Today on Hate It Or Love It, I've found 5 reasons why people online seem to HATE the Las Vegas based alternative band Imagine Dragons. I of course weigh in with my opinions, but be sure to let me know what you think in the comments down below! Drop a like while you're at it!

For some reason, I've noticed that their better songs are usually the ones that aren't hits.

They know hot to make a hit. When they want to and when they try to make a hit they just try appealing to the youth. So it lacks meaning...

The reason imagine dragons gets hate is because their labelled as rock/alternative when they themselves define themselves as genre-less and the hard core rock community listen to them and obviously are disappointed. The fact is they are easily the biggest band in the world right now in terms of song sales, streams, social influence etc and therfore that just naturally attracts hate regardless of what they do.

I would say that quality doesn't affect their music that much before Evolve. Evolve tried to be more of a pop album in order to attract more popularity and thus it started degrading a bit.

Personally this is my favourite band, but I can agree that song does get repetitive and annoying, but I’ll still get hyped listening to it
I fcking hate song purely because of the chorus, and the fact that it got popular pretty much ruined their name making them a really generic band

I personally think some of their less popular songs are hidden gems. Hopeless opus has grown on me alot, Fallen is awesome, Polaroid is one of my favorite songs ever, and even songs like love, or real life.

I agree as I am a huge imagine dragons fans and most of their biggest hits I barely listen too besides radioactive. Some of their most underrated songs I love are Warriors, Bleeding Out, Im so sorry, Roots, Who we are, Monster, Battle Cry, and Underdog.
I can agree to that. I personally find “Friction” to be underrated and one of the best songs they’ve ever made.
Im a huge Imagine Dragons fan, but im not gonna lie and sit here defending their every move. Their past two albums have been my least favorite and maybe they are pandering to the masses. But they also have a lot of positivity to offer. They make songs which give a voice to people struggling with mental health, (such as Shots and Zero) as well as songs that speak to them (such as It Comes Back To You). Personally, I feel their sound has declined a bit, it is very electronic. And the reasons you provided are pretty valid reasons to dislike them. Everyone has different tastes. But I don't think it's enough to warrant so much hatred. For a band that sends out good messages and positivity, they've been getting much more hatred than they deserve. People are missing the point of their songs. And that's the frustrating part. Most wont give them a chance.
I agree with every word you said, I get it why people might dislike them, but not till they reach the point of hatred.most of their songs have powerful meanings and that's the reason why I love them. so seeing that people hate imagine dragons is like people loving mumble rap, which I think is the worst kind of rap and music of all kind.
And also, why does no one care about all the story behind demons? It's something that could make them understand Dan Reynolds' personality (that is something that I appreciate even more than their music)

I hate to say this, but i'm an Imagine Dragons fan, and i agree with pretty much everything you said, although i thought your last point is definitely truer about Evolve than their previous two records. As people though, i don't think there's anything wrong with them. They're just 4 nice guys.

I saw them perform Thunder on the Ellen show, and it was so much better than the studio recording. The pitch shifted vocals were quietened down, and there were actual guitars in the chorus which made it somewhat interesting to listen to. There's also two guitar solos in it. It's strange that they'd perform it like that live because if that was the studio version it would not be as popular. Maybe the live version was the one they wanted to put out but ultimately put out the more annoying radio friendly one because they knew it would become a hit.
I've grown indifferent on Thunder, but Believer is just plain annoying. I do like Whatever It Takes and Next To Me

I thought that "Friction" made the Mission Impossible really cool in my opinion
I had no idea there was a movie with the song Friction in it, it's definately my favourite Imagine Dragons songs. At least that one sounded unique :P
To be honest I literally thought I would hate this video, but I actually like how this guy handles and (dare I say) expands on the subjects mentioned very well and I surprisingly liked it, pretty valid criticisms and great backup reasoning
It sucks though that this has so many dislikes, and some blind hate in the comments, but it's understandable since there's fans that want to protect what they like, and I do too but we've also got to make amends to the flaws and reality of what the big picture is
(Still I love the band and enjoy about 90% of their music including Natural but that's just a part if my taste in music)

