*Most of these people are CHOKING and about to break into tears whilst reminiscing their unemployment. It really hit me deep. Loss of time. Loss of life. Loss of youth. Loss of untapped potential. Grief of loss. Rejection. Denial. Removal. Expulsion. Dejection.*
Broke my heart watching this.. I can feel their struggle because I was in that position too.. :'(
I was unemployed for 10 months. Each job application felt like a heavier attempt each time, to the point where i just gave up. But out of nowhere, by the grace of God an opened door came. I’ve now been able to earn a small rice bowl. Nothing big or fancy, just enough to get by.
I know times are extremely tough now; 10 months felt like an eternity for me. I urge each and every one of you to see this valley as an opportunity to grow resilient, and to be thankful for even the smallest things; to have a roof over our heads, to eat a warm meal and sleep with bellies filled with food. I know it’s hard but trust me, once you start focusing on what you have instead of what you don’t, you can focus on growing what you have. Not all growth has to be financial; upgrade yourself and position yourself to receive better opportunities. God bless you

Hearing all the stories of rejection, it is really tough handling them and you will doubt yourself. Hope everything can improve and we can look back at this period as a time when we stayed strong!

Apart from being hungry, the stigma that comes with unemployment is also hard to bear.

When I graduated from Uni around mid 2016, I couldn’t find a job as well. Eventually I was offered a very niche (and interesting) contract role but it was only $1.4k. Took it and jumped ship after half a year. It was another contract role only around $2.6k. But again, it was similar to my first contract which was very niche and highly demanded. After half a year again, FINALLY GOT FULL TIME JOB!! I think I’m doing ok now :)
By the way, the 1.4k contract role was supposed to be purely administrative (print documents and do filing). I took it because that company and department is very niche and has a lot of potential. Luckily, my manager gave me more high level things to do since I’m Uni grad and hired another admin to do the admin haha

Bro I feel you. I graduate in 2015 and I cant find any job back then. I went to recruit express and receive a shitty job to for 1.4k. I quit the job in 2017 and I took a leap of faith to join a trainee engineer pay which is 1.8k. But after graduate to be a licensed engineer 2 years later, my monthly pay is 5-7k on my first year as a full pledge engineer. I think its just a part and parcel of life. Dont give up and continue to work hard despite the rejection

@@attorneyonwheels Aviation. Surprising we are doing well during the cov19 period although there's retrenchment here and there. Electrical engineering is good. If you can enter the power industry e.g seraya power, the pay there is reasonable. Downside its at jurong
Everything happens for a reason. And usually for something better, in hindsight. May those who are still unemployed, find their ideal dream job soon!
Thank you so much for sharing. I think people really really needed this video now at the time of this high unemployment rate. Everyone that is going through this phase try to find things to be grateful. The food you eat, the bed you sleep, the people you can talk to. Being positive can help you sail through this stormy weather. Nothing is permanent, your situation will get better. But you must, I say again must always stay grateful, thankful and think positively through all these times. If not the rejections will keep bringing you very low to do stupid things which you will really regret later....
Back in 2017 when i graduated from uni, i faced the same situation. Applied many companies but not alot gotten back. Went for interviews but was not offered any positions. Then, something happened to my family member, i stopped job hunting and stayed in my previous job (that was underpaying me). After their condition is better and more stable, i started job hunting again at the start of 2019 and set target that I really need to job hop soon. In mid 2019 i found a job that is paying me what I deserve. Just keep applying, don't give up!
Build on your networking. Very often a good word is all it needs to get you an opportunity.

Never give up and always be positive! My gf got retrenched recently and managed to find another job in the same month. Don’t blindly apply for jobs but instead focus on your experience and target the jobs that are relevant. If u need some income, just find some part Time jobs first but at the same time keep looking out. I wish everyone good luck
I remember being retrenched during covid and I was jobless for 4 months. Was the worst time of my life and I was also a fresh grad out of my job. It was my first job and my first retrenchment lol. But somehow, you will survive, it’s tough but keep trying and try to tailor your resume to certain fits. Money always can earn back, so don’t worry too much, focus on getting what you can get . Try to stay afloat, I was eating bread for one of my meals at some point plus I didn’t come from a silver spoon background haha. Keep upgrading and be patient. Life is short I also learnt a lot in my period of unemployment, asking myself to be more empathetic with myself and others. Don’t discriminate those that are jobless instead, help and empower them!

