Sigmunds kvæði, eldra

Birgir Djurhuus skipar Sigmunds kvæði, eldra saman við Dansifelagnum í Havn. Kvæði er eitt av elstu føroysku kvæðunum við evni úr føroyingasøgu og er í trimum tættum - við ymsum løgum og niðurløgum til hvønn táttin. Upptøkan er gjørd í Reinsarínum av sjónvarpinum hjá KvF í 2017.
Sigmundur Brestisson vil doypa føroyingar til kristna trúgv. Hann roynir fyrst í Gøtu, men Tróndur gandar illveður á hann. Aðru ferð roynir hann í Svínoy, og doypir Bjarna og hansara menn. Triðju roynd ger hann í Dímun. Honum eydnast at koma upp á oynna, men bóndin herjar ímóti. Endin er, at Sigmundur vinnur og drepur Dímunarbóndan og alt hansara lið. Til hesar tríggjar tættirnar hava ofta verið brúkt ymisk løg; annars hevur verið óvanligt í dansi at skifta lag mitt í einum kvæði - nú eru summir menn byrjaðir eisini at gera so við onnur kvæði, ið ikki eru í tættum sum Sigmunds kvæði, eldra.
Í dansitíðini skipar Dansifelagið í Havn vanliga fyri barnadansi í Norðurlandahúsinum fríggjakvøld kl. 20:00, og vanligum dansi í Hornahúsunum, kl. 22:00. Sí nærri á / danshavn ella www.danshavn.org
Birgir Djurhuus is the lead singer of Sigmunds kvæði, eldra (the older ballad of Sigmundur) together with Dansifelagið í Havn (the Faroese Chain Dance Association in Tórshavn). The recording was made by KvF (the Faroese Broadcasting) in 2017. This ballad is one of the oldest Faroese ballads with content from Faroese history, the ballad is in three parts - with different melodies and refrains for each part.
Sigmundur Brestisson wants to convert the Faroese people to Christianity. He tries first in Gøta, but the chieftain Tróndur casts a spell, sending bad weather to stop Sigmundur. His second attempt, in Svínoy, is successful and he converts Bjarni and his men. Sigmundur's third attempt is on the island of Dímun. He manages to come ashore on Dímun, but the farmer there fights against him. In the end, Sigmundur wins, killing the farmer of Dímun and all his men. The ballad is in three parts, and often each part has been song with mutually different tunes. This is quite uncommon in Faroese ballads, but in recent years people have done this even for ballads that are not really divided into parts as this one.

There are probably around 1% / 500 people who regularly are active within the Faroese chain dance culture - but there are quite a few more that know a few (or many) ballads without being very active anymore. Also this cultural heritage has been used a lot as inspiration in music (rock, pop, folk, classical music), in literature, and in arts.

is the chain dance only practiced in private (as seen in the videos) or can it be seen at public Events too?

This is only semi-private :-) It is a local dance association, Dansifelagið í Havn, where people regularly come together to dance. There are around 16 such local associations that meet more or less frequently. There are also some public events, as well as it is used sometimes really in private, meaning for birthday parties or weddings.