To sum it up: people hate imagine dragons because of their popularity. He mentions several times about how the band is over-commercialized and too mainstream, in almost every point he makes. To me, it seems that the people that just don't like their style automatically hate them because they always hear them on the radio, commercials, etc. Think about it, if you didn't like a certain rapper but heard them everywhere you went, you would eventually grow to hate them. In my opinion, it makes sense, but it's not a valid reason to hate them. Also, my friends always make fun of me for liking them, saying their lyrics make no sense, even though the majority of their songs tackle many tough subjects, such as depression. The songs definitely make sense, but they're not filled with insanely deep lyrics that require Matpat to decipher. Therefore, I think we should all be able to like whatever bands we want and stop being so damn judgemental.

for one, yes, hating something for being too popular is very common and understandable. I’m an Undertale fan, so that says a lot lmao.
Same with frozen’s “let it go” and journey’s “don’t stop believing” which started to drive people crazy

And ironically, believer is not even one of my favorite songs lol.
That is just not at all the case. To me, it is just generic and extremely boring. Unfortunately that is what seems to go on the charts and on the radio because they try to cater to as many people as possible, and as a result the dont manage to be interesting at all. Occasionally there is great music on the charts and on the radio, imagine dragons simply isnt one of those cases

The Cheap Microphone all their mainstream songs sound mainstream lol. What I’m saying is if you actually listen to their full discography, you’ll get a lot better of a feel and appreciation for the band than if you just listen to Thunder and Radioactive
I agree with you for the most part. But again, music is subjective and it all comes down to personal opinion. Some of the songs you may like might not be for someone else and vice versa.
In my opinion, I really liked Tiptoe, Amsterdam, etc. I'm also digging Next To Me right now.

Sam Herbert I've listened to every song and have been a long time fan. That being said, evolve completely disappointed me and threw away most originality and skill shown in the first two albums
I like Imagine Dragons, but I don't even consider them rock. They're a pop band. Nothing wrong with that. Pop music can be fantastic. I hate how some bands however are being classified as Rock - like Twenty One Pilots - yet are pop. And no, just because they had mainstream appeal, that doesn't make them pop. It's other factors. Otherwise, fuck, even Metallica would be pop since they've had several Top 40 singles

Rochelle Dennis well first off a band where you can't even tell instruments are being played and a front man who completely dominates the project. Maroon 5 has become the Adam Levine Experience. I don't think Evolve was the best Imagine Dragons album but at least there is still a sense of them being an actual band. They just have to find their way back to their roots. As for M5 I think they are lost forever

"They sell their music to every movie or game soundtrack". Nobody can argue about their humanitarian work in helping children suffering from cancer (Tyler Robinson Foundation). This band got a thing to put their money on, not like others they put money on girls and shit. So what i'm trying to say is they're putting their songs everywhere for a good purpose which is considered as an honoring to god

The problem for me is because doing that frequently became a little annoying. I love their purpose, but why they don't look for an another option to help people with cáncer? I mean, they could sell the letter and sound of a song without to sing it. I love the band since I heard it for the first time, and I recognize that the last 2 albums are not goog enough as night visión or even before. So, In order to reduce a bit the hate because "they appere everywhere" I would like they stop selling their songs as the way they use to do. I want people give them the oportunity to listen "ID" not because they appere in a movie, but their talent or labor.

#4 is a big one for me. I like Imagine Dragons but it's annoying hearing their songs in every commercial! I don't mind the original songs for movies that much though because I do love some of them 😂(Who We Are and Warriors are my favorites!)
I like Panic!, so this point made me build a sort of contrast in my head.
Panic! has a song in the movie Jennifer's Body (a gory horror flick, the kind they've always been fans of), another song was written for Arkham City (they've talked about Batman before), and Urie wrote a song specially for the Spongebob musical (again, he's always mentioned being a fan of musicals...and liking Spongebob would be up his alley). Commercialization can be done, as long as you hold onto your personality. I do like a lot of Imagine Dragons songs, but some recent ones don't strike me as having much personality.