I didn't get a job until I was 19 it was temporary job I was unemployed for a month got a job burger king worked there for 1 year and 6 months. ( I quit) I was unemployed again for about 5 Oct to feb. I've been at my new job for about 7 months
This video needs to be watched, especially by all the teenage to 23 year old twits in the United States, who are under the delusion they are all going to be influencers on Instagram. And people wonder why depression, mental instability, prescription drug use, etc. is up 10,000 fold over the past 2 decades.
Unfortunately too many young people don't seem to realize they are not special, they are a dime a dozen and the "career paths" they have chosen are not essential and can be replicated by many. I feel for them.
Technology has advanced so much in the past 4 decades that so many people and many more to come, will be obsolete.
Dont forget the cancer that is tik tok.

Agree with what one of the girls have to say- if you constantly work hard and upskill yourself , you would be employable and yeah don’t give up !! Hunting for job is never easy during this period but many have done it so don’t blame the economy entirely for it
The hardest part is the responsibility- either you are an overworked father, mother wanting to buy daily groceries, filial daughter, son doing stater ups, student doing part-time jobs- all of the above needs money, but it’s hard when you’re laid off.
I hope it will get better for all of us.
I was retrenched back in 2016 and was jobless for 13 months... there was a period of time of 7 months was not even called up for interview... to survive I drove Uber/grab and did delivery jobs... it’s was really a tough period and my entire savings was wiped out... thankfully I managed to get a job and 3 years on, I’m in the best financial state of my life ever and debt free... just hang in there and do whatever it takes to survive... life is a roller coaster and it’s always gonna be ups and downs... we just have to ride it thru

For fresh graduate don't expect salary to be high.Sometimes lucky and sometimes not.Employers will always think about themselves first.Whats important is to get the 2 to 3 years experience first so you can move on with much better salary.In that 2 or 3 years you can add alot to your resume with regard to the skills and responsibilities you have been assigned.This will make you a much more attractive candidate.
For those lost job mid career, is quite hard, but the important thing is to get back to be employed asap.Sometimes not good for mental health also.If prospective employer offer low salary then just reject and move on.While its important to stay employed, also not ok to be exploited with low salary.Hang in there guys!

I'm a fresh graduate and I'm unemployed for 3 months already. I'm scared that things will not be good. But I'm still waiting and hoping for an interview next week... There is anxiety and depression that I maybe not good enough. I'm not going to give up everything

There's nothing wrong with working in McDonald's or NTUC to keep yourself afloat while constantly looking for better opportunities. The job industry needs to change its mindset about employment gaps as well. Stay strong.
Investing and diversifying your portfolio with stocks, crypto currency and forex trading is the wisest thing to do and really profitable.
Diversifying is the best key to investing.

I was an investor of stocks but sold all off and invested on bitcoin, I’ve been doing well .
My roommate has all these tough luck types beat. He is 55 and a former convict with a lot of arrests on his record when he was young. When employers find this they pass him up for employment. He has been looking for a job for the last 10 years with literally 100's of job aps filled out. These are not high paying jobs at all, but minimum wage type jobs. He rides people to their destination at half or less than half what they would pay a taxi. He has quite a few customers by word of mouth. That is how he gets by. Necessity is the mother of invention.
For me since young maybe sec school , I've always saved coins. No matter how tiny it may seem just save and don't use it. It started when I was broke AF and I wanted to buy a packet of Maggie mee, and I couldn't find like 20,30cents to complete the purchase. I starved and avoided canteens in school. We were really broke back then. Received help from those help groups. Family of 7. It was very tough growing up. Ever since then, coins really helped me alot when I became broke. Now things are much better. So, don't give up, things will get better eventually.
There are some people who don't even wake up. Damn.

