  • Watch to learn how Rose-Helene Spreiregen’s maturity and determination saved her grandmother’s life, and her own. In 1943, at the age of 12, Rose-Helene and her grandmother used false papers to flee Paris on an overnight train to the south, where they hoped they would be safer. Rose-Helene acted as the adult, telling her grandmother to feign sleep while she faced the German and French police checkpoints alone. She later recalled, “I don’t think I was ever more scared.”
Hear Holocaust survivor Rose-Helene Spreiregen’s experiences in her own words recorded on July 20, 2022. First Person is a monthly hour-long discussion featuring a live interview between journalist Bill Benson and a survivor and including questions from the audience, available on the Museum’s TH-cam channel.

Congratulations and thanks for your testimony
I was born in 1947 in France. This is part of my history, although we are born from a catholic family. Nevertheless I share the shame of French collaboration and applaud the courage of our friends in the Resistance

This history of 1930 into the mid-40s' holocaust is so important to have chronicled, so we learn and never repeat. Thank you, Rose Helene, and all for your sacrifice and bravery.

Thank you for sharing your story and having the courage to speak out. I agree, it is never over, until everyone has been rounded up! So many lives are gone now and who knows what or whom is next. I live in fear every day. Thank you again.

Thank you for sharing your story. I cannot imagine how horrible things were at that time for you and all of the Jewish people. The Antisemites are so ignorant. How could they talk so terrible to children? I am happy that you survived, along with your grandmother and cousin. GodBless You! I am in Wisconsin!❤

This is such a shameful past, my daddy was born in 1944, my mother was 1943 and I am so humbled and so grateful that we did not endure such horrible conditions and some will never be known. Never again anywhere I do not like torture or bettings or hatred, it’s my honor to hear your story. So many lessons to learn from every persons story. With great respect and love.

Thank you for sharing your incredible past. I've been through enough to believe that the best part of the past is that you can leave it behind you for the most part. 💕 I'm so sorry that a day exists where the beautiful sister I see was ever treated,..words do not, the heart doesn't.. Thank you for sharing your life it was my pleasure meeting you. ❤️
My deepest prayer is that the heart of man that committed such atrocities is equally willing to love, agape love 💞💞💞

Usually I'm commenting on the strength of the parents on these first person interviews. For you, it was your own strength and wit. It reminds me of myself in a less dangerous situation as the child of a drug addict taking care of myself and siblings from a young age. Obviously, it's not even the same situation or danger, but maybe the same resilience. You were and are so incredibly strong. A hero for sure. Your tenacity and will to survive and thrive is admirable. I can still see your strength to this day in your eyes. You are so beautiful and admirable.