I'm more of an LP, TOP, FOB and Panic fan. But Imagine Dragons is one of those rare bands that I don't have a single song from them that I hate. All their albums are pretty solid so far. I find myself playing through their entire playlist on Spotify while doing my work and I enjoy every single song and pretty much know all the words.

I‘m not listening to their music a lot but they are the best mainstream live band out there. I‘ve seen them 3 times now, in arenas and at a small private gig and each time was fucking incredible.
I also think that Dan Reynolds has a very strong voice (Newest example: I don’t know why!) and the others know how to play their instruments, too. They seem like very nice lads who care lots about mental health, cancer patients, equal rights etc. etc. Yes, they are mainstream and you’re right with your points but they have a good core

To be fair, I liked the way Friction was used in the Mission Impossible trailer. It was different enough from their other songs and it kind of fit the international spy feel of the trailer.

This was insightful, I very much enjoy imagine dragons and noticed it got alot of hate, being too shy to ask why I just went along with the bandwagon to try to pick up info. That didn't work because no one would actually say why they hated the band so much.
Personally i dont really have anything against them but bear with me for a second.
They are very popular, but in the big picture they make very mediocre music for the level of fame they are on. And their songs are quite repettetive and are made for the biggest crowd possible, basically they are trying to make easily selling pop music.

Why do I get the idea that a lot of people do not have listened to all of their songs and only the big ones. Because of course they sound the same because the whole top 50 sounds the same. You have a special receipt to get a hit. And yes then every song that becomes a hit sounds more alike. But listen to their whole albums and you'll find endless variations

My opinion: when asked I say I LOVE imagine dragons. Their better songs are some of my favorites. However, I agree with you on a lot of these points (and yes, I thought “thunder” was terrible from go). But I love a lot of songs on their first and second albums, and a select number from the third. I respect these points, but still love a lot of their music
Everyone has their own taste in music and tbh those aren't real reasons to hate/dislike an artist. I can't stand Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber or other artists songs... but I can't tell that they are bad cause many people actually like them.
and in MY OPINION are Imagine Dragons some cool and nice guys who just love to do music, they are talented and also worked hard to stay here, where they are now and they really thankful for that aswell, they have also done good things for example the Tyler Robinson Foundation and other things.
They are also really kind with their fans and are mostly great live (I already went to their concert and I loved it). I dislike a few songs for example Next to me, Dancing in the Dark, Smoke & Mirrors etc. but they are still great.. and it's not only the sound I like from their other songs, it's the lyrics, their lyrics are really meaningful and thats one of many reasons why I love them!

Well your point kinda makes it seem like there are no "bad" bands, just different tastes, and while I can agree that taste and opinion can be different, there's also an objective side of music that can't be ignored, and I definitely think the "bad" has to exist so "good" can also exist.
I'm not familiar with their early stuff mentioned in the video, just with Night Visions onwards, and I actually used to think they were innovating the sound of music industry back then with stuff like Radioactive, but from then till now they've repeated the same formula over and over and they're not innovating at all.
The mix in the latest album is just bad, everything sounds loud and yes overdramatic, something to be used as an anthem everywhere you look and that's just obnoxious.
Musically they also don't do much, I mean they're 4 guys and all I can hear most of the times is a voice and a synth with a heavy beat, to me this is no band, rather more like an interpreter backed up by an EDM producer, there's no individual personality put into the music. Not to mention the over simplistic song formula that is always the same.
I don't have anything against people who like them, in fact they represent the majority of the mainstream pop music audience and how the formula gets them, if you don't care about music more deeply that's ok, not everyone has to. But I do think the narrative of different tastes just doesn't cut it sometimes, there's a difference between taste and actual quality.
For example I recognize quality in Jazz all the way, but I still can't put myself to listening to it because it doesn't "butter my muffin".
In the same way I can acknowledge that some band I listen to isn't very good but I still like the sound, in this case I don't like Imagine Dragons very much and I don't think they're very good but I understand why some people like them.

