    How wonderful to be able to see this footage of one of the artists I love most. Thank you!

    apparently the film maker had repeatedly asked Degas if he could film him and each time was given a very firm 'no'. so, as the painter at this time was nearly blind (i suspect being guided down the street by his female companion) the film maker waited in a cafe for Degas to pass on his usual walk - and captured him on celluloid for posterity.
    amazing, isn't it - seeing such legendary figures on film.

    The film clip is absolutely legitimate. ..Degas walking along the Boulevard de Clichy, from the film Ceux de Chez Nous by Sacha Guitry. C 1914... A still photo from the film is in the book, DEGAS, by: Robert Gordon and Andrew Forge. Thank you for posting!

      hi! yes as you'll know i'm sure the footage is part of Jean Renoir's ancestor to record impressionist and post-impressionist painters - he also filmed Renoir and Monet, which i've also uploaded to my channel. the sculptor Rodin at work was also filmed. :)

    This is a gem. I wonder if, back then, they had Parisian autograph hounds getting Degas' signature.

    • @JohnRaymondHall
      @JohnRaymondHall  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, i wonder when autograph hunting began - we have to be content with these Degas autographs! www.artsignaturedictionary.com/artist/edgar.degas Degas didn't want to be filmed and the cameraman hide in a cafe on the artist's daily walk - as Degas had terrible eyesight in old age he didn't notice he was being filmed.

      hi Apulia2001
      this footage is lucky to have been captured as Degas refused to be filmed and the camera man sat in a cafe past which he knew the artist passed every day on a walk and, as the artist was nearly blind, he knew he'd be able to film him unnoticed - the first paparazzi! the woman walking near Degas helped/guided him on the walk.

      +Sash D apparently it was secretly filmed - Degas did not want to be filmed and the cameraman lay in wait along the artist's daily walk - he was practically blind so he didn't notice being filmed. glad you like this too!

    This is not only Edgar Degas in the street, but he is filmed by Sacha Guitry a french director, actor, writter.
    I'm sure about that, it was presented at an exhibition at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

    Hello,
    I am writing to you because I saw this video you posted on, Degas and others like it on Monet and Renoir showing the original footage of the painters in life. I would like to have a contact from him to find out how to find the source or archive from which they can be downloaded or purchased.
    I'm waiting
    Best wishes

    ha! that's not Degas. He had several doubles/look alikes that walked around Paris to confuse people who wanted to bother him for interviews and other silly distractions. Degas was very cleaver and had a whole fleet of people who worked for him taking care of his daily needs (food and cigarette runs, alcohol runs, newspaper runs etc;)

    yes, eccentricity - a characteristic not uncommon in painters, van Gogh ... .

  • @zthetha
    @zthetha 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    It would be so nice to think it was Degas... but I doubt it was. There is a vogue for spotting celebs in old footage - one guy saw Oscar Wilde frolicking about the Eiffel Tower in a white suit... hmm?
    Then again why did this photographer set his camera up for this mundane scene? Just to catch a few nonentities waddling about? Film was too precious for that, so maybe it was Degas after all. We know he was fascinated by photography... and women in various states of undress so maybe the girl with him was about to disrobe. Shudda shot that!

      +willie otoole
      i saw that supposed footage of Oscar Wilde at the Paris Expo - only seen from the back and at such a distance it could have been anyone - no reason to suppose it was writer at all.
      this footage i think is real - the film maker shot two of the Impressionists - Renoir and Monet (Degas was better called a Post-Impressionist) and the sculptor Rodin - the film maker for all four films was Sacha Guitry (French stage actor, film actor, director, screenwriter, and playwright) and his project here was called 'Ceux de Chez Nous'.
      Degas did not want to be filmed and as he was blind by the time of the project Sacha Guitry ambushed him on his usual daily walk to get the footage he wanted
      wikipedia outlines this project to catch these famous painters on film in their article called 'Ceux de chez nous (film, 1915)'
