  • In this video I relax with some local landscape and wildlife photography while convincing myself to let go of perfection in my work.
With a camera bag that feels like it's filled with bricks, a Nikon D750, a Tamron telephoto Lens and a Nikon wide-angle aid me in practising my photography.

Many years ago I thought about doing photography professionally. But, the pressure of operating a business took all the fun out of it for me. So, I decided to just do photography as a hobby and I've enjoyed it ever since. I don't try to get the perfect shot. Just being outdoors and doing photography is enough for me. Feel better.

What a perfect face, and this accent is a charm.

Well said Courtney. As photographers we are all striving for that portfolio shot, the perfect shot. As you said most of the time we fail at producing that. In fact putting all that pressure on ourselves actually pushes us to probably produce sub par work. The less pressure we put on ourslves and just let it flow I think the better chance we give ourselves to create something we'll end up being happy with.

Agreed fully. As a hobbyist; I want to enjoy shooting my favorite subjects frequently whatever it might be. Feeling the obligation to be good at it like a pro is a huge barrier for enjoying this lovely hobby. Furthermore, if I can capture hundreds and hundreds of shots, one or two is sure to come out nice. That's good enough for me for showing to friends and family members. I don't need to present myself as a heavyweight to customers because, I don't have any customers. This is neither my job nor my business of livelihood. I have other profession to make a living.

This video came up in my suggestions and it's exactly the message I needed. I did a climbing trip a couple weeks ago and sure enough I managed to forget to put the damn battery in my Fuji. It was a beautiful camp and climb with dramatic skies and I was so choked knowing I was stuck with my phone for pictures. Barely gave the pics a second look, but I just took my perfectionist goggles off for a minute and looked back on the shots. Sure enough there's some ones in there I'm pretty happy with, and more than enough to feel like I'm there again despite being on a potato phone. Keep up the good work and look forward to more!

Just loved the stick breaking episode. You are completely on my wavelength ‘perfection’ is just chasing a dream. Enjoy the whole process I say, being outdoors, taking record shots for future visits, and yes occasionally that super shot that exceeds our expectations! Too often we measure our photography against the portfolio shots taken by professionals that have been expertly edited. We need to just enjoy ‘our’ photography.

Sometimes it's best to stop trying and just live life. People always seem to never be sure who they are , yet certain of who they are not !!!. My point is simple we are living in a state of flux ,change is inevitable. Someone told me that our character is best defined by" who we are when no one is looking." Definitely the way to understand yourself is to be yourself. To become a butterfly I found I had to stop being a grub. Life is for the living. I love art in all its forms. I was told art art school that photography was not an art form. Now they teach it at university as one of the Arts. To be honest the best thing I could say , is just think about what you are doing (a little meditation after on what happened in your day) . This works for me , to try to see myself as others see me only makes me wonder what was going on in their head. So don't confuse your life with someone else's. Most book writing requires editing . So live your own fairy tale because no one else can . They just like to think they can 😊

Hi Courtney! Useful perspectives you share with us! Everybody can identify themselves in your situation you are showing.
That’s great because I recognize similar situations quite often.
The real challange I think is playing around with us here is to find answers to the big questions -
    1) what do you want to photography and what are willing to tell us?
    2) what kind of storyteller are you and what’s your caracter in terms of A photographer?
Both aspects of the objective and subjective so to speak.
Thanks for a helpful video! And Good luck with your work!

Ever since i started following you, I've noticed that you are too harsh on yourself, photography should be fun, even when failing just enjoy the moments and learn.
I've recently tried to go on a "kingfishers hunt" and everything went wrong! I left work that day late, the bus to the place I wanted was late, and by the time I arrived there was less light. I did find few kingfishers, but not the one I wanted, the common kingfisher!
While I was strolling around and decided to put the camera in my backpack since no light left, when I just was about to do that I saw a kingfisher sitting in front of me right there! Took a photo, dim one...
When I edited it later, I realized it was pretty ok photo and it indeed was the common kingfisher!

we should always strive to do better, but perfection is (at this point in time) not obtainable, it'll just wear you out trying to get it, i think it's a good idea to stop trying to get perfection out of something, photography is such an awesome thing, because it literally doesnt need to be perfect to be amazing, the most iconic photographs of all time are usually not perfect. your photos can look great without being perfect imo, sometimes i actually try and make mine look less than perfect if what i'm trying to show with the photo isnt supposed to be perfect. great video, i enjoyed it a lot :)

Thank you for your honesty about perfection with your photography. To many photographers seek absolute perfection with every photo that they shoot. My philosophy is not to seek perfection rather the enjoyment of creating, learning to create my creative work. Most of all learn from your mistakes and experiment with your creative side of your photography.

    Hello Courtney!
I totally get it, the internal struggle between the perfectionist and the harsh reality of practical conditions.
And I can also see the perfectionist in your wonderful videos as well as your photography.
I love that you love trees. Maybe you're not a bonsai fan, which I know it's not for everyone, but you can see the same perfectionist traits in a landscape photographer as a bonsai artist. (And btw photography was my first love before I got attracted to the art of beautiful trees in small pots).
You have quickly become my favourite photography channel! Looking forward to your next videos 😊

"The joy of photography for me comes from the process of creating and the exploration of location ".... spoken like a true artist. I have been photographing for decades and your words have reminded me of what this is really all about again., and as a bonus your wit and jigging abilities make me laugh , thank you .

Very cogent sentiments eloquently expressed; I never understand why so many photographers place such a burden on themselves and only diminish the experience 🙂👍

I presume it’s because many fear the critics as they photograph for an audience and not for pleasure.

@@distomos8118 That's a fair appraisal. My photography started in 1979; in those days there were very limited opportunities to share work. So it remained a personal exploration. Depsite sharing widely these days, I'm fortunate to be able to retain a persepctive on how and why I make images. Implicit pressure to share and gain recognition in the digital age must cause so much frustration to creative people finding their way and developing under the glare of public spotlight. 😊👍

@@DGriffGallery I guess you’re taking this personal, but I wasn’t referring to you, in case you got the impression, it was meant to be a general statement.

Well, I wasn't expecting that! I hardly ever subscribe to channels. What a beautifully made video. Love the photos. You're really funny, engaging and therefore I had to subscribe just so I can watch more. I applaud you.

So refreshing to see your take on photography Courtney . The ups the downs , the wins the losses. I thing its all part of the game. its not a science and what is appealing to one is not to another . We are all different but that's what makes it interesting . PS Your funny too !! :-)

One favourite of my photos is a blurry one of a squirrel eating a crust as it watched people walk by - a memento of a holiday.
