- Built in 1907, the ornate 0-6-0 "Tigerli" Nr. 8485 was comprehensively overhauled between 2006 and 2016 and is certified for main line deployment on the Swiss national network.
This short film shows the loco in action in mid September 2020 for one of its few annual outings, on a run from it's base at the historic roundhouse in Delémont to Laufen, in northwestern Switzerland.
The "Little Tigers" are the most common type of steam-powered SBB shunting locomotive dating from the early 20th Century. They were built by SLM in Winterthur and lasted well into the 1960s on active duty. Many were also deployed at factories for industrial odd jobs. Quite a few Tigerlis have been preserved in Switzerland (some also in France and the Netherlands), with various heritage railways. Nr. 8485 has been tastefully restored to its near original condition from 1907.

Das Tigerli Nr. 8485 wurde durch die Historische Eisenbahn Gesellschaft (HEG) zwischen 2006 und 2016 liebevoll restauriert und wieder betriebsbereit aufgearbeitet. Die Lok hat im Rundschuppen von Delsberg, der eleganten Rotonde Delémont ihr Domizil. Durch die sorgfälltige Aufarbeitung konnte nahezu der Originalzustand wieder hergestellt werden. Von etwa 1925 bis 1935 war die Rangierlokomotive der SBB Kreisdirektion II in Basel zugeteilt, deshalb trägt sie auch die Ziffer 2 am Führerhaus. Durch einen Einsatz bei der Wutachtalbahn in Südbaden als Nostalgielok für Fotozüge und Sonderfahrten kam dieses Tigerli auch zu einer internationalen Karriere von 1977 bis 1980. Später war sie im Depot Koblenz remisiert. Seit 2002 ist der klassische C-Kuppler nun in der Obhut der HEG.
Dieser Kurzfilm zeigt das Tigerli im Einsatz am 19. September 2020, dem auserwählten Dampftag für die Lok, welcher gemeinsam von der HEG und SBB Historic organisiert wurde.

Thnx. The locomotive was carefully restored by volunteers into its original condition from 1907. The overhaul required 10 years, so quite typical for this type of steam loco work. These shunting locomotives are known as "Little Tigers" because the brass pipes on the boiler combined with the black base color gave them similar colors to a wild animal and they were always on the "prowl" at rail yards, doing their switching work.
It's a common type of preserved steam locomotive in Switzerland, some Tigerlis even were exported to museum railways abroad and remain in active use in France and Holland. 8485 is certainly one of the most authentic, other Tigers can be more colorful with red wheels or green cabs.
Oh yes, the turntable at the roundhouse is electric with button operation! :)
