I went with Z1 900 , welded the crank and put an OEM 1000 cc top end , worked the transmission with under cut gears , added a winding tray and engine transmission waste gate , top end with heavy duty valve springs & titanium retainers topped of with a stage one cam , the stock carb was replaced with the ZI R accelerator pump and the Z 1 air box with K & N filter. The pipe was a four into one designed specifically fro drag racing , I can’t for the life of me remember the brand but it was the hot ticket ! Extremely reliable and it could be hammered without any issues ! Great memories !

It's a Vance&Hines theme bike that has a 1197cc engine, with a Mk2 cylinder that has over size valves, street strip port, and special ground cams. 34mm flat slides. Bottom end is bullet proof with Ron Gardner doing his magic on. Sports a 5 1/2" rear wheel and 180 Avon cobra tire. 4-6" over extended swing arm, period correct. Suspension is nothing special, just a good set of rear shocks, preload and dampning. Front has set of beefy springs to prevent bottoming out. Stock front brake, good pads, stainless brake line. I had a need for speed in my younger days, and bought a 78 Z1-R brand new in 1978. Not into 1/4 mile drags, I preferred curvy roads and WFO straights for miles. Saw 150 between Amidon and Belfield, ND. Put over 100,000 miles on that motor with nothing more than regular tune-ups and oil changes.

The big valve polyspherical Unitrak GPz Cylinder "bathtub" head is a slight advantage over the J hemi head. Both are big improvements over the original Z/KZ pre 81 head. But if you are serious about racing an eight valve KZ variant - 1500+ cc and the Vortex II.

@@cycledrag As much as I loved my older bikes you just can't beat the newer technology. Give me the newest with a blower and I'd be a happy camper. I'm from a little place called Silicon Valley you may have heard of it. lol. We have a freeway here we call Hywy 17. It takes you from San Jose south over the Loma Prieta mountains to Santa Cruz. With 301 days of sunshine every year bikes are a must. If you saw me I'd be in my cycle gear, sneakers, cutoff jeans, and sunglasses doing 100 plus with a cell phone bungee to my gas tank and talking on it at the same time. This was when they still had the cord attached. Up until the early '90s when they passed the fu*king helmet law. Let those who ride decide. The speed I ride at on a daily basis I wouldn't want my head to survive if I went down just to be stuck on a machine in the hospital. I quit riding when that law was passed and just this year bought a bike again. Triumph 955 triple. I'd love to have another Ninja. I'm looking now that I started riding again. Stupid helmets. lol

I had 3 Kawasaki KZ1000's .a 1978, 1980 built strictly for the track ( ran mid 9's aprox. 145 to 150 mph ) that was fast for 1980. I also had 1982 LTD1000. LOVED THEM ALL.
Thanks for watching. What do you ride?

I had a1978 Suzuki GS1000 with 100cc Wiseco overbore pistons and I ported the head myself. I put over 50,000 miles on it, boy I miss that bike!
The Kawasaki Z-1 and KZ 900, 1000's are a big piece of history, I've owned every year except a 1973 Z-1, but that's next!!! Hopefully I find a barnfind and all there, I will restore it back to original!!! Right now, I have a '76 LTD 900, ol' street racer, wouldn't take much to get it back all stock again!!! Kawasaki let the good times roll!!!👍👍

@@cycledrag I'll take any one of them from 1973-75 Z-1, 1976 KZ900, and KZ1000, as far as motor set up, 1197cc, undercut transmission, 4 inch over swing arm, pretty much almost stock appearance!!! It has to be really a street/strip combination, that's how my '76 LTD 900 is today, that whole configuration!!! Kawasa let the good times roll!!!
ALL MY DAD'S RACING DAYS WAS THE KAW'S...900's.
I had a 1976 KZ 900 and traded it in for a 1980 KZ LDT1000 and loved those two bikes.
Great show! Like grudge, two strokes, especially triples. Am subbing rite now

I got 3 KZ 650s making one good one .I went through 4 of then in my 20s im 56 now and just cant wait till im finished it
What is the quickest a normally aspirated kz has run
My first street bike was a 77 kz650 ran great surprised a few newer sport bikes then I got a deal on a kz900 that sat for years so I took and rebuilt the 900 motor and squeezed it on the 650 frame and that bike was nasty

I was a proud of the Z1R LTD 1000 AND KZ 1000 & KZ1900
Mine was not a KZ but a 900 prior to the air pollution crap. 83 HP and I rode as an off duty Sheriff deputy in the mid 70s. Nothing ever kept up with me - EVER on the street.
love the KZ but owned a 79 gs1000L

My uncle had a kz900. He gave me a ride,I was hypnotized. My uncle Kenny said I squeezed him so hard . I was like velcro, gripping like my life was depending on it.
That was 1977 I was 9 years old.
I owned a 75 kz900. Love that bike. And took down many sport bikes in the 1/8

@@cycledrag The guy that sold me the bike said that it was. But I spoke to a collector. That it was just a kz 900. Due to the manufacturer date of assembly. Didn't really matter to me to be honest. I love the bike either way. It was mildly built, and set up for the 1/8 mi. Was a ton of fun to ride.
We have a healthy z1r at home love it!
the KZ's woulda done better if their riders weren't all 100+ lbs more than their adversaries. lol

Back in 1987 in San Bernardino Ca I had a Kawasaki KZ 650, I used to race down E street at midnight during the summer, never lost one race. Cops everywhere

1000 ft or 1/8 track ? ( sorry I'm still livin in the 90s 😂)
i had 1000 kz hoda CBX suzuki 1100 love them.
I had a 900 bored over pro street KZ. Raked, extended swing arm, Hindle sidewinder, lectron carbs.
I’ve had four or five of these bikes and I sure wish I would’ve kept everyone I didn’t know they would be so rare back in the 80s you could buy them for 800 bucks
How many of these KZ's are really GPZ's?
not very many they mostly use z1 and kz cases and cranks with gpz heads and sometime transmissions

Stupid helmets. lol