Graduated mid 1998. Unemployed until end 1999. Will never resign without a job ever unlike young people nowadays.
There is a quote, "You worst day at work is still better than your best days in the unemployment line."
This is what I remind myself everytime I have a tough time at work; that I should be grateful that I even have a job to begin with.
Recently I had a colleague and we all found out the company is giving us an extra bonus this year which is out of ordinary. I was overjoyed, however he snarkily said "why is the company only NOW decided to give us bonus, and not the years before?" I was so aghast by his unappreciative attitude and his sense of entitlement.
Really? What about the Japanese lady that killed herself because of being forced to work more than 100 hours a week? That is still better than being unemployed?
@@vlabla9063 I'm talking in the general sense, not for those type of situation obviously. In Singapore, luckily we are protected by the law. In my previous job from a previous company, they were doing some unethical things includding staff overwork and many more which was why I quit. But before I quit, I made sure I gave the company a chance of at least one year then when I'm ready to call it off, I made sure I have a backup plan and are already applying for new jobs.
Now, I am in a good company, but even then I see people who likes to complain despite the company being quite fair and giving a lot of benefits. Ofc its not perfect, but compared to my first job where I see how they treat people, this company is quite good and ethical.
I don't agree with that quote. If you have some savings to cushion, being out-of-job and looking for a new one really gives perspective about your career. When you are stuck with a mean boss and horrible company, you can get tire out while missing out on your potential.
And yes, I agree that colleague of yours is really bad, he is not going to ever be happy in life. I know people like that too, they tend to get jealous of other people's achievements and over-exaggerating their own competence.

@@Nabila-dx8xf I'm not talking about not working. I am saying being unemployed is not the end of the world like some people think. If you make good use of your unemployment times, you can benefit from getting a better perspective of yourself and your career.
There is a a very strong taboo about being unemployed in Singapore. But it shouldn't be.
I was unemployed for 6 months. Upgraded myself with relevant courses. I sent 50+ applications. Got 3 interviews. And eventually 2 job offers. My advice is to upgrade yourself. That's the only way you stay competitive in the market, shows to employers that you are willing to learn.
2 to 6 months unemployment is normal. 7 months to 2 years unemployment is not normal.

Don't give up. I was in a similar situation in 2009 during the GFC. Dark moments, but looking back years on, this could've been the best lesson for me professionally.

In bad times, it is better to have a job than no job, some $ rather than no $, to be healthy rather than ill, to have some food rather than no food on the table. Be grateful for the things we do have, for the people in our lives and for the many blessings that are given to us which have been taken away from others. Manage your expectations, lower your standards and focus more on your needs instead of your wants. You will realise that you have a lot more than other people in this world.
It’s been very difficult. I got a demotion through a restructure after working there for many years with stability, then finally got another job in sales only to have a forced resignation shy of a year then moved to a small start up which was very toxic to which I left after only a month… been unemployed for 2 months now & am stressed about finances. Luckily I have a support system but I do feel anxious & low as I just want to find the right fit & be happy.

I noticed that when the pandemic is here many people are willing to take up jobs that they don’t really like but before the pandemic many people only take up jobs they liked. If you have a job be grateful.
I relate to this so much it hurts watching this video. But at the same time, i feel relieved there's people out there thats has the same situation like me. Regardless, I manage to get accepted to a different career path recently and i couldnt be more happier. Keep trying and dont lose hope 🤗

Ever since covid, i can’t find any jobs and i’ve been jobless for 3 months plus during the CB period. But thank god i managed to get a job as a Swabber. But i still have to think what I’m going to do after my contract ends (Finding job and etc.)

Someone i knew, applied to at least 100 per WEEK, with just around 0.3% reply rate and 40% interview chance. He was twice rejected because over-qualified...
if it is because he is over-qualified. Actually that is something he can work upon. He could consider a pay-cut during this time as a temporary measure.
I am pretty much an adventurous person and have been teaching at international schools since graduation, moving from city to city, country to country every year or so. I love the freedom of being able to experience living in different places and never had to 'settle down'. I have never feared unemployment and would quit my work even before looking for the next one all the time. The choice had always been in my hands.
Covid hasn't hit me that hard as it did for others because I am still employed with a decent pay, but I must honestly say that I am scared. I have never really felt this terrified before.