I love Imagine Dragons for many reasons but I respect others people opinion and their music taste.
They're just not a rock band Strumming your guitar every five is not rock.
I used to like them when "Demons" came out, and I thought they had potential. And then they just wasted it by going the route of alternative pop.
Quentin Childs listen to smoke and mirrors, they have very alternative songs there. Don't go for the big ones but more hopeless opus and summer

The Beetles went through a lot of changes similar to Imagine Dragons. No one seems to ever criticize their music.
Because each member of the Beatles are talented writers and skilled musicians with unique prowess with their instruments. Also: they’re the Beatles for Christ sakes.

I don't mind dramatization in music as long as it is done well.
Loved the beginning for #3, that one made me laugh out loud.
Ah, yeah, having one's music used in commercials... Honestly, I am not against that. Probably because it worked in favor of some of the local musicians I know. But that doesn't mean that I will give you a pass if you keeep on doing it at every given opportunity.
Oh, and I heard Believer in a Vodafone commercial in my country last year.
Honestly? I don't hate Imagine Dragons. But if I were to pick a band from the 2010s so-called 'indie boom' that has anthemic choruses and a lead singer named Dan, I would choose Bastille.

a great example of songs being used in commercials would be Apple with its old iPod commercials. they took, really great alternative and catchy songs that they knew people would love and listen to. but imagine dragons is being too extra with it

The only thing that doesn’t make sense to me is when I hear people say, they hate imagine dragons cause “they aren’t real rock”. Yeah…. they are alternative…

Imagine Dragons is the band that made me fall in love with music and they’ll always have a special place in my heart. However they’re not in my top 10 bands anymore and their music doesn’t impact me as much as it used to. Smoke + Mirrors and Night Visions really helped me through a lot of depression during high school so I really hold those records close. I just love their music because every album has a different meaning and tone. Evolve is more inspirational music than Night Visions. I dont care about what the band believes in or whatever I just care about the music. Every time I listen to their songs I know what their saying and I love their songs so much. I just wish they would make songs like Speak To Me EP but I'm fine with his they are now.
i'm 15, and from brazil. I listen to Imagine dragons since 2014, when i was 9. Last year i met The Score, and i loved their songs too, but in last weeks i became a imagine dragons listener again. I think The Score's musics lyrics have always the same feel, the same messages. It's not a bad think, but it made me like Imagine Dragons even more, cause they have so much different types of musics, i can listen they even i am sad, angry or happy.

Yeah I was a little curious about that too, because I actually really enjoy some of their material especially the earlier stuff. But the fact that it takes them like 5 years to drop an album, and just the fact that their career right now seems to lack a lot of direction is probably part of it.
+Koenigsegg Fanboy I think the meme has helped get them a lot of new fans but this band was massive when I was a kid and they managed to get a lot of Top 10s here in the Australian mainstream charts. Then again, back in the 2000s we had a really big Rock following with numerous home grown and other Rock bands getting spots in the top 10s and top 5s.

I actually like the latest album, but its ironic that its called "Evolve" it isn't really an evolution, not for their music anyway. The previous two albums are miles better.
I haven't watched the video yet but in my opinion, it seems like they have a checklist of boxes they tick just to appeal to as many people as possible. It preys on people who aren't actually into music, scratching the itch of many different demographics and taking advantage of those who jump on the bandwagon of what's popular.
Eventually it will die and be forgotten just like the rest of them.
I personally find their music to be completely obnoxious and the lack of any real musical talent is insulting to bands who actually pour their sweat and blood into the music they painstakingly craft. Instead, what's popular is this 'paint by numbers' beat with edgy lyrics which is just depressing.
Imagine Dragons is my favorite band, and I will always love their first two albums, as well as some of the singles they made outside of their albums, like Lost Cause, Battle Cry, Monster, and Warriors.
1) They've changed completely. But that's because the only member that stayed was Dan. Others left and then Dan picked up Wayne, Ben and the Tolmans, and those 2 were then replaced by Platz.
2) My Fault, All For You, Darkness, Emma, I Was Me, Not Today, 30 Lives, The River, America, Polaroid, It Comes Back To You, Summer, The Fall, Second Chances, Release...
3) Evolve is definitely the most pop album by them, that's true. There's also this little thing called Smoke + Mirrors, which maybe you haven't heard of, but it's literally the opposite. Like, "some of S+M". Yeah, maybe the singles, but if you look at me addressing your 2nd point, a lot of the songs is from S+M. Making the songs that are most likely to be hits singles is just common sense. Do you really think stuff like Yesterday would be a hit? Doubt it. But it's actually my favourite from Evolve...
4) Okay, you got me, I agree. But that doesn't mean the songs are bad, Battle Cry is still one of my favourites. And most people I know don't like neither that or Ready Aim Fire but I actually like that as well.
5) Okay, I guess I don't analyze music enough to notice. So this could be true and maybe I'm just blinded or maybe I genuinely don't notice.

