cultivation.
From IberoPistacho we amend drip irrigation more than flood irrigation. We think that with drip irrigation we will not only dose the water, we will apply the necessary water at each moment of the cycle, but it is also a good vehicle to carry the nutrients, with the necessary nutrients in each cycle.
It is one of the questions that I often ask, I recommend it because we are saving water, because we are preventing weeds from proliferating easily and above all because we are facilitating the work around the plant because there is no kind of obstruction.
If you do not make a good maintenance clear that you can get stuck drippers, but if you do proper maintenance at the end of each irrigation there should be no problem. The technology has advanced a lot, the drip irrigation now is not what it was 15 - 20 years ago.
The minimum contribution for a pistachio crop to be viable must be about 300L per square meter per year. All the contribution we make beyond this amount is a contribution that will come phenomenal to the plant, which will make it have a greater development and therefore have more production.
In the summer we from IberoPistacho recommend a watering cycle that runs from April to September. In the month of April we recommend two irrigations, in the month of May we recommend three irrigations, in the month of June also three irrigations, in July and August we recommend four irrigations, that is, one per week, and in the month of September we recommend the Pampered also that in August and July. As the cycle progresses, the water need is greater and we must contribute that water that the plant will need because we have more evapotranspiration and that means we have to contribute more water. Each watering that we contribute at least must be between 25 - 50 liters per week. This will depend on the moment we are watering how the earth will be and also how the environment is, because it may have been raining. But then the average is this.