@@keirarayne5480 Honestly, I don't really understand the need to stay at a place that you know is unsuitable for you just to show some kinda 'loyalty' virtue in your resume. Sure, loyalty is good, then how about risk-taking, critical thinking, self-confidence, adventurous and the loads of qualities that you show when you dare to take the first step to leave your comfort zone? So far, I feel that if a company needs to hire, they hire the best fit who is capable of doing the job well, not just because someone showed 10 years of loyalty to their previous company.
Of course, this is a difficult period of time so you might want to be extra cautious in switching a career path. Then again, if not now, when?

It's all about networking and cable nowadays. My friend who studied Petroleum Engineering now works as a policy maker at AirBNB because he couldn't get a job in Oil and Gas. My friend who studied Psychology is now an Engineering firm manager because his dad knew a guy inside. Sad reality of today
I trapped on comfort zone 33 years old,, single,,,gamer ,,otaku ,, yes i have job ,, yes i not have finacial problem but still my heart feel sad
Im actually crying rn and trying to stay positive for the sake of my family and friends. As a transgender malay , aftr quitting my ft job about a year ago and covid came in , its really really hard for me. God knows how many interview i went and i didnt get a callback and the recent smtg happened to me they told me i got the job all and start induction next wk , suddenly few days i got a text msg saying that they got miscommunication n decided not to hire me , that really hit me hard ... till tis day im still trying so hard to stay positive ... idk how long i can hold on tbh

pre-covid19 when I was looking to transfer jobs with 5 years of experience under my belt, I had also applied for over 100 jobs and only ~10% got back. this is the reality of the job search process, covid19 or not. be open, upskill so as to stand out from the crowd, and persevere. get a friend to vet your resume if you have to. all the best. tough times dont last, tough people do.
I also feel is very unfair as a Singaporean our salary compare to foreigners sometimes they’re much higher than us even now I still can see 1.6K job around. Living cost in SG is high but government didn’t help us to maintain a standard amount. So more foreigners come to SG we as Singaporean will be suffering with low salary and high living cost.
I was also unemployed back in 2020. I completed my NS back in October 2019 and had been job searching ever since. I have applied a lot of jobs from JobStreet but the their pay offer didn't meet my requirement most of the time. They even told me that the pay I was expecting was impossible to meet. I started becoming desperate and lowered my expected pay as COVID was slowing creeping in to SG and was super worried that I would still be jobless by then. Fortunately, I finally got an offer that met my initial expected pay so of course I took it and finally got employed back in March 2020 and just a week after that Circuit Breaker happened but I wasn't worried anymore... Thank God for that.
So yeah I was unemployed for 5 months before I got a job that met my requirement.
the world is always changing... as the world changes you also have to change in order to survive.
$8000 debt for a young person fresh out of school is tough.
My years of being unemployed due to a couple of mental health issues have landed me in debt of close to $150k. And with a dwindling CPF balance, I now worry about keeping up my mortgage payments for my flat. None of this helps with the recovery of my mental health. It's like a vicious cycle. I need to recover asap, so that I can work and earn an income to pay off my debts and keep a roof over my head. Yet the added stress puts an unnecessary strain on the recovery time.
They're young and getting rejection for jobs. I'm old. I can't imagine my rejection rate by the time I recover. Stress now over recovery from my mental disorders. Later stress again over finding employment, increasing my chances of relapsing. Never ending story.
Rasa nak mati weh pergi iv punya bnyk but didn't get any of the position :') Some recruiter even say "So u tak belajar apa2 ke dari previous iv?" "I think you are not ready and need to learn more" while I've been trying my best fighting with my anxiety all the time. When she say " Your self-worth is not detected by what recruiters see," that make me cry a little.
There is light at end of tunnel. Keep going feed the positive dog do what it takes, let it come, let it be.
As a foreigner living in Singapore for years, I wonder why these people are not getting jobs. There are lots of vacancies, I applied to hundreds of them, still nobody gets back. Probably only 3-4 companies got back to me saying they're only open to Singaporeans and PR. Moving back to my country isn't favorable as it's not safe there + racism, and staying in a current job isn't a better option either as the company is a sinking ship. For Singaporeans, really, there are lots of jobs for you out there, if you're not picky about it.
In the US especially CA , it is extremely hard just to get a call back, even with a degree I lost a friend due to how Awful rejection percent its 99%

