I can’t understand why so many people deride this film. I’m sure the mini series is more complex and layered but the purpose of a film is to summarize a book in two hours and I thought it did a great job hitting the highlights of this cultish government, staging some very realistic sequences and making me sympathize with Kate. Natasha Richardson gives a quiet but powerful performance with subtle facial expressions that convey all her pent up angst and her scenes with Robert Duvall crackle with chemistry. Robert delivers his performance with such swag and charisma and juicy line deliveries that I found myself liking his character the best even though the story obviously didn’t want me to. Loved the scene where he talks to her about the importance of having a common purpose. I don’t think portraying villains as complex or not super evil is always a bad thing but it has to be well done and they did a very good job with him.

This was the first time that I saw Natasha Richardson and I fell in love with her! I wanted to bust through the screen and take her away from the horrible town of Gilead!
I still miss her so much. God bless you, Tash! 🤗

When Fred and Serena go to trial, wouldn’t it be such an awesome twist to bring Liz McGovern (the original Moira) into to the TV Series as a lawyer for June and the Martha’s who escaped Gilead?

It felt like when it came out the studio didn't know how to market it and so not many people saw it. It sort of missed the dvd rental era as well, but I found a copy and bought it, as well as digital streaming on TH-cam. It's so well done, well cast and while much different than the series, did a great job of creating Gilead. Natasha was so good at what she did. She is truly missed.

I loved Elizabeth McGovern as moria! This movie is great. What I like is that they barely deviated at all from the source material-Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale. The only thing they changed was the end a little.

I did not know that The HandMaid's Tale was a movie after the novel was written by Margaret Atwood in the early 1990s. I wasn't born in the year 1990.

The novel was written in 1985; movie came out in 1990. Actually filmed in the spring of 1989 mostly in Durham and Raleigh NC