also, what is inherently wrong with following trends? if they heard music that they liked and wanted to make, people shouldn’t try to hit them for that. just like trendy clothes, self expression isn’t AVOIDING trends, it’s accepting them and taking part in them when you want, but also knowing when you don’t like one. i know as an artist, i have been struggling with my art style for years. i haven’t had a consistent style for more than a month, and that’s okay. if i see an animation that inspires me, i draw in that style. when i see a badass realistic portrait, i draw realism. them making each new song “pander” to a different genre, is really them letting go of having to fit in a box and embracing that music, as well as genre, is entirely fluid.
What’s odd to me is that they’re considered a rock band when they’re not. They’re a fucking pop band ffs it’s so weird that they’re labeled as a rock band.

I'm a big fan of them, they are my favourite band. Although they are I am not a blind fan. There are songs I do not like from them like Dancing In The Dark. Sometimes maybe they can be a bit over the top. I don't really see how the abandoned their roots, I mean they just can't stay in Vegas all the time, they do have to tour. Thunder is VERY overrated. I don't hate it but it is highly overrated for what it really is. Their latest soundtrack songs have been pretty bad. Levitate just sounds like a bad pop song from the 80s to me. Sucker For Pain while it's not entirely their song I do like their part, but I don't really like the rapping. Don't get me wrong it's better than all of this Lil Pump, XXXTENTACIONXXX (or however you spell his name) stuff coming out. I feel like what you said about there being so many hits and them being different styles is a good thing. They're able to make different styles of music and it panders to different audiences and people seem to like it. I don't really see them as rock either. Sure some songs like I'm So Sorry, Friction, and Believer sound more rock over all I'd say they are alternative. I'd say Night Visions and Smoke + Mirrors were more alternative rock, but now I'd say they're alternative cause they ain't rock or completely pop, but they're just in the middle. Also we don't really consider the Speak To Me EP stuff as the same band. Dan is the only member that is still in the band from then. I think Dan might have said himself that he reused the name for this band or something. Not entirely sure.

I've been a hardcore Firebreather for 2 years now, they make music with their hearts. Yes, they may sound like our average alternative bands, but yeah, whatever music they made came from a source of pain or happiness.They do what they want to.
You're right about them doing a lot of soundtracks though. They were really excited about being recognized at first, but now they are just doing too many.
I love a couple of their songs, but I definitely cant say that I love Imagine Dragons as a whole

When I first watched Sweet Home, which is a Korean, horror/survival show, the last thing I expected was imagine dragons playing during one of the best scenes in the show. 😂
Because of they're very popular, WTF kind of crap is that? It doesn't matter they're very popular but the problem about Imagine Dragons is their genre, Imagine Dragons should be Indie Rock instead of Pop Rock except Demons, Radioactive, America, It's Time and etc isn't pop songs. Most of Imagine Dragons songs is pop
night visions is a very solid album though. If you dive a bit deeper into the album and ignore the overplayed radio hits, you'ill find yourself jamming to some lesser known songs (hopefully)

I understand the "problem" with number 3, but that's 1 of the main reasons I love their music. That dynamism really suits me because I listen to and like every genre.