ironically, companies are not keen on hiring me as an intern (i’m 28 and unemployed for 10months)
It is such a tragedy; I still find it extremely hard to accept the reality that I’ve always been a good student, working hard to enter Jc and then to Ntu, just to end up having less job prospects than peers from “less prestigious” schools
Been there...unemployed for 8 months after company closure...sent resume after resume to 100 company but less than 10 get back and only 5 interview...with exp and apply for jobs thats in the same field not getting a job i was wondering is sg market really looking for workers or something else...honestly the struggle to get by for a day is not easy...like she said i thought my resume was ok...doesnt matter the upgrade...all u need is a chance...one opportunity...to be employed...
It is easy to get a part time job while hunting for the career you wanna take.. but some people are unable to humble themselves to do those "lowly part-time jobs" because of pride and fearful of judgement from peers and families.... zzzz
some people I know now have office jobs due to the fact they worked part time during their schooling period, they didn't get those office jobs waiting around like these people.
try to stay positive, workout alittle (since you are free), keep applying , take lesser paid jobs, restart/refresh (u have to start somewhere trust me);
I had the same exact experience many years ago when i was jobless for almost 1 year; i had countless rejections and failed interviews, even the same answer like to "your grades are not what we are looking for" this kind of answer.
Alot of times, The recruiter usually knows dogshit about who/what they are missing out (alot of them are not even your direct managers), so dont give up, and keep trying.

While I myself faced this earlier in the year, I feel for them however this seems like propaganda to make youngsters accept low paying traineeship jobs for at least 2 years.
Back in 1998 it was the same campaign to drive wages down, and I was there accepting my first job at less than 1k. I'll tell you honestly it takes 10 years to even get to 2.4k in a specialist job. We just don't want to pay livable wages is all, nor do we want a livable country - and that's sad.
@@GreatChicken2 I know right. Ive also been stagnant in a specialist job for over 10 years, still haven't reached 2.5k 😂 losing to cheap labour across the border.
well, what full time job wants someone with no experience except with a piece of paper? the people in the video never mentioned whether they built a network that could get them jobs either.

@@dt4654 It's the catch 22 of the job market. You need to start somewhere but people are not willing to hire newbies.
Therefore there will be a glut of inexperienced job seekers and career converters who have basically spent needless money and time in education, because all expertise will be imported.
There is no shame. Nothing personal.
Yes I apply 100-200 and only 11 interview and there is some time when I also think would not get a job but while working you want to quit and find other job again
Take a job even if it's paying alot less than what you're worth & know, keep in mind, it's temporary , it will not last forever.
Sad to see the youngster nowadays hard to find jobs during this period time.
Even worse the Senior citizen like me cannot find jobs such as Temperature Screener or Safe Distance Managements Officer require no experience all the job seeker like Job Studio, Recruit Express have no courtesy to even reply or call applicant. Very disappointed.
How can the Govt help like Seniors who want to work but cannot find??? Need money to support daily expenses like paying loans bill groceries etc.

The employers are basically spoilt for choice on choosing the best fit for the JD. The employers ain't interested in training a new staff when there may be a FT readily available.
Think of the consumer buying local or from amazon.
Amazon is cheaper, more choices.
Will you still try to buy local knowing that product is not the ideal one?
You said it yourself. If local Singaporean grad cannot differentiate themselves from FT from India then why should companies hire them? So try to find a niche.