Hello...big Imagine Dragons here :D. Before I begin sharing my opinion on the points in the video, great video and I appreciate your opinions and information as always.
1. I don’t really think it’s worth hating them for this. I mean I think it would be great if they make a little bit of songs similar to their EP days. I actually really loved Speak to Me the EP, The Pit is easily one of their best songs. The most oldest fans who loved this sound I can see being greatly disappointed.
2. I think it’s part of their appeal. I actually like their over-the-too anthemic like style.
3. I can’t deny this at all, but honestly, Smoke + Mirrors is not pandering at all to the modern style. It’s very indie in a way. Evolve, however, does pander to modern trends. I do like the album, including Thunder, but it’s clearly mainstream. I haven’t heard Walking the Wire or Dancing in the Dark lol.
4. Very understandable, it’s kinda hard to deny that some of their music is just for a paycheck. I’ve enjoyed a handful of their soundtrack songs though, such as levitate and the ones off S+M. Their music is just very kid friendly for commercials I guess.
5. I don’t have the best ear, so I can’t answer this. I don’t think really care for chord progressions I guess, but I can say they have some interesting production choices and lyrics in times. It isn’t the most ear catching music I suppose, but I wouldn’t just slap the generic label on them. Smoke + Mirrors is pretty unique in its sound, I mean look at Hopeless Opus and Gold, but Evolve is kinda formulaic.

The lead singer/writer has been been dealing with depression throughout his career but at the time of writing evolve he kinda felt like he’d overcome it to a large degree and is one of the reasons it has a different tone
Night Visions was a decent album, I liked "Radioactive" on it a lot. That said, I haven't really been able to get into their newer albums. I just find a lot of their newer songs mediocre and forgettable. I absolutely hate Thunder, that is literally one of the most irritating songs I've ever heard. I found it hilarious that it was featured in the trailer for Teen Titans Go to the movies because I hated that show two before that song was even out so it's two things i despise together. Speaking of commercials though, I don't see whats wrong with licensing out their songs to commercials movies and video games or making original songs for movies, commercials and video games, people who are actually fans of them probably love hearing them everywhere. If they were putting songs from bands I like in everything, I would be happy. Also most Imagine Dragons songs don't annoy me, they are just boring so it doesn't make me irritated hearing them. The Jeep commercial with "Thunder" annoyed me but I hate the song anyway.
It was probably good that they mostly abandoned traditional show tunes, they almost certainly wouldn't be as successful if they had stuck with that style of music, that's actually kind of a niche style and many people have to be in a certain mood to like that kind of music, most people probably wouldn't listen to that style of music while driving or exercising or something like that.
This is so old now but the issue people have with ID licensing out their music is that it feels like a constant cash grab and it subsequently makes them seem disingenuous and only interested in making big money. And, there is nothing wrong with making money from your art! However, the more successful the band has become, the more soulless, generic and “lowest common denominator” their music has become. It’s meant to appeal to the widest audience possible which, again, feels disingenuous, as if they’re just trying to appeal to as many people possible without having to do anything too experimental or unique. While they do encompass a variety of genres, nothing they put out it is new, influential, risky, clever, or very interesting; it’s all just a pastiche of genres that have been done a million times, and done much better, to boot.
There’s nothing bad or wrong about being a popular, well-known band. However, when you sacrifice the quality of your art for more money and corporate sponsors, people will eventually start to see through it. And, when you’re hearing Imagine Dragons everywhere you turn, from car commercials to movies, it quickly becomes obnoxious.

Honestly I kind of like the special songs they make for a movie or video game, they sound like what the movie/game should. Additionally, I really enjoy how often there music seems to change, especially from album to album. That way you get a little something new each time and it doesn't feel like you're listening to the same music over and over. For example, I enjoyed Night Visions alot, but Smoke and Mirrors is my favorite album because it sounds more like the music I would enjoy.

Imagine Dragons are extremely talented plus they sound incredible live! I agree that they produced too much of mainstream music now but I think that's also great somehow because they're reaching more people. And these guys are just trying to spread positive message out there! I've read things online and it's just sad that some people just love to hate. They think hating other bands is cool which is not. I totally understand your points but I am still a huge fan of ID and I'm gonna continue to support them! x