Its just like dating. You are searching for a partner you can build a relationship with. Then after some time, you break up, and date another person. When you are single, enjoy the freedom, don't think you need to get attached quickly, you can work on yourself, get a six pack, read some books. In time you will find someone suitable. Boom. It's like dating.

The fastest route is check which industries are doing well in the pandemic and then tailor your resumes from there. Obviously you don’t go applying for offline retail, event management, tourism related jobs because these industries are badly affected!

hopefully singapore doesn't have those jobs that only give interviews to meet company policy because of things like internal hiring or their employees recommending people in their network for the job posting before it reaches job street.

After doing tons and tons of research online. how the world operates in terms of employment, critical thinking, creative ideas and something non related etc i like to share my thought.
Always have something to fall on. Meaning having a PLAN B. Something that you passionate about for a start. Stop relying on jobs.
Jobs not only become an option, it becomes a necessity. This are our mentality which needs to be unscrew. Don't depend something to much always have a plan B then start scaling.
Nowadays, a person juggling 2-3 maybe 4 or more work stuff which are not at all our workscope or non related at all. Put some thought into it why?
Being an adult, is freedom. But its the opposite. And its up to us to turn things around and stop relying on others.
It's just like a person who is single, and the friends say sg man can't comprehend cuz the person is just so good- highly educated, humble, great exposure to the world, shown resilience and have loads of life experiences and good hobbies + able to take good care of own wellbeing. The friends keep saying overseas partner suits better, with such qualities that the person has.
Likewise, good companies are like the partner looking for the good ones. It's talking about the survival, $$$, reputation and efficiency etc at work. If an A grade foreign student is available to build a company, why pick a B- grade local?
Sadly, those who are complaining about FT that I've encountered, are usually the incompetent ones.
The competent ones see the worldview and have exposure, working really hard to stay in the global platform.
Spend less time complaining of the 'unfairness', use the time to build your portfolio and raise your own value instead of ranting the world. Hard, but it speaks to many strawberries.

The girl whose advice is that if one is not employed, it means one is “not employable” and that we should keep training till we’re employable. She likely has no liabilities/ responsibilities and is living with her parents. There are people without functional families/ parents and have to support themselves, or have to support children and elderlies, as well as pay rent/ mortgages at the same time; and these are on top of other responsibilities such as student loans etc. I hope what she says makes her feel better about herself for being in just a ‘traineeship’. But I hope she understands that her advice (which she stated in an arrogant manner) is not practical or helpful to many who could be less privileged than herself.
A top tip for you all esp if you are young, start calling your class mates or people in your position or friends. Meet up as a group virtually or otherwise (no need to be grand or over dinner spending money, can be a meeting in a void deck or someones house etc), get the networking, discuss new ideas to perhaps to be self employed to generate revenue, groups can also comfort you from doing stupid things, support your mental state (you would be surprise that alot of people are in your position), if your mental state is stable you will be able to think more constructively and positively esp with group support and discussion you will soon find a way out together. Try it.
Is this a reflection of ourselves when profit margin is so important that we hire foreigners to replace our own and our action somehow affects our next generation. When your self worth is questioned, headstrong my friend, headstrong.

It true even before covid I send about 100 plus only about 20 plus get back and only 10 or less for interview
its BS when you realised, they all didnt choose the available job because of hard work and low salary. in times like this, having a job is better than non. yet they want to feel privileged and choose high paying easy job. macdonalds not hiring ? fyi. they have been understaffed since covid till now and is hiring every single day non stop and still not enough. singaporeans have to wake up fast to understand the bs behind foreigners taking jobs away from locals is stupid. they are working in jobs that you do not want. so end of the day, there is no such thing as no job available. its just jobs you choose not to want.
How exactly will flipping burgers and fries for the next 2 years help a Communications grad with securing a decent paying job when the economy recovers??? Hard work and lower salary in this current environment is fine but it doesn't mean you take up any menial job that does not develop your skillset or improves your CV to companies.
@SPZ23 pride doesn't pay bills tho.. in the event that you really need the cash, working at mcd as a part timer is better than sitting around and waiting for a better job to come by.
